christmas church services Arrowtown’s three historic churches have things well covered when it comes to Christmas services, and locals and holiday makers alike are warmly invited to join the three congregations in their celebrations. St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hertford St, has a Christmas Eve vigil at 10 pm, and a Christmas Day service at 10 am. St Paul’s Anglican Church, Berkshire St, has holy communion and carols at 8.30 pm on Christmas Eve, and 8 am and 9.30 am on Christmas Day. St John’s Presbyterian Church, Durham St, has carols by candlelight at 11.15 pm on Christmas Eve, and a family service at 9 am on Christmas Day.
a & p show The Lake Hayes A & P Show is sure to be a hit with the whole family with something for everyone. This year the show has Clydesdales, mini horses and bareback riding to go with the usual equestrian events in the show ring. The wood choppers make a welcome return and Remarkable Theatre will be entertaining the kids with a taste of ‘oh no it’s not, oh yes it is’ action from Panto in the Park. Jonathan Usher will perform his magic and some very talented young locals will provide music to chill out to. With plenty of delicious food, arts and crafts, and trade stalls on top of the traditional farm events, there is certainly lots to see and do. There are also ways for both kids and adults to get involved – you could make something for one of over a dozen categories the home industries section, show your pet or dress for success in Fashion in the Field, to name just a few. The Lake Hayes A & P Show, held at the Lake Hayes showgrounds on State Highway 6 on Saturday 14 January 2017, costs only $10 for adults, and school-age children are free. Parking for show-goers will be a breeze, with a free parkand-ride option from up Alec Robins Road (the other side of the highway from the showgrounds). The Post Office’s annual market day will take place on Sunday 27 December, when throngs of locals and visitors will make their way around dozens of stalls on the Library Green selling local arts and crafts, food, plants and much more. The event is a fund raiser for the Arrowtown Post Office, which was bought by the community from New Zealand Post in 1991. Proceeds will go towards maintaining the historic building and its gardens. Rita Teele hopes that you are getting lots of stamped letters, cards and parcels this Christmas. She asks that you save your stamps and drop them off at the Arrowtown Post Office (they can be left on envelopes, or corners of envelopes). The used stamps will be sold to visitors as souvenirs and the money also goes into the maintenance fund. ‘Thank you to all past, current, and future contributors,’ Rita says, ‘and Happy Holidays!’

pump track complete It’s taken over two years and a huge amount of work, but Arrowtown’s pump track is now open for summer. When Vicky Jenkins from Arrow Bikes decided to see if she could organise a pump track for local kids, she had no idea how much would be involved. There was all the site selection, design and consents to worry about, and then there was the small matter of raising $40,000 to build it. It wasn’t an easy or quick task but Vicky pushed on, applying for funding from trusts and local businesses. QLDC cleared the area of trees at no cost to get things started. ‘Without the community getting together, it wouldn’t have happened,’ says Vicky. She estimates it will cost $2500 per year to maintain the track, but even with the first year covered, fund raising will begin again next year. ‘The next step would be to tarseal the track, which will bring the maintenance cost right down.’ The official opening took place last Friday morning. Councillor Scott Stevens commended Vicky and the community on their efforts, then cut the ribbon to let loose a small group of local kids to ride the track for the first time. 750 g frozen or fresh berries 1 packet raspberry jelly 1 packet blackberry jelly 600 ml readymade custard packet of large sponge cake, cut into squares 400 g whipped cream 200 g fresh raspberries Arrange half the berry fruit in two shallow dishes. Make up the two packets of jelly using half the amount of boiling water in packet instructions. Pour over the fruit and allow to set. In a glass dish layer the custard, berries and sponge cake and jelly, finishing with custard. Top with whipped cream and garnish with raspberries.
