gibbston wine & food Celebrating locally produced wine and food, with wineries from Gibbston and artisan food makers from Central Otago, the SkyCity Queenstown Gibbston Wine & Food Festival was first created to mark the end of the growing season and the beginning of the harvest. In its 11th annual cycle, the festival is now hosted in Queenstown, where locals and visitors can experience the region’s lip-smackingly good food and wine in one convenient and beautiful place. This year the festival has expanded the number of stalls to 28 local exhibitors, and on the programme are wine masterclasses and live music. A $10 tasting fee applies to attend one of three masterclasses. The community theme is supported by the festival’s location, Queenstown Gardens, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. A beautiful park surrounded by mountain and lake views – what better place for visitors of all ages to wander, eat, taste and sample their way through an autumn day. The SkyCity Queenstown Gibbston Wine & Food Festival will be held on Saturday 18 March from 11 am. Your paid entry allows you to sample wine, food and other producers’ goodies, and a tasting glass with 3 tasting tokens is provided. A $10 fee applies to those who are not tasting wine. There is no charge for accompanied children under 18 years old, and a children’s area will keep them cool and entertained. Tickets are available from Eventfinda, and day sales are also available. 3
chef’s tour of sri lanka Arrowtown MasterChef contestant Jaimie Stodler has recently returned from a trip of a lifetime to Sri Lanka, where she worked alongside some of the world’s top chefs at the Dilmah School of Tea in Sri Lanka. Jaimie, who with Josie Geimecke won the all-expenses paid trip at the Dilmah High Tea competition at the 2016 NZ Chefs’ National Salon, spent several days in tea plantations and the classroom learning alongside 140 delegates of the World Association of Chefs’ Societies. She also did six catering events. ‘It was great to represent New Zealand abroad and learn exciting new cuisines,’ says Jaimie. ‘It was an incredible experience. We made some amazing contacts and have been provided with some
international opportunities to consider.’ But it was four days working with disabled and underprivileged children through the MJF Charitable Foundation that really struck home. ‘I am a mom and to see these children…just say there were major tears.’

predator free arrowtown A new community group, Predator Free Arrowtown, aims to support the eradication of rodents, stoats, weasels, ferrets and possums within the Arrow Basin using traps. ‘These pests prey on native birds, lizards and insect species, which has hammered local biodiversity,’ says organiser Ben Teele. The first trap line will be along the Bush Creek track. ‘If predator numbers can be reduced in the area, then the native species, including tui, bellbirds and fantails, will be able to multiply, and some balance will be restored.’ Arrowtown, unusually, also has several breeding NZ falcons, which is a nationally vulnerable species. Twenty traps have already been sponsored by local businesses, but Ben is still looking for residents to check trap and monitoring lines, or sponsor a trap either for the wider area or their back garden. autumn festival talent sought The 33rd Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival (20 to 25 April) is fast approaching, with a full line-up including the iconic Market Day and Parade, as well as the perennial favourite Pie, Pint and Pinot. New to the programme this year is the WakatipKids Talent Quest on Friday 21 April. Organiser Charlotte Graf says school age children are invited to prepare a song, dance or comedy skit. ‘We encourage children to “think outside the box” with their audition pieces and let their imagination run wild,’ she says. ‘You can be inspired by other artists but we really want to see original ideas and concepts.’ Fifteen finalists will perform at the Athenaeum Hall in front of an audience and judges Anna Stuart (Queenstown School of Dance), Lisa Moore (Drama Queenstown), Margaret O’Hanlon (Whirlwind Productions) and singer/comedian Shaun Vining. Prizes will be awarded for winners and runners-up in each category along with an audience ‘most popular’ vote. Auditions will be held at the Arrowtown School Hall on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 April. your flop-free recipe broad bean falafels 1 cup cooked broad beans 1 can chickpeas, well rinsed 4 garlic cloves 1 onion, roughly chopped 1 Tbsp coriander 1 Tbsp cumin good pinch cayenne pepper ½ cup fresh thyme salt and pepper to taste ½ tsp baking soda good squeeze fresh lemon juice and some grated zest olive oil Preheat oven to 180°C. Put all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until everything is mixed. Roll the mixture into balls, then chill for 10 minutes in the fridge. Line an oven tray with baking paper and evenly space the falafel balls, drizzle lightly with olive oil and bake for about 10 minutes each side. Serve with yoghurt sauce – I made mine with ½ cup greek yoghurt, chopped fresh thyme, lemon zest and lemon juice. Throw in a salad on the side and you’re good to go! Serves 4 as main but could easily be a starter with a spicy chutney. 10
