amazing egg hunt The hunt will be on this Easter Sunday and Monday as kids prowl the streets in search of eggs. The Easter bunny is hiding printed eggs around Arrowtown and while there will be no chocolate eggs to find, the best hunters will be in to win an Easter hamper. Hop on down to the Arrowtown Library between 10 am and 4 pm on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday to pick up maps. The event is free, but there will be a gold coin donation for the Cubs, who are helping run the egg hunt. This community event is the creation of Apt Design, run by the APBA and sponsored by local businesses.
Change is afoot at Saffron Restaurant and Blue Door as the Arrowtown icons change hands on 1 April. Arnold The new Dana Griffiths, Brad McWhirter, Dave owners, led by locals Dave and Vicky Arnold from Flying Trestles with Michael Hill, John Watson and Nick Piper, are enthusiastic about the new era but it seems that regulars will still feel at home once they take the reins. Many of the staff will stay on, with Brad McWhirter, who has been Pete Gawron’s wing man for over 10 years, stepping into the limelight in the Saffron kitchen. Dana Griffiths, one of the longest-serving members of staff, will take over front of house from Mel Hill. General manager Karen Wake says she ishonoured to be taking the baton and to continue growing Saffron and the Blue Door for the new owners. Agave, the restaurant at the back of the alleyway, will be closed for a while. Dave says they have exciting plans for the place, but it's a case of 'watch this space' for now. Dave and Vicky, along with the other shareholders and staff, pay tribute to the history of the Saffron/Blue Door/Agave trio. 'We would like to start by wishing Pete, Mel and their girls all the very best for their times ahead. Right from the early days it has been their excitement and sincerity that has helped to achieve the dining culture experienced now in Arrowtown.'

sawpit wildings blitzed Anton Schmitz of the Arrowtown Choppers is impressed with the turnout to the community group’s Big Chop on Otago Anniversary Day, with an estimated 100 or so people heading up Sawpit for a picnic and to deal to wilding trees. ‘The community is really engaged about this issue, right down to school kids who not only came and cut trees but are working on school projects as well,’ he says. The group is well resourced with tools donated by both Mitre 10 and the Weedbusters organisation, and a Facebook page is on the way. Wednesday evening chops (meet at the bottom of the Bush Creek Track at 6.30 pm) will stop after Easter when evening light will be getting scarce but there will be a few weekend visits over winter. ‘We’d be keen to do another picnic up there as it was such a great family activity!’ For updates go to the Google Group at tinyurl.com/AtownChoppers.

stomping by the river Come Saturday 15 April the skate park and pump track will be humming with activity as the Arrowtown Stompdown hits town. The Stompdown is a skateboard and bike competition for all skill levels and all ages, and organiser Kim Anderson says anyone can give it a go. Every rider will get to throw down in a one-minute run on the skate park and there will be prizes given out throughout the day. Bikers will also be able to challenge themselves with timed runs at the pump track. ‘Step up and see how fast your laps get!’ says Kim. The Arrowtown Stompdown, brought to you by Boardertown Queenstown and Arrow Bikes and a whole lot of other local sponsors, runs from 1 pm to about 5 pm. Registration opens at 11 am on the day and pre-registration is available from Arrow Bikes in Bush Creek Road and Boardertown at Five Mile.

your flop-free recipe plum puff pastry tarts 1 packet puff pastry 4 Tbsp sugar ½ tsp cinnamon 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted 3 or 4 medium plums, pitted then cut in half, then cut in thirds lemon zest vincotto or concentrated balsamic vinegar Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Roll out pastry and cut into rectangles 15 x 8 cm. Place the pastry on the baking tray. Stir sugar and cinnamon until combined in a small bowl. Brush the pastry with some of the melted butter and sprinkle with some of the cinnamon sugar. Arrange the plum slices in the middle of the pastry, overlapping a little, making sure to leave about a 1 cm border around the edges. Brush the plums with the remaining butter and sprinkle with the leftover cinnamon sugar. Grate over a goodish bit of lemon zest followed with a good drizzle of vincotto. Bake until plums are soft and the pastry is golden. Allow to cool for a few minutes and then enjoy! 10
