anzac day inspiration On Anzac Day Wakatipu High School student Olivia Ray addressed the congregation at the Athenaeum Hall. Her moving speech touched on the lives of two World War I soldiers and pressed for an end to war. Olivia reflects on her experience: For as long as I can remember Anzac Day has been incredibly important to me, but it was especially memorable this time around. Growing up, public speaking was a skill I always admired in my sister; I feared nothing more than the annual school speeches. I still get incredibly nervous when speaking and Anzac Day was even more so. What weighed heavily on me was the importance of the day and making sure my speech connected with as many people as possible. I was nervous about specific aspects of my speech. I addressed desertion, execution and post traumatic stress disorder, topics that aren’t always mentioned, but I wanted to emphasise the other battle New Zealanders were going through, the mental battle that continued even when they came home. Initially I wasn’t sure I would be able to write an Anzac Day speech at all, simply because I was fearful of not doing the subject justice. But then Jim Boult told me the story of his father going to war and the hardships our men and women endured. I went home that night and wrote my entire speech. I was always going to include the story of Victor Spencer, the Bluff boy who signed up for war at the age of 15 and was later shot for desertion, because it touched my heart the moment I read it. I heard afterwards that some of his relatives had been in the hall, which was pretty special. Although there were 700 people listening, I knew that there was one World War II veteran in the front row. Ultimately, I was just giving my speech to him. 3
councillor comment This update from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: It was a great occasion last Sunday at the official opening of the beautifully restored Arrowtown Gaol. The restoration is a feather in the cap of our unique little town, which boasts one of the highest concentrations in New Zealand of category 1 and 2 listed buildings. I tip my hat to all the funding partners and volunteers who worked so hard to bring this piece of history back to life. Submissions have closed for the next round of QLDC’s Annual Plan. Councillors now go through them before agreeing on the council budgets for the next 12 months. One of the big decisions for Arrowtown is our water supply and it is proposed is to chlorinate our water – thank you to all those who made a submission on this and rest assured if there is a viable alternative it will be considered. Following on with the ‘plan’ theme, we are two years into a long overdue revamp of the District Plan, with hearings on the proposed plan over the next 12 months. We are very concerned to protect our outstanding natural landscape while still allowing for appropriate growth. As 96.97% of our district is classified as outstanding natural landscape with development confined to the remaining 3.03%, you can understand the challenge we face 4
catering for a booming population. The recently released Wakatipu Land Use Study, which is on the QLDC website, looks at this issue. I know some Arrowtowners have concerns about the development potential it identifies at our doorstep but council is yet to form an opinion on this study and when it does it will be notified as a variation to the proposed District Plan.

businesses to smarten up their presentation. He says the 'Pride in your Premises' competition came about after recent strolls in the district's downtown areas. 'For every business that is immaculately and proudly presented in line with our status as a leading visitor destination, I noticed another that would benefit from some attention to its appearance.' He notes that improvements need not be costly. 'It may be as simple as ensuring shop fronts are clear of rubbish during the day, giving shopfronts a lift through a damn good clean, and being a bit creative.' Jim will be judging entries himself. 'I’ll be looking for a couple of “before and after” photos and a description of what a business has done to improve their street frontage.' starry stunner When real-estate agent and photographer Todd Weeks got a call from a friend that the Aurora Australis was going to be good that night, he headed straight up to Advance Terrace with his camera. ‘I’ve always wanted to see the aurora but always missed out. I was starting to get jealous of people who had.’ Straight away he could see shards of white light shooting up slowly, but when he took a photo he saw much more. ‘The first photo was amazing, but things just kept getting better.’ Todd took this week’s cover photo about 5 minutes in. ‘Most aurora photographers head up into the mountains for 6 or 7 hours to get a photo like this. I just walked up the road and was back home within an hour. I was in the right place at the right time.’ Todd says the Aurora Australis is due to be good again within the next couple of weeks. Make it easy and order your refreshments with us. • Food catering options • Free delivery • Discount pricing 1 Tbsp butter and olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 150 ml chicken stock 32 ADAMSON DRIVE, ARROWTOWN 150 ml white wine Call Brendon 021 671 000 1 kg cooked whole chicken or 2 large cooked chicken breasts 400 ml crème fraiche (or yoghurt) 3 Tbsp fresh tarragon leaves, roughly torn decent amount of freshly ground black pepper and salt 4 sheets filo pastry 4 Tbsp butter, melted Preheat oven to 180/200°C. In a frying pan, heat the butter and oil. Add the onion and garlic, stirring until translucent. Pour in the chicken stock and wine, then simmer over high heat until the liquid has reduced by half and thickened. Strip the chicken into bite-sized pieces. Add these to the pan along with the crème fraiche. Scatter over the tarragon and season with pepper and salt. Mix well and spoon into a pie dish. Brush the pastry sheets with melted butter, cut each sheet into 6 pieces and scrunch each piece up, placing on top of the pie. Repeat until the pie is covered. Drizzle any remaining butter over. Place into preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve with a seasonal salad or vegetables and let the family tuck in! 10
