godzone flies through This week the Godzone adventure race came through Arrowtown for the second time in its six-year history. After meandering their way from Queenstown on foot, bike and kayak, competitors in the week-long expedition race had to battle up the Arrow River from the Kawarau to Whitechapel, then on foot on the Queenstown Trail through Arrowtown to Bush Creek and beyond. The 85 teams of four crazy adventure racers were quite a sight, and one team stopped off at the Fork & Tap on the way!
The sun may not be down but the stars will certainly be out at the Arrowtown Welcome Party hosted by the New Orleans on Thursday 9 March. Eight big sports celebrities – Allan Border, Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Brendon McCullum, Stephen Fleming, Sir Ian Botham, Jeff Wilson and Tom Walsh – will be joining the festivities, signing autographs and meeting fans. Again this year Arrowtown is inviting golfers, volunteers, celebrities, visitors and locals to join the celebration of the start of the NZ Open golf and sample some good Otago hospitality. The evening kicks off at 5.30 pm with the Miners Band, Buckingham Belles and Mini Belles performing at the Village Green as people are gathering. The opening ceremony will involve a traditional piping in of the haggis and the tournament will be declared open by cricket icon Stephen Fleming. Musical entertainment will be provided by the 12-piece Celtic Sounds, an extraordinary band that pushes the boundaries of traditional bagpipe music with everything from heavy metal and Southern Dixie to the Beatles and ABBA. There will be free children’s entertainment, including face painting, hula hooping and balloon modelling. Food and beverage stalls will operate from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm and the bars and restaurants will also be open of course. The La Rumbla After Party is always popular when the street entertainment finishes.

A couple of weeks ago the New Zealand and Australian prime ministers made an unexpected low-key visit to Arrowtown to lay wreaths at the cenotaph. Mayor Jim Boult, Councillor Scott Stevens, the RSA, fire brigade, Scouts and Arrowtown Coummunity Preschool – as well as hordes of media – were invited to attend at short notice, and after a brief ceremony Bill and Mary English and Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull stayed to chat for some time.

it takes a village It’s not cheap to be an elite athlete these days if Sport NZ doesn’t fund your sport. But 21-year-old Piera Hudson, New Zealand’s top female ski racer, aims to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics and her family and friends are doing everything they can to get her there. Piera’s annual expenses amount to $134,000. To raise that money, on top of their usual jobs John and Fiona Hudson started Coastal Cowhides. The enterprise sells cow and reindeer hide products and furniture, with 100% of the profits going to fund Piera’s programme. Friends volunteer their time to help, and when the Hudsons take their showcase around the country, friends and family support them and put them up. This Northern Hemisphere season Piera has ticked off all five qualifications to be nominated for selection, three of the events being in Pyeong Chang, South Korea, the Olympics venue. She is now preparing to represent New Zealand at the 2017 Alpine Junior World Championships in Åre, Sweden. Coastal Cowhides will be fundraising for Piera at the Lake Hayes Pavilion and Arrowtown Community Hall most of March.

300g butter ¾ cup cocoa 2½ cups brown sugar 3 eggs 1½ cups flour ¼ packet milk choc bits ¼ packet white choc bits Preheat oven to 180ºC. Line the base of 18 cm x 23 cm slice tin with baking paper. Place butter and cocoa in large bowl and heat in microwave until butter is melted, stir. Add brown sugar and mix well. Add eggs and flour 1 egg and ½ cup flour at a time, making sure to mix after each addition. Add choc bits and combine. Bake for 30–40 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn onto wire rack. Dust with icing sugar when cool. Nice served warm as a dessert with berries. 10
