ultra-fast broadband Arrowtown is set to take a step into the digital future with the unexpectedly early introduction of ultra-fast broadband (UFB). The Government announced last week that its UFB programme will be extended, and Arrowtown is on the list to join Queenstown with access to superspeedy internet. Clutha MP Todd Barclay is encouraging all those who can access UFB to make the most of it. ‘Across the country connectivity is about 30 percent so I strongly encourage people who can to connect and reap the benefits,’ he says. However, it looks like the internet might be fast but the rollout not so much: the forecast completion date for Arrowtown/ Lake Hayes is still over four years away, in the second half of 2021.

summer voices Sue Patterson and Friends’ annual afternoon of song for the Valentine season has established itself firmly on the Queenstown calendar. This year’s recital promises to be as romantic as ever, featuring some of the best-loved arias, solos and duets from opera and musical theatre. This time around the concert showcases voices new to the music scene in a heartwarming display of local talent. A highlight will be songs from Japanese-born local Tamaki Iida, while another newcomer, Brazilian Michele Schade, is more than a match for the magnificent Villa-Lobos ‘Bachianas Brasilieras’. They will be joined by Sally Geddes, Deryck Marshall, Deborah Lind, Anna Morley, Sue Patterson, Alan Pickard and Ailsa Woods in a programme that spans the centuries from Purcell to Andrew Lloyd Webber via Puccini and Cole Porter. Alison Frude and Jeanette Roberson provide the accompaniment. The group’s leader, soprano Sue Patterson, is a singing teacher in the Queenstown area, also known for directing the Remarkable Vocals ensemble. Sue has sung in the Southern Opera chorus and was soloist in the Canada leg of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament 2005 Americas tour. The concert will be held in the relaxed setting of the Thomas Brown Gallery in Speargrass Flat Road at 3 pm on Sunday 12 February. Tickets are $35, including Valentine’s refreshments, and are available at the Lakes District Museum as well as Wilkinson’s and Summerfields pharmacies. 3

councillor comment This update on local government matters from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: Swimming in the Arrowtown Community Pool with its chilly water temperature encourages fast swimmers. In, out and don’t muck about. Great for developing future swimming champions, however as a counciloperated facility we would like to see it used more, over a longer season. I have been working with the Sport and Rec team to put a paper to council as part of this year’s Annual Plan process for funding to improve the heating system. This has been on the agenda for a while but after a recent visit I made to the Arrowtown Scouts, the proposal has started to gain some traction. When asked to pitch some ideas for council consideration, our local Scouts came up with some great creative ideas. I can’t do much to further the establishment of a lolly shop on Tobin’s Track but the heating of the pool is a cause worth pursuing. A decision on Annual Plan spending for the 2017/18 year will be made in the next few months. Another mid-summer issue is the resilience of our water supply. We are currently under precautionary summer chlorination until the end of March. This has upset some residents, however Arrowtown’s water has been found to be vulnerable in the past and chlorine kills small bugs such as bacteria and viruses that can get through filtration systems. play with the pros Tournament co-host Millbrook Resort is giving local golfers the chance to win a coveted spot playing alongside their golfing heroes at the 2017 ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in March. Arrowtown Golf Club will hold free qualifying days for the 2017 Millbrook Resort ISPS Handa New Zealand Open Challenge on 9 February (women) and 11 February (men). An overall club winner will be drawn from participants who score 30 Stablefords or more, as long as they have a maximum handicap of 18 and are at least 18 years old. Arrowtown’s representative will compete in a tense play off against six other local clubs on the final hole of Millbrook’s Coronet Nine on February 25 to decide who takes home the ultimate prize, a minimum of two days’ play at Millbrook and The Hills during the 2017 NZ Open. Challenge tournament director Allan McKay says, ‘Playing in the biggest and most prestigious golf tournament held in New Zealand, alongside masters of the game, is an opportunity that local golfers can only dream of!’ Perhaps you can repeat the feats of last year’s home town hero, Erwin Haefliger from Arrowtown Golf Club!

your flop-free recipe breakfast muffins 1 cup chopped dates ½ cup water 1 teaspoon baking soda 50 g softened butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 egg, beaten 2 very ripe bananas, mashed 1 loosely packed cup grated carrot 1 cup chopped walnuts or other nuts 1½ cups wholemeal flour ½ cup bran 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon mixed spice Preheat oven to 180ºC. Place dates and water in a small pot and boil for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently to mash up the dates. Add baking soda and mix

well – it will froth up a bit. Beat butter with sugar and vanilla until thick, light and creamy, then beat in egg. Mix in mashed banana, carrot, nuts and dates. Stir flour, bran, baking powder and mixed spice together. Add to wet mixture and fold the two mixtures together (with a large metal spoon) until well combined. Do not overmix. Spoon batter into lined muffin pans. Bake for 20 minutes or until muffins spring back when lightly touched.
