french film festival Sacrebleu! The largest French cultural event on New Zealand’s calender is on its way to Arrowtown. From 16 to 26 March the Alliance Française French Film Festival will set up shop in Dorothy Browns Cinema, with 38 screenings of films that represent the very best of modern French cinema, from comedies to thrillers via documentaries and a critically acclaimed biopic of Jacques Cousteau. Arrowtown audiences will get the chance to experience the work of Dunedin’s renowned Fortune Theatre as it branches out into the regions with a touring production of an exciting new play. My Dad’s Boy is the story of a young man trying to figure his father out. Peter used to play for Otago and in 1985, despite a loss to the Lions in the House of Pain, he came closing to joining David Kirk’s All Blacks. Honest! Life hasn’t really been as simple since. His son is a chip off the old block in a 2017 kind of way. While he’s writing this play about his dad he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant. Men, their myths and realities fuel this richly honest Kiwi comedy. The play is written by award-winning twentysomething Finnius Teppett and directed by Anya Tate-Manning. The production brings to the stage Greg Johnson, a veteran of theatre, television and film who you’ll recognise from shows like Shortland Street, Outrageous Fortune, Go Girls and Dirty Laundry. The production also has two young local hotshots, Alex Wilson playing the titular Boy and Abby Howells showing off her versatility as she plays a range of characters from Helen Clark to Granddad. My Dad’s Boy will be at the Athenaeum Hall on Friday 10 March at 7.30 pm. Arrowtown is in for a very special musical treat. Following his hugely successful concerts in 2016, pianist Ben Waters is returning to in 2017 with a glittering line-up. Ben has played with the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Shakin’ Stevens and Ray Davies of the Kinks, as well as Jools Holland, who last year described him as the best boogie woogie pianist in Europe. This time the band will feature not only Ben’s son Tom on alto sax, but also Tim Ries of the Rolling Stones, who gave Tom his first instrument. Adding to the Rolling Stones connection will be Bernard Fowler, one of the legendary band’s backing vocalists. And then there’s singer/songwriter Chris Jagger (Mick’s younger brother) on guitar and vocals. Ben Waters will be playing the Athenaeum Hall on Tuesday 7 March 2017. Do you work in Queenstown? Are you struggling to find an all-day parking spot? Queenstown Lakes District Council may have the answer for you. The Council is reviving its underused carpooling scheme, offering free carparks in the Boundary St and Ballarat St carparks for vehicles with at least three ride-sharing scheme members. The new scheme will take effect from March 10, and applications for the 100 annual permits close on 24 February. Full details are online at qldc.govt.nz. 7
getting the message across Arrowtown teacher Nicole Fawcett and her web-developer husband Greg are working to help schools communicate with parents, staff and students more effectively. Their recently launched Message My Way software lets schools send messages in the way the recipient wants to get them, be it Facebook Messenger, Twitter, the school’s Facebook page, messaging apps like Slack, Kik and Telegram, as well as SMS or even voicemail. Message My Way was inspired by conversations with Arrowtown School management. ‘Arrowtown School is very tech-savvy and they’re always looking for new ways to do things better and more easily,’ says Nicole. ‘They’ve been really engaged throughout the whole development process.’ Deputy principal Tim Young says Message My Way was hugely beneficial in the event of snow days last year, when they were beta testing the service. ‘We did a communications survey after the second snow day and the parents just raved about it, they absolutely loved it,’ Tim says.

¼ cup flour 2 tsp beef stock powder 2 Tbsp oil 200 g bacon (about 4 rashers) 2 medium onions, diced 1½ cups water or vege stock salt & pepper to taste Thinly slice lambs fry and put in plastic bag with flour and beef stock powder, shake to cover with the flour. Cut any long strips in half again so they’re bite sized. Remove excess fat and rind from the bacon and chop coarsely. Leave a bit of streaky fat on the bacon, it adds to the flavour. Heat oil in a frypan, add bacon and onion and fry 8 to 10 minutes over medium to high temperature until onion is soft and bacon is fairly well cooked but not crisp. Add lambs fry and lightly fry a few minutes turning often to brown evenly, you don’t need to cook it through at this stage. Pour water or vege stock over and season. Bring to a gentle boil, reduce temperature to a simmer and continue to cook for 20 minutes stirring every 5 minutes or so. It may take a little more time but you want a fairly thick gravy runs a little slowly off a spoon. 10
