bradley’s quiz The fundraising quiz for rower Bradley Leydon was a riotous, sell-out success and mum Jil says they raised about $4000 to get him to the junior world champs. Bradley, who is training at Lake Karapiro, put in an appearance by video, saying, ‘I may be rowing the single and the only one in the boat but I am not rowing alone down the course when I have you all behind me!’
matariki celebration For the first time this year Arrowtown Pre-School is inviting the wider community to help them celebrate the Maori new year at an evening of music, food and entertainment under the trees on the Library Green on Thursday 29 June. Organiser Jon Brooks says the pre-school’s Matariki Night used to be held at the Durham St school. The children would sing outside with candles, then release lanterns and the whole group would eat together. ‘It became very popular because it is quite an atmospheric night and the kids look seriously cute,’ says Jon. ‘It was so popular last year that we ran out of room and it was clear the event could be something bigger than it was. So this year we've moved to the Library Green and opened it up further to the public.’ It’s promising to be a great night with kids singing, food stalls, hot chocolate and mulled wine under Arrowtown stars. The school kapa haka group will put on a display and Queenstown pop-folk singer Tessa Lyes will play. Marshmallows will be toasted and of course lanterns will be released. The celebration will run from 5.30 to 7.30, and any funds raised will go to the community preschool. It is a cash-only event. 3
bowling season wraps Heather Stirling of the Arrowtown Bowling Club reports that the club has had a very busy season. She says that both divisions performed well in men’s pennants, with Division 1 finishing third and Division 2 second. Club members Alan Brash, Kelvin Jackson, Peter Bain, Grant Hammond, Jenni Heazlewood, Diane Brash and Debbie Jackson were all selected to represent Central Otago. Otago Regional Council is hoping to change the way water in the Arrow catchment and Wakatipu Basin aquifers is managed, setting minimum flows and water allocation limits. It wants to hear the views of the people affected, including those who use the Arrow for recreation or irrigation, and anyone who in concerned for its biodiversity or cultural significance. silent film screening Non-members will have a rare chance to see a true classic on the big screen at Dorothy Browns as Queenstown Film Society welcomes the community to a screening of Fritz Lang’s Destiny. The 1921 film by the legendary director of Metropolis and The Big Heat has recently had an eye-popping restoration and a new orchestral score. ‘The restoration has had rave reviews since it was released in 2015,’ says society president Alison Dench. ‘We’re lucky that with the support of the GoetheInstitut we’re able to open up the screening to everyone so more people will get to see it.’ Entry to the screening, which is at 8.15 pm on Tuesday 4 July, is by koha for non-members. 7
children contribute taoka Arrowtown’s kids are working with other schools and the Lakes District Museum to create an exhibition showcasing the rich heritage of the Wakatipu Basin through their own eyes. Taoka Tuku Iho (which loosely translates as 'treasures passed down' or 'heirlooms') is a concept that starts with school students asking their families what their taoka is and goes from there as the children collect the family treasures for display or create scrapbooks. This style of exhibition has run around the world and numerous times in New Zealand, including at the museum in Arrowtown in 2007. The museum’s education officer Anneliese Stephens is curating the exhibition with David Clarke and she says it promises to be eclectic. 'The exhibition is a great chance for schools from all over the district to collaborate rather than competing on the sports field!), engage in a community event, and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of the growing number of families who live here,' says Anneliese. 'In the last decade we have had new schools open and a generation of new children within them so we think it is time to see what our growing community treasures.' spelling comp triumph The Arrowtown Primary School team of Anna Hutchens, Sophie May and Dominic Smith bested 45 teams from 14 schools to win the year 7 and 8 section of the Otago Daily Times Extra! spelling quiz at Cromwell last week. The victory, with a score of 97 out of 100, came as a bit of a surprise to the team, who claimed not to have practised much. 'It was really exciting that we won and we definitely weren't expecting it,’ says Anna. 'The competition was very nerve wracking once they told us the results after three rounds and we were coming first!'

Base Started Arrowtown school 220 g butter on 1 June. 85 g sugar Wishing Miss Charlotte Lightfoot 1 egg, lightly beaten happy school days. 170 g plain flour Has your child had their first day at school pinch salt or do you have a new baby? ½ cup ground almonds FREE to place, just email a photo, dates with full name and a short message Caramel filling thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 85 g butter ¾ cup brown sugar 2 tbsp golden syrup Icing 1 tsp flaky sea salt 200 g dark chocolate ½ cup sweetened condensed milk 50 g butter 2 Tbsp plain flour 1 tsp sea salt flakes, to garnish Preheat the oven to 190°C. Grease and line a slice tin with baking paper so it goes up the sides. To make the base, melt the butter and sugar in a saucepan. Remove from the heat, stir in the egg and then add flour, salt and ground almonds. Stir to combine. Flatten into the base of the tin. Bake in the oven for 18 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. To make the caramel filling add all the caramel ingredients to a saucepan, stir until only just melted and combined, then remove from the heat and cool for 5 minutes. Pour the caramel over the base. Return to the oven for 10 minutes then remove from the oven and allow to cool. For the icing, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl sitting over a pot of simmering water. Stir gently to combine. Spread over the caramel. Sprinkle with the flaky sea salt. Refrigerate to set, then slice and serve as you like. 10
