at war with wildings
bradley’s world champs Local rower Bradley Leydon has been at the World Junior Champs and has done Arrowtown proud by getting into the B final of the single sculls, ultimately finishing 12th in the world. Mum Jil reckons he put in a sterling effort after a tough campaign, and says she is proud of what he has achieved.
At a meeting attended by over 100 people, the Arrowtown Wilding Group (AWG) presented a battle plan to the Arrowtown community last week. Led by Ben Teele and Noel Beggs under the auspices of the Arrowtown Village Association, the AWG is an informal group dedicated to halting the spread of wilding trees. Ben says, ‘If nothing is done to the hillsides around the town, within a few years they will be a sea of green conifers.’ The draft strategy, drawn up in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders and advisory groups, proposes removing all wilding conifers on the autumn colour faces as the first priority, followed by the autumn colour trees (which are themselves invasive wilding species). The immediate felling of the Coronet Forest, a seed source, is also essential. The conifers would be removed using hand clearance, basal bark spray and aerial spray. Once the conifers had gone, the rest of the wilding trees would be cleared and replanted in sections over a number of years so that visual impact would be minimised. The trees would be replaced with a mixture of native species and non-spreading deciduous colour trees. With such an ambitious plan, the community will need to get on board. ‘This will require a lot of work over a large period of time,’ says Ben, ‘but it could produce an amazing recreational and visual landscape at Arrowtown's back door.’ The Arrowtown Choppers volunteer group (find them on Facebook) have already started on hand clearance in sensitive areas, and there will also be opportunities to get involved in replanting – and, of course, fundraising. rugby prizegiving Arrowtown Rugby Club rounded off a successful year with a prizegiving at the weekend. President and club coach Simon Spark says everyone enjoyed the evening: ‘We had a great night, a lot of fun.’ Player of the Year was Isireli Nayaloga, while Tom Grandiek was Players’ Player. Outstanding Contribution to the Team went to Angus Larsen and MVP was Adam Hill. Other trophy winners were Ben Carr, Adam Jackson and Tom McIntyre. Simon’s delighted the season went so well for the premiers, even if they fell at the final hurdle with defeat by local rivals Wakatipu. ‘We were very happy to make the final but disappointed we could not take out the competition. We had a great bunch of guys playing for the club this season and all are looking forward to next year.’ Good news for the team who have worked so well under Simon – he will be back coaching them again next year.

making the most of mahu whenua Two years ago 53,000 hectares of Arrowtown’s mountain backdrop was covenanted under the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust to become a private national park called Mahu Whenua. Now a working group has come together to work out how to make the most of this generous gift. Alongside the land owner, Arrowtown and Queenstown local community and environmental groups are working with the QEII Trust, DoC, ORC and QLDC to produce a feasibility study identifying the issues, benefits and options around creating a gateway to and a celebration of the Manu Whenua environment. According to Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association chair Scott Julian, this is an opportunity to be cherished by locals and visitors alike. ‘While many local residents enjoy walking and cycling the many trails on the property on the fringe of the town, they may not realise that New Zealand’s largest private national park is sitting on their doorstep. Equally, they also may not realise how much opportunity Mahu Whenua presents to learn more about and help restore a uniquely native ecology and a showcase of our high-country heritage.' The group, he explains, is working hard to provide well-considered options for the community to consider, discuss and refine. 9

1 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped FREE to place, just email a photo, dates 2 carrots, finely chopped with full name and a short message 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 1 fresh bay leaf 800 g lamb mince 2 Tbsp tomato paste 250 ml chicken stock Mash 125 ml red wine 800 ml Desiree potatoes, 60 ml Worcestershire sauce roughly chopped 120 ml frozen peas, defrosted 250 ml cream 1 cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 100 g butter, softened Preheat oven to 220°C. Heat oil in a pan and add onion, carrot, garlic and bay leaf. Cook until soft. Season to taste, add the mince and stir, breaking up mince with a spoon. Add tomato paste and stir to combine. Add stock, wine and Worcestershire sauce, bring to the boil, reduce heat to low and simmer until the sauce is thick (about 20 minutes). Stir though the peas and parsley, season to taste. To make the mash, place the potatoes in a saucepan and cover with cold salted water. Bring to the boil and cook until tender (about 10 minutes). Drain potatoes and return to the pan, adding cream and butter. Mash until smooth. Season to taste. Divide the mince mixture between four ovenproof dishes. Top with potato and bake until golden (about 10 minutes). 10
