swimming pool update Steph MacDonald of Arrowtown Swim Club tells us that the survey about the swimming pool got a great response, with 568 people giving their opinions. ‘Out of this we have 98% in support of upgrading the pool, with 2% saying no they would not support it,’ she says. Asked if they would use the pool if it was heated, 4% said they would not and 96% said they would. Armed with that mandate, Steph and Deb McLeod will be going to the council meeting on 31 May, where they will be given 3 minutes to present the case for a pool upgrade.
serial killers Ever wondered about the real life drama that goes on behind the scenes at a TV drama? Make your way to Remarkable Theatre’s latest production and you might just find out. Serial Killers pokes fun at a Shortland Street style hospital soap called Heart of Hearts. Working from a 'play within the play' premise, it cleverly satirises the lives of a group of TV soap writers and actors, and the industry they all work for. Writer James Griffin certainly ought to know what goes on at a TV soap, as he has himself written for Shortland Street. He’s also the creator of TV smash hit Outrageous Fortune, its prequel Westside, The Almighty Johnsons and the movie Sione’s Wedding, so expect Serial Killers to be just as fast-paced, sexy and funny – and definitely not one for the kids. Award-winning director John Goudge has come from Auckland to bring the show together, supported by well-regarded local film maker Scott Kennedy. Multi-talented Arrowtowner Nicole McLean, best known till now for singing and dancing roles in Showbiz Queenstown productions like Chicago and Jesus Christ Superstar, will be playing the dual roles of Simone / Nurse Jane. Serial Killers will be at the Athenaeum Hall for five nights between 10 and 17 June at 8 pm. Tickets are $35 ($30 on the Tuesday and Wednesday) from eventfinda.co.nz and the museum. otago regional council by-election Voting will begin soon in the ORC Dunstan constituency by-election. We asked both candidates what they wanted to say to the people of Arrowtown. Here are their responses. ella lawton Our natural environment is our most important asset. It drives our economy through tourism and is the reason many of us live here. The role of Otago Regional Council (ORC) is to promote the sustainable development and enhancement of Otago's resources for future generations. With experience as a Councillor, and as a scientist and educator, I understand the importance of good science, strong strategy, communication and transparency with the community. Proactive community action is how things get done and I strongly believe ORC needs to support these efforts, particularly on issues of wilding conifers. Volunteer work such as the removal of wildings from Tobins Face carried out by hundreds of volunteers will have made a huge impact. There needs to also be more resources committed to air quality education and regulation to 4
ensure compliance. I am a scientist and tertiary educator who is a resident of Wanaka with a strong background in community support and action. After 3½ years as a QLDC councillor I know the issues our area faces. Queenstown Lakes needs representation around the ORC table, and with your support we could make that a reality. The magic setting of Arrowtown township is at risk from most of the key activities in the ORC’s jurisdiction, water, air, pests and traffic. Water quality in the Arrow River and other key streams such as Mill Creek must be maintained and enhanced.The proposed minimum flow for the Arrow River is vital for protecting the river while ensuring secure supply of water for the Arrow scheme that supplies the areas surrounding Arrowtown. It is important a balance between the needs of all is found through
this process. Arrowtown has one of the region’s highest number of air quality exceedances each winter, mainly due to location. Residents must be warm in their homes and I do not support hard and fast rectification of exceedances. I believe this will improve with education, better use of dry wood, and eventual change to compliant heating appliances. Where there is a strong community will, I support the drive towards removing wilding pines. If elected I will push for ensuring funding support and a strong voice for these and other key activities.

arrowtowner earns silver fern This winter Bradley Leydon is heading off on a grand adventure, representing New Zealand at the world rowing junior championships in Lithuania in August. But don’t imagine that it’s been an easy road getting there for the 18-year-old local lad, who attended Arrowtown Montessori then Arrowtown Primary before going to John McGlashan College in Dunedin. Bradley first gave rowing a go at McGlashan just three years ago, and he didn’t have a lot of success at first. After a nasty rugby injury he started to train more seriously and placed at club and school regattas, but it wasn’t until 2016 that he gained his first Maadi Cup medals, including a bronze in the U17 single. This kick-started Bradley and he set out with ruthless determination to really make his mark at Maadi 2017. Over the summer break Jock Jolly invited Bradley to row in the Wakatipu Rowing Club men’s quad, which forced him to row up to match the other men in the boat, and with this crew Bradley won bronze at the NZ Nationals. Along the way he learned some valuable new techniques from Jock. In March at the Maadi Cup Bradley worked his way steadily through the heats of the U18 Single. In the final he aimed to start strong, get in front and stay in front, and the strategy worked. Goal number 1 ticked off. The win got him to the NZ juniors trials. Goal number 2 ticked off. After an intense week trialling at Karapiro he was named as a member of the NZ juniors team to attend the world championships in Lithuania rowing the single scull. Goal number 3 ticked off. Mum Jil says Bradley is very proud of his achievement, particularly the opportunity to wear the silver fern. ‘It’s every schoolboy’s dream.’ Bradley will miss the rest of the school term as he goes up to Cambridge for 6 weeks’ training. He will then train in Bulgaria for two weeks before heading to Lithuania for the world championships. Of course all this travel and training doesn’t come cheap and Bradley’s family are fundraising for him with a quiz night on Saturday 17 June at the Arrowtown Golf Club. your flop-free recipe quince, apple and boysenberry crumble 800 g quinces, peeled, cored and chopped 2 lemons, juice and zest 400 g apples, peeled, cored and chopped 200 g boyseberries (fresh or frozen) 4 Tbsp of your favourite honey (or maple syrup) crumble topping ⅔ cup rolled oats ⅔ cup almonds, roughly chopped ⅔ cup walnuts, roughly chopped ¼ cup coconut threads 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon ½ cup soft brown sugar 50 g butter, cut into chunks Preheat oven to 180°C. Place the quinces, lemon zest and juice and a small amount of water in a saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil, lower the heat, cover and simmer for 25 minutes until tender. Add the apple halfway through. When the fruit is tender and excess liquid evaporated add the boysenberries then stir in the honey to taste. Mix all the crumble ingredients together and rub between your fingers until the mixtures becomes like breadcrumbs. Transfer the fruit mixture into a baking dish and sprinkle the crumble mixture over the top. Bake for 20–30 minutes or until the top is bubbling and becoming golden brown. Serve with thick yoghurt or ice cream. This is one the family is sure to enjoy! 10
