school fair a smash hit
cracker arrowtown performers Arrowtown is well represented in this year’s Shotover Jet Christmas Cracker, a magical theatrical experience for families that draws on the traditions of pantomime. Nine Arrowtowners will be on stage, with four seasoned performers in speaking roles – school students Ollie McLean as an Icelandic boy and Kane Viggers as Dog, singer Charlotte Graf as Mrs. Claus, and Ollie’s mum Nicole McLean, star of Showbiz Queenstown’s Chicago, as Farmer Jo. Tickets for the December 4 event are available from Eventfinda.
Arrowtown Primary School had a record-breaking year for the bi-annual school fair, organising committee member Euni Borrie reports. Funds raised exceeded all expectations, smashing the $40,000 target to reach $51,000. ‘It was amazing,’ says Euni, ‘and all down to the school working together as a team.’ After a damp and overcast start to the day the clouds disappeared in time for the auction of items donated by over 100 businesses and this raised more than $14,000. The proceeds from food stalls run by local restaurants and caterers alone amounted to $11,000. The sales stalls did a roaring trade and there was plenty of entertainment for all the family. The kids danced in the sun as former Verlaine Paul Winders, day-time school sports coordinator and after hours musician, sang some of their favourite songs. It takes a small army to make a big event like this possible and we can’t list everyone by name, but Euni highlights the organising committee led by Tami Harris, teachers, parents, volunteers, the school business community and the kapa haka group. The money raised will no doubt come in handy as the school enters a growth stage with the recently announced $11 million redevelopment of the school buildings over the next three years and a growth in capacity from 590 to 700 on the cards. 3

your flop-free recipe jalapeno poppers
½ cup cream cheese ½ cup grated sharp hard cheese 12 jalapeno peppers, halved lengthwise, seeds and membranes removed 12 slices streaky bacon Preheat oven to 200ºC. Mix cream cheese and hard cheese together until evenly blended. Fill each jalapeno half with cheese mixture. Put halves back together and wrap each with a slice of bacon. Use a toothpick to hold bacon in place. Arrange bacon-wrapped peppers on baking sheet lined with foil. Bake until bacon is crispy, about 15 minutes.
