pink ribbon breakfast The Arrowtown Business Women's Group Pink Ribbon Breakfast had a great turn out. Jane and the team at Provisions served up breakfast canapés and pink bubbles. Provisions made up four hampers, Chard Farm supplied a trio of Pinot Noir, and Back Country a gorgeous cashmere/merino scarf to be raffled off. The breakfast raised $286 and the raffles $280. The grand total so far is $726, and it’s not too late to donate at tinyurl. com/AtownPink.
adventurous arrowtowners Five Arrowtown 13-year-olds made an epic journey as they took on the Scouts Explorer Challenge Award over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Amelia Peasey, Amber Jarvis, Michaela McLister, Marigold Kunath and Annabelle Ferguson started at Jack Reid Park on Friday, then travelled to Glenorchy and back by foot, bus, gondola, car and mountain bike. They camped at Lake Hayes and Glenorchy, walked up to the Invincible Mine, mountain-biked to the Arrowtown bakery for a pie and finished up at Jack Reid Park on Monday afternoon. The award required that they travel at least 150 km using at least three different modes of transport. It also required that they live up to the Scout motto of ‘Be prepared', as they had to do their own route planning, risk assessments, budgeting, meal planning and gear lists. All five are experienced trampers and things like deciding what to take, camp cooking and navigation were less a challenge and more an opportunity to put into practice what they’ve learned through Scouts – but finding out how much hard work and good communication goes into planning a trip from go to whoa was certainly a learning experience. The girls made sure to write into their itinerary a departure from the normal back-to-basics Scout Camp style – on the Saturday they took the gondola up to lunch at Skyline to celebrate Marigold’s 13th birthday. But it seems one of the biggest highlights of the trip was actually rescuing a sheep that was stuck in a fence along the Rees Valley Road! The girls weren’t entirely on their own for their grand adventure. Mum Jane Peasey offers huge thanks to Juliet Pope, who was their adult ‘shadow party’ and made sure everything went to plan. 3
councillor comment From Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens:
Arrowtown was mentioned 268 times in the 1264 pages of submissions to the QLDC 2017–18 Annual Plan. Thank you to everyone who cares enough about our town to put your thoughts forward. The most controversial topic was the plan to permanently chlorinate the Arrowtown water supply as is done in Queenstown. However, unlike Queenstown that takes its water from an unsecured source (the lake), Arrowtown has good quality source water at our bore and a UV treatment system. Our problems only really begin once the water enters the pipe network. Unfortunately, we are the victims of generations of weekend plumbers who have been making unconsented

connections to our water and sewer network since the time we moved to a reticulated system. Although I do not support permanent chlorination as a bandaid response, the fact remains we do not have a secure network and it is council's responsibility to provide safe drinking water for our communities. I do therefore support chlorination if it provides safe drinking water. On 23 June, the council will vote whether to adopt the recommendations in the Annual Plan including funding chlorination. Regardless of that outcome, the reality is Arrowtown can expect chlorination to continue on a temporary basis at the very least. The ultimate goal is to secure our network and address its weaknesses. This costs money and will take time. As your representative you can be assured this is a focus of attention of the council.

going hard on soft plastic Arrowtown residents have proved their commitment to the environment by enthusiastically embracing soft plastic recycling at the Four Square. The shop is part of the Love NZ programme, which allows the recycling of items like supermarket bags, bread bags and frozen vegetable wrappers that aren’t accepted by the council’s programme. Four Square co-owner Brendon ColmoreWilliams says, ‘We are proud to be involved with this recycling project. Arrowtowners are absolutely fantastic at recycling.’ Two large green bags are filled up every week, and they are collected on a Friday by Smart Environmental. ‘That’s a considerable amount to keep out of the landfills and we all know it takes a long time for plastic bags to break down.’ The packaging is shipped to Melbourne, where it is transformed into bollards, speed bumps, decking and furniture.

students show off The latest exhibition at the museum art gallery, Showing Off, is a vivid demonstration of the artistic talent of the Wakatipu’s teenagers. To judge by the standard of the work, it’s hard to believe all the artists are between 14 and 18. The exhibition is a collection of painting, design, and photography from the highest achieving art students at Wakatipu High School in 2016. The students devised and worked on themes throughout the year and then were asked to select their two best pieces for the exhibition. Each of the artists provided a brief explanation of their work. The works were judged by local artists Paul Green, Che McPherson and Simon Morrison-Deaker. At the awards ceremony the judges, after stressing the difficulty of picking winners from such high-calibre entries, chose Charlie Hotop (design), Athena Cruz (photography) and Lily Gamson (painting). The overall winner was Angela Santos. 9
your flop-free recipe roast tomato soup Serves 4–6 1 kg tomatoes, roughly chopped 2 red onions, roughly chopped 4 cloves garlic, chopped 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger 1 red chilli, finely diced 400 g tin chopped tomatoes 400 g tin coconut milk 250 ml chicken stock 2 tsp brown sugar salt and freshly ground black pepper good handful of pumpkin and sunflower seeds, toasted ½ cup Greek yoghurt Preheat oven to 170°C. Toss the fresh tomatoes, onion and garlic in 1 tablespoon of oil and place on a baking tray. Put in oven for 40 minutes or until completely soft. In a large pot heat the other tablespoon of oil and add the ginger and chilli, cooking for a minute to release flavours. Add the roasted tomatoes and onions along with the tinned tomatoes, coconut milk, stock and sugar. Bring to a gentle simmer for 20 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before blending to a smooth mixture with a handheld blender. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with toasted seed mixture and yoghurt and serve with warm toasted bread on the side. 10
