fireworks boom The Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade once again put on the only Guy Fawkes fireworks show in the Wakatipu. This year saw a change in venue to Wilcox Green, a move that Chief Fire Officer Murray Forward says was a success. ‘It’s easier to walk there, and a lot of people did. I got plenty of positive feedback too about how the backdrop of the black hills and the sound echoing made the fireworks more dramatic.’ Murray says local businesses pledged over $1500 to buy fireworks, in addition to the money put in by brigade members. eco centre for arrowtown? The Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association is hoping to bring the community along on a project to build an environmental centre next to Bush Creek. The APBA says the centre will be a gateway to the Mahu Whenua covenanted land between Arrowtown and Lake Wanaka, improving access, telling the story of the land and driving the local economy. APBA project co-ordinator Sue Patterson says the first stage is the establishment of an unmanned 9 to 5 interpretation centre in the historic police hut on Butler Green. Due to open early in 2017, this will be an interim measure until the larger eco centre is built on land near Bush Creek just beyond the Chinese Village. A feasibility study will determine the viability of the full eco centre, which the APBA is proposing will comprise an information centre and museum, education space and accommodation for 40 people. The proposal had its first public outing on Tuesday at a presentation of concepts by Year 3 Auckland University School of Architecture Cara Allen, Oscar Clarke, Keish students. After a site visit in which they explored the landscape and traditional built forms in Arrowtown, the students spent 12 weeks developing concepts, making drawings and building models. Sue explains that the design exercise is more hypothetical than practical at this point. ‘But there is definitely an opportunity here for the students to contribute to the future shape of any eco centre.’ 3
big derby turnout The GJ Gardner Homes Arrowtown Trolley Derby was blessed for a change with sunshine, making life easier for the drivers and bringing out the crowds to watch the action. Organiser Anton Schmitz says the turnout of 16 trolleys was impressive. ‘Some super work had been done this year. The standout was Todd Sutherland of TSEngineering’s Shout trolley. It was a really beautiful cart and fast too.’ Wanaka had a big presence this year with the youngest entrant (Sam Johnson, 12) and the winner (Jody Blatchley) both

school fair this weekend Arrowtown School is inviting the whole community to join them for their bi-annual fair this Saturday. All the old favourites will be there like bouncy castles, baking, chocolate wheels and dunk the teacher, while a kids’ beauty bar and photobooth add a modern flavour. The St John rescue helicopter will also be on site. Organiser Tami Harris says, ‘There is something for everyone. We have gourmet food provided by Slow Cuts, Neat Meat and Cargo Kitchen, lots of yummy treats, and Christmas-themed crafts made by the kids.’ Tami says the new Arrowtown School tea towels designed by local graphic designers will be

your flop-free recipe spring salad
500 g new potatoes, sliced in four extra virgin olive oil for drizzling flaky sea salt For the dressing: ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup white balsamic vinegar 2 heaped Tbsp natural yoghurt 1 heaped Tbsp dijon mustard To serve: 3–4 large handfuls baby rocket ½ cup toasted nuts, crushed Preheat the oven to 180°C. Simmer potatoes in water until tender, about 10–15 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large baking dish. Drizzle well with extra virgin olive oil, then sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Roast until golden, about 20 minutes. Allow to cool. Whisk together the dressing ingredients, seasoning with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Gently toss the rocket leaves with the potatoes, then pile on to a serving platter. Drizzle the dressing and sprinkle with roasted crushed nuts. 10
