long lunch The sun came out just in time for Arrowtown’s annual Long Lunch last week. The event sold out four weeks in advance, but some restaurants put on extra tables, bringing the number of people served to a record-breaking 540. This year’s official charity was the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, who supplied crews to set up and put away the tables, chairs and umbrellas. Diners were in a generous mood and dropped a little over $1500 in the buckets for the brigade to buy CPR training mannequins and other medical equipment.
water chlorination QLDC has announced it will chlorinate Arrowtown’s water this summer to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The plan is to chlorinate from mid-December until the end of March 2017 – and it’s possible the chlorination may become permanent. After more than 5000 people became sick with waterborne gastrointestinal illness in Havelock North earlier this year, QLDC decided to bring in temporary measures for summer, when visitor numbers are at their highest and the depleted water supplies are more vulnerable to contamination. A UV treatment system was installed in Arrowtown in 2014 but that has not completely halted contamination, and Public Health South’s Dr Derek Bell says chlorination is the responsible step. ‘Chlorine provides one of the most effective ways of treating water because it disinfects the water all the way from the source through to homes and businesses.’ While a decision has yet to be made on permanent chlorination, this is something the council is seriously considering. Chief Executive Mike Theelen says QLDC is obliged to learn from the Havelock North experience. ‘An event of that magnitude in the Queenstown Lakes District would be very damaging on a local level, in terms of the effects to residents, but also seriously damaging to the region’s tourism sector.’ 3

In late November at the bowling club the Arrowtown Returned and Services Association held a Christmas dinner for members, including our only local returned serviceman Allan Fisher (91) plus the widows of returned servicemen. RSA president Lindsay Stirling tells us that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event, with the meal courtesy of Mann Made Catering and music from Colin MacNicol and Winston Wallace. 9
your flop-free recipe tuna and cashew rice salad
2 cups brown rice 1 Tbsp peanut oil 100 g cashew nuts 600 g tuna, drained 2 red capsicums, finely diced 2 tomatoes, deseeded and diced 3 Tbsp soy sauce juice of 2 lemons 2 tsp brown sugar ½ cup fresh mint Cook rice in boiling salted water until tender, rinse under cold water then drain and set aside. Heat oil and lightly toast cashews, let cool. In a large bowl put the tinned tuna, red capsicums and tomatoes. Gently combine all the salad ingredients with n the soy sauce, lemon juice, sugar and r mint. Serve with lemon wedges.
