battle of the basin The Arrowtown Bulls will get a chance to avenge their defeat earlier in the season when they take on Wakatipu for a second time on Saturday. As the finals rounds approach, the Bulls, who are in second place in the premiers competition, will be keen to knock Wakatipu off their perch. But it’s a big ask against a high-scoring team that has been beaten just once during the season. The game kicks off at the Queenstown Recreation Ground at 1.45 pm. Go the Bulls!
wild foods feast Arrowtowners will be able to combine eating well with doing good when the Wild Foods Feast returns on Saturday 8 July. From noon the Arrowtown Bowling Club will become a banquet hall, where ticketholders can come come and go, indulging and over-indulging as they please, and all the while raising money for charity. ‘For $30 you can eat as much as you want,’ says Debbie Jackson. ‘There is plenty of food, crockpots on all day, different dishes cooked and people can help themselves or we often go round offering food. There’ll be a pig on a spit, grill sticks, casseroles.’ All the food – which will include a huge selection of game meat including goat, deer, thar, rabbit and pork – has been donated, and that means every cent raised from ticket sales, auctions and raffles will go to the Cancer Society. Since 2013, a tight-knit group of locals have quietly raised over $35,000 for community charities with this annual wild food event. But they’re not looking for recognition. ‘There are five of us that organise this,’ says Debbie, ‘and on the day we get some help from members of the bowling club. We also have fantastic contacts for the food.’ Tickets for the Wild Food Feast are $30. Numbers are limited, so get yours now from Arrowtown Butchery (pick up only) or from Debbie 0272 421999. 3
brentwood charm children Former locals Isla and Finley Brentwood, in Queenstown playing Winter Festival, charmed the kids when they put in an appearance at Arrowtown Primary School. For 45 minutes the brother-and-sister singing duo entertained the whole school with some of the covers that made them famous on Youtube, as well as the audition piece that got them onto X Factor Australia. Mum Kathleen Brentwood, who teaches at the school, says that they had been in before they left to live in Melbourne three years ago and they thought they’d come back to say hi after she’d let them know how much interest and support they’d had from the children following their burgeoning career. ‘We loved seeing and performing for the gorgeous kids at Arrowtown School, thanks for being such a great audience. It's been wonderful being home and receiving such a warm welcome!’

matariki celebration shines On perfectly crisp clear night, Arrowtown families heralded the arrival of the Maori New Year last Thursday at the Arrowtown Community Pre-School’s Library Green event. Organiser Jon Brooks says the event, which was open to the public for the first time this year, was a huge success, with more than 500 locals and visitors turning out and more than $5500 raised for the pre-school. He says the celebration will definitely be back next year, with some fine tuning including a proper stage for the children’s performances and more marshmallow toasting braziers!

your flop-free recipe thai pork lettuce cups
Serves 4 1 red onion, finely diced 4 cloves garlic, crushed 2 chillies, finely sliced 500 g pork mince 4 limes, juiced 2 Tbsp fish sauce 2 Tbsp soy sauce ⅓ cup roasted cashews, crushed ⅓ cup fresh coriander, roughy chopped ⅓ cup fresh mint, roughy chopped ½ cup fresh basil, roughly chopped 1 iceberg lettuce Heat a frypan to medium heat and cook onions, garlic and chilli until soft and fragrant. Add the pork and cook until tender. Add all remaining ingredients except the fresh herbs and lettuce. Wash the lettuce and arrange the 'lettuce cups' on a plate. Arrange the fresh herbs on a separate plate and serve the pork mixture in a bowl. Allow everyone to add their own combination of pork mixture, herbs and even some sweet chilli sauce. Roll up the lettuce leaves and bite it!
