arrowtown choppers After a winter indoors planning and helping develop the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy, the Arrowtown Choppers will be hitting the hills again soon. From 28 September the group will be restarting their weekly chops, every Thursday at 6 pm. The focus will be on cutting down wilding seedlings in defined zones close to the Big Hill Track. To join the action, just head up Bush Creek then Big Hill Track. A couple of hundred metres before the Sawpit Gully turnoff you can sign in and start work! There will be some tools available up there, but if you have your own loppers or saw it would help if you brought them. For more information join the Arrowtown Choppers Facebook group.
boomerang bags at four square Arrowtown’s Four Square supermarket has recently become the first shop in the Wakatipu to become a depot for the sustainable communities project Boomerang Bags. Now when you shop there, rather going home with a plastic bag that will end up in the landfill, you can borrow a handmade Boomerang Bag. You drop the bag off again next time you are passing. Organiser Georgia Todd hopes that soon there will be more depots. ‘We have plenty of demand for these fantastic bags as more and more businesses want to become sustainable and cut back on their plastic use,’ she says. ‘We just need more people to make bags so we can get them out to the community.’ Since the beginning of the year volunteers have made hundreds of reusable bags at weekly sewing bees around the district. Arrowtown has a bee on the second Friday of the month at 7 pm in the community rooms next to the tennis courts. If Fridays don’t work for you, a Saturday option at Nemo in Frankton has just been added. Materials are all donated, and while some volunteers bring sewing machines, pins and scissors, you don’t necessarily need to have equipment or even sewing skill. Quite possibly the winningest team in the Wakatipu, Arrowtown School’s Rippa Rugby players have done it again, winning the Otago championships a few weeks ago and making it to the national finals for the seventh year in a row. Coach Paul Winders and the kids are off to Wellington 17–19 September to take on the top schools from each province. Last year they won three of their five games… fingers crossed they do even better this year! Despite the wintry weather, the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust had a successful first planting day of the season on Saturday at Whitechapel. A hardy group of volunteers got an amazing 1000 native plants into the ground and mulched, ready for spring. The trust will be out again this Saturday 16 September, working on Project Gold on the west shore of Lake Hayes from 9 am to noon. Bring friends, family, energy, gloves, shovel, water and solid footwear you don’t mind getting muddy. The planting area is a 5–10 minute walk anti-clockwise from the bottom of Rutherford Road. get ready for the spring show With the Arrowtown Spring Show, a community event dating back nearly 100 years, set for Friday 29 September, it’s time to start coddling your flowers, finishing off your handcrafts and working on your baking. The organising committee have released the schedule, which includes sections for a number of classes of daffodils and other cut flowers, floral art, crafts from crochet to pottery, baking and photography. A children’s section provides for entries produced both at home and at school or preschool. There will be a fashion show and clothing sale in aid of CanShop at 2 pm. your flop-free recipe spaghetti and meatballs
3 Tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, finely diced 600 g pork mince 40 g fresh white breadcrumbs 8 anchovy fillets, chopped small handful fresh herbs, chopped grated zest of ½ lemon salt and black pepper to season 1 small onion, chopped 1 fat garlic clove, crushed 500 g passata 500 g spaghetti fresh herbs of choice, chopped Parmesan cheese, grated Heat the olive oil in a pan and gently fry the first onion until it becomes translucent. Remove from the heat, transfer half to a large bowl. Add the pork (or mince of choice) to the bowl and mix together, along with the breadcrumbs, anchovies, herbs, lemon zest and seasoning. With wet hands, roll small handfuls of the mixture into small meatballs and place on a large 10

Drain, reserving 1 Tbsp of the cooking water, then toss with the tomato sauce and the meatballs. Serve scattered with chopped herbs and Parmesan cheese.
