have your say with ORC After taking part in the recent Big Chop of wilding trees, two year 8 students at Arrowtown Primary School have been inspired to take the campaign further. Sam Davis and Zoe Crawford want people to urge Otago Regional Council to increase funding of wilding control.They say ORC have indicated they will spend $100,000 on wildings in Otago in 2017/18. ‘We think they should spend 10 times as much,’ They would like Arrowtowners to make submissions on the ORC’s draft annual plan. ‘Remember to mention that no money is being spent on the Arrowtown area.’ The draft annual plan is available from orc.govt.nz and at the library. autumn festival adds colour The Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival is nearly upon us and it's gearing up to be another good one, with a couple of new events on the programme. For the first time ever, on Thursday 20 April from 5 pm, the festival will have an opening ceremony, including a performance by the Arrowtown School kapa haka group and an official opening by Mayor Jim Boult. While you’re there, you can relax to music from locals Jessie Coutts and Mathurin Molgat, enjoying a wine or a hot chocolate and a nice hot bacon buttie. From 7 pm there's a chance to challenge your general knowledge at a quiz. Teams are four-strong, and you can turn up on the night but it might pay to register online. It’s $40 per team and if you like you can order a platter from Artisan Catering for $40. Friday is a day for the kids, with juggling workshops, the scarecrow competition and another new event, the Kids Talent Quest, from 5 pm. On Saturday there’ll be a bigger-than-ever parade and market day from 10 am. In the evening the social set will don their glad wrags for the Great Arrowtown Party, with supper by Artisan Catering and music from the Hamiltones. Festival co-ordinator Carole Watts expects it to be popular and warns you should get your tickets now via Eventfinda to avoid disappointment. Likewise for the Pie, Pint and Pinot (music from Paul Winders and Nikki Lindsay) from 12.30 pm on Sunday, which sold out last year. ‘Thanks for supporting us, Arrowtown, and we’ll see you there!’ says Carole. smorgasbord of film Queenstown Film Society has launched its 2017 programme and it’s looking like a vintage year. The community group for film fans screens a hand-picked selection of 20 classic films, world cinema and documentaries on Tuesday evenings over winter at Dorothy Browns. Society president Alison Dench says the committee is delighted with this year's programme. ‘It’s genuinely varied. We’ve got classic comedies and dramas, recent world cinema and absorbing documentaries. It’s just the right mixture of challenging and entertaining!’ A real drawcard for cinephiles will be a rare chance to see the film that inspired Star Wars, Akira Kurosawa’s 1958 epic The Hidden Fortress. Other highlights include Persepolis, an animated film about an Iranian childhood, Tangerine, an American caper comedy filmed on iPhones, and several recent films from the NZ International Film Festival. Opening night, at Dorothy Browns at 8.15 pm on Tuesday 2 May, will be Argentinian black comedy Wild Tales. garlic & rosemary studded lamb

1.5 kg leg of lamb 4 garlic cloves, sliced 4 sprigs rosemary, sliced into smaller pieces big bunches of rosemary for lining the roasting dish ¼ cup Dijon mustard ¼ cup thyme honey ½ cup dry white wine Preheat oven to 200°C. Cut small slits in the lamb and push sliced garlic and rosemary in. Line roasting dish with rosemary bunches and place lamb on a rack in the dish. Add ½ cup white wine and ½ cup water. Bake the lamb for 40–50 minutes. If you like, after 20 minutes throw in some parboiled potatoes to roast in the juices and add a bulb of garlic. Combine mustard and honey and brush over the lamb. Return to the oven for a further 10 minutes until lamb is done. Remove from dish and set aside to rest. To serve, slice the lamb thickly, and serve with the roasted potatoes and mint sauce. Yum! A quick roast the whole family will enjoy. 10
