trick or treat Arrowtown kids can get some practice in for Halloween with Trick or Treat, an afternoon of gross stunts, mindblowing magic and spooky circus skills at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 29 October. With Lizzie and the Ladderman, you can expect riotous fun, magical marvels and a chance to get on stage. This show is suitable for children age 5 and over, and there will be prizes for the scariest costume. Tickets are $10 (adults) and $5 (children) plus booking fees through eventfinda. co.nz. The show starts at 2 pm, with children’s facepainting from 1 pm.
circus of horrors The Athenaeum Hall will be transformed into the freakiest cabaret ever on Saturday 29 October as Lizzie Tollemache and David Ladderman perform some of carny folklore’s most notorious stunts. From the (relative) safety of your table, you’ll witness spine-chilling sideshow with a nail-biting and naughty performance that melds Houdini, Ripley’s Believe It or Not and, you know, those guys from The Prestige. Lizzie and David are guaranteed to put on a great show. These Christchurch actors, circus artists and variety entertainers have performed at over 50 festivals and won numerous awards, including the the World Buskers Festival’s prestigious critics’ choice award. Creative Queenstown were so impressed by the talented duo in Mr & Mrs Alexander, a play featuring Victorian magic and sideshow stunts, mentalism and psychic illusion, that they have brought them back to the Wakatipu for a second time in less than a year. Janey Labes says Creative Queenstown are going the extra mile for this production. ‘We are putting a lot into making it a really excellent show, especially with our tech and decorations. It will be a fun night!’ Seating is arranged in tables of 6. There will be a cash bar to help you face the horrors on stage and food available (that’s if the stunts don’t put you off eating). After the show ends there will be more entertainment. Circus of Horrors - A Halloween Cabaret starts at 8.30 pm on Saturday 29 October and is strictly R18. jazz fest in town The Queenstown Jazz Festival will be back in Arrowtown for one day only, with several cafés and bars hosting jazz groups from 10 am to 10 pm on Sunday 23 October. You can also enjoy the jazz day by strolling along to Buckingham Green at noon to hear the Edwina Thorne Photo by Geoff Patterson Quartet perform a free concert of jazz favourites and cool sophisticated latin and dance tunes guaranteed to get the toes tapping. A trumpet virtuoso and vocalist, Edwina is accompanied by double bass player Aaron Cordal, jazz guitar player Andrew Smith and Miguel Fuentes on drums. The performances range from jazz, blues, rock, folk/acoustic/country and pop/dance to latin, including crossover numbers such as ‘Moondance’, ‘Hotel California’ and ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’, where Edwina soars on the flugelhorn. czech film festival Have you noticed there are more and more Czech people moving to the Wakatipu? Well here’s your chance to get to know a little bit more about your new neighbours’ culture, history and lifestyle. The first ever Czech Film Festival, organised by the Czech honorary consul in Queenstown Vladka Kennett, is currently showcasing some of the finest films to come out of the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia) in the last 30 years. The festival, which is on daily at Dorothy Browns until Sunday 16 October, covers a wide range of genres from period drama to mockumentary. You can see the full programme at czechffqueenstown.nz.

pump track under way After years of planning and fundraising, work on constructing the new Arrowtown pump track near the skate park has begun. The loop of rollers and berms will provide a fun way to sharpen bike handling skills as riders propel themselves through the track by shifting Simon, Glen & Wolfgane from Green their body weight rather than Fingers with Vicky from Arrow Bikes having to pedal. Green Fingers have been contracted to build the track, which involves layering various grades of aggregate and WPS soil stabiliser provided by Hazard Brothers. Vicky Jenkins of Arrow Bikes, the driving force behind the track, hopes to have the official opening within six weeks, but says this is dependent on construction going without a hitch. Keep an eye on the loop arrowtown for updates!

spicy thai noodle bowls

200 g rice stick noodles 2 Tbsp peanut oil 3 chicken breast fillets, sliced 2 red chillis, seeded and chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 4 spring onions, finely chopped 2 Tbsp fish sauce 2 Tbsp tamarind concentrate or rice vinegar 2 cups bean sprouts 4 fried tofu puffs (optional), quartered ¼ cup roasted peanuts, chopped ½ cup chopped coriander fried shallots & lime wedges, to serve

Place the noodles in a large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Stand for 5 minutes, then drain and set aside. Heat oil in a wok over high heat, add the chicken, chillis and garlic and stir-fry for 3 minutes. Add the noodles, spring onions, fish sauce, tamarind or vinegar and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Add the sprouts, tofu (optional), peanuts and coriander. Stir-fry until well combined. Serve immediately topped with fried shallots and lime wedges.
