The Remarkable Vocals choral ensemble will be presenting an eclectic mix of music at the Thomas Brown Gallery at 3 pm on Sunday 30 April. Musical director Sue Patterson says that among the favourites from Haydn to 20th century classics there will be a special bracket for Anzac Day, with upbeat wartime songs as well as sublime classical music including the stirring ‘Dies Irae' and stunningly beautiful ‘Lacrymosa’ from the Mozart Requiem. Guest soloist is Anna Morley from Dunedin.Tickets ($30 including halftime refreshments) are available from the museum and Summerfields Wilkinsons pharmacies.

On a whim, Gloria buys an extraordinary designer handbag, setting off a series of unusual events that transform her remaining days. That’s the scenario of Gloria’s Handbag, the latest production from writer-actor Helen Moulder and writer-director Sue Rider, the team that brought Meeting Karpovsky and Playing Miss Havisham to Arrowtown. Helen plays all six characters and shows off her talents as a story teller, singer and even magician. Gloria’s Handbag is a delightful, modern, magical mystery with music from Mozart's The Magic Flute. The production, which has been performed in living rooms, art galleries, libraries, community halls and small theatres in New Zealand and Australia, comes with great reviews: the Dominion Post described it as ‘highly enjoyable entertainment’, a Theatreview contributor wrote that ‘There are so many goodies in Gloria’s Handbag, it's well worth rummaging through’, and Keeping up with New Zealand reported that Helen as Gloria was ‘a marvel’. Gloria’s Handbag will be at the Athenaeum Hall on Tuesday 9 May at 7.30 pm. Tickets ($25 adult, $10 child) are available from eventfinda. co.nz. coronet forest for the chop? Part of the solution to the wilding pine problem may be at hand, with QLDC asking for feedback on a plan to harvest the Coronet Forest, the source of many a seedling. This comes after 85% of respondents in last year’s consultation were in favour of early harvest. Council says that a full harvest will produce 67,940 m3 of recoverable log product over two years, with most of the crop destined for export. They also say revegetation of the site as soon as possible is key because the location is so visually prominent, and to stop competing Douglas fir seedlings growing up. The plan is to establish 30% of the site in beech forest, 10% in grey shrubland species and tussock, and 60% in introduced grasses initially to suppress woody weeds. egg hunt a smash Organiser Melissa Hinves says the 2017 Amazing Arrowtown Egg Hunt was, well, amazing. ‘So many people turned out in the beautiful weather to hunt for the 40 “eggs” that all we could see was a blanket of maps and smiles.’ There were an estimated 650 people on Easter Sunday alone. Melissa says she’d like to thank everyone who took part and made the hunt so successful. ‘I must also thank all the fabulous sponsors of the eggs, APBA and Creative Queenstown for their backing and the lovely cubs and scouts that helped me run the hunt.’ Egg hunt prize winners were Seth Richens (who was so excited he ran several laps of his garden when he found out) and Oliver Bradley. Matt Dobb won a handmade Patagonia egg for his cheeky picture on the hunt. 5

your flop-free recipe anzac slice 1¼ cups plain flour 1¼ cups rolled oats 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup shredded coconut 2 tsp ground ginger 150 g butter, chopped 2 Tbsp golden syrup ½ tsp baking soda 2 Tbsp boiling water Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a baking pan with paper. Combine flour, oats, sugar, coconut and ground ginger in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre. Put butter and syrup in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes until smooth. Mix baking soda and boiling water in a jug. Remove mixture from heat. Stir in baking soda. Add to flour mixture. Stir to combine. Transfer to dish. Pat down using the back of a spoon, press mixture evenly into pan. Bake for 25 minutes until golden. Allow to cool in pan. Cut into squares and enjoy. 10
