post office market Overnight rain caused a few worries for the organisers, but the weather gods worked their magic just in time for Arrowtown Post Office Market Day. ‘The day started out pouring with rain and I lost a bit of sleep the night before,’ says Jane Peasey, ‘but by 10.30 the rain had stopped and the sun shone in the afternoon.’ There were about 90 stalls this year, with a focus on handmade and locally crafted goods including jewellery, woodwork, clothing, handmade soaps and candles. ‘There are so many talented people in this area!’ And the Arrow Miners’ Band performed as they have done every year since the annual market started 20 years ago. The market was popular as ever with locals and a smattering of tourists. ‘It’s a great time of year to have a market as lots of Arrowtowners have family and friends staying and everyone is relaxed and happy after Christmas,’ says Jane. The market was the brainchild of Ann Bain, who now lives in Wanaka. When the museum took over the running of the post office and money needed to be raised for its upkeep, it was Ann who came up with the idea for a market day. ‘Ann ran the market for 18 years,’ says Jane ‘and raised tens of thousands of dollars for this great cause.’ The market is now organised by Jane, Wendy Clarke and Denise Heckler. 3

east meets west In February local artist Ben Ho will be moving some of his arresting, detailed, often dramatic paintings from his Lake Hayes gallery to the heart of Arrowtown for an exhibition of his work called Surrounding Visions. Ben started his artist’s practice early, from the age of 6 studying Chinese traditional art under his father in Guangzhou. Later he expanded his studies to include Western art and in 1988 he moved to New Zealand pursue this interest. After a stint in Auckland Ben moved south and set up his own successful art gallery and studio in Robins Road. He has exhibited internationally and his work, which hangs in private and corporate collections all over the world, has won many awards. He has
continued to study Western art, and he says he has expanded his work to achieve a stronger link with spiritual and technical aspects, enabling him to achieve new heights in his art career. Ben believes that this exhibition stands as the pinnacle of his studies in both the Western and Eastern culture. He says that he hopes that the artwork in this exhibition portrays his vision to create a connection between the artwork and the viewer. Surrounding Visions will be at the Lakes District Museum gallery from Friday 3 February to Sunday 12 March. The museum is open 8.30 am to 5 pm every day.

busy fire season If you think the fire brigade siren has been going off a lot lately, you’d be right. The brigade has been having a hectic time of it, particularly with rural fires. The Wakatipu Voluntary Rural Fire Force, which runs out of the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, was heavily involved in the recent fire at Rat Point, between Queenstown and Glenorchy – hence the three siren activations in one night last week. Arrowtown crews were involved right from the start, working in an overnight and a daytime shift, with the last ones leaving nearly 24 hours later. Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Jamie Cowan of the Otago Rural Fire Authority, who was incident controller, says that the WVRFF is reaching its full capability as a rural fire force now that it is set up with water tanker and a ‘smokechaser’ rural fire appliance. Murray Forward, who is chief fire officer of both the AVFB and the WVRFF, was sector supervisor at Rat Point, overseeing a mixed crew of volunteers from Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Kingston as well as contract rural firefighters. Just a few days after the Rat Point fire the WVRFF was called out again to a fire near Matakauri Lodge, reinforcing the high fire danger at the moment. Jamie points out that it is currently a restricted fire season, meaning that you must not light a fire in the open without a permit from the Otago Rural Fire Authority. olive leaf update There have been some changes to the status of the community building proposed to go next to the church in Hertford St. In November the Olive Leaf Centre Trust withdrew the resource consent application for the building and in December they had pre-application meetings with both the QLDC planners and the Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group. It is expected that the Trust will resubmit the application with adjustments that grew out of those meetings. 9

½ cup honey 2 tbsp canola oil 3 cups rolled oats ¼ cup sunflower seeds ½ cup slivered almonds ¼ cup hazelnuts, chopped ½ cup dessicated coconut ¼ cup pumpkin seeds ½ cup dried apricots, chopped ½ cup sultanas Preheat oven to 180°C. Cover 2 baking trays with baking paper and set aside. In a small saucepan, add honey and canola oil. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes. In a large bowl combine all the oats, seeds, nuts and coconut. Pour the honey and oil mixture in and stir to coat. Pour onto the lined trays and bake for 15 minutes. Stir every 3-4 minutes.
