laughter and music The Athenaeum Hall will be a performing arts fan’s paradise next week, with two top-flight touring productions on consecutive nights. First up, on Thursday 22 September, is Under the Same Moon, written by Renee Liang and brought to Arrowtown by Creative Queenstown and Arts on Tour New Zealand. In this comedy about daughters and their wayward mothers, a Hong Kong matriarch is invited to New Zealand for her granddaughter’s wedding. Well, not exactly invited. Her surprise arrival, thousand-year-old eggs and all, throws more than a few spanners in the works. Under the Same Moon had sellout seasons in Auckland and Wellington before starting on this national tour. It has been well received by audiences and critics, with Metro magazine saying: ‘Porpor, inspired by Liang’s “feisty” grandmothers, is a delightful creation.’ If the star of this one-woman show, Hweiling Ow, seems familiar, it may be because she has performed in these parts before, playing multiple characters in Carl Nixon’s hit comedy Two Fish ‘n’ a Scoop at the Queenstown Memorial Centre in 2012. The following night, Friday 23 September, the play set will have been packed away and replaced by an intimate, candle-lit salon setting for Hammers and Horsehair, another Creative Queenstown event. The audience will be transported back in time as pianist Douglas Mews and cellist Robert Ibell play a programme of early 19th century virtuosic works on instruments that date from around the period when the pieces were written. ‘We’re looking to create a special atmosphere,’ says Douglas. ‘The candles are part of that, but we’ll also be chatting with the audience as if we were playing in their sitting room at home. The old instruments and playing style are key aspects of it too. People will be able to hear the music much as it would have been heard by audiences when it was written two hundred years ago.’ Under the Same Moon is at the Athenaeum on Thursday 22 September at 7.30 pm. Tickets are $24 (adults) and $14 (children) plus booking fee from www.eventfinda.co.nz. Hammers and Horsehair is the following night at the same time. councillor comment This update on local government matters from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: Not long to go now until your ballot forms for the local body elections arrive. I have been fortunate enough to be re-elected unopposed, but there are still some very important choices for the people of Arrowtown. Who is going to be our mayor for the next three years? Those who attended the Arrowtown Village Association ‘Meet the Candidates’ night on Monday would have a better idea of who to vote for after all five mayoral contenders fronted to the local community. We are certainly spoilt for choice with quality candidates to choose from. I can confidently say that whoever is elected will do an excellent job for the ratepayers of this district. Don’t forget to vote! We also have the opportunity to vote for candidates on the Otago Regional Council. In my opinion it is about time we had a representative from the Queenstown Lakes. The ORC plays a significant role in Arrowtown with responsibilities for environmental services such as air pollution, the water quality of Lake Hayes and Arrow River, and wilding trees. Maggie Lawton is a candidate from Wanaka with a background in science who gets my vote for the ORC and can hopefully direct some attention towards our environmental problems. 4

tourism surging Arrowtown is experiencing a tourism boom, with the village now receiving 650,000 visitors a year – up from 400,000 three years ago. According to the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association’s latest Visitor Research Report, 70% of the visitors are from overseas – up from 2013 when it was a 50:50 split with internal Kiwi travellers. APBA board member John Lapsley says that having 450,000 visitors from overseas has lowered the average age of tourists. ‘The strong growth in the younger adults market has also seen startling levels of participation in Arrowtown’s nature activities like walking and cycling,’ he says. Visitors are staying longer too. In 2013, 43% of visitors stayed less than two hours. ‘That was a big problem…The very short visits number is now down to only 14%, so we are well pleased,’ says John. He credits improved tourist information and the development of the trails network for this. Visitors gave Arrowtown a 9.2 out of 10 satisfaction rating. APBA also conducted a survey of Chinese visitors that showed the under 40s market was strongest, and the biggest visitor category was family groups of 3 to 5 people, often Mainland Chinese taking a local holiday with New Zealand based family. Interestingly, 78% of the Chinese tourists had no, or limited, understanding of English.

quilting crazy The Queenstown Patchwork & Quilters Group, recently nominated for the Trustpower Community Awards, is offering a weekend of ‘sewing madness’ to anyone in the Wakatipu Basin who shares their love of sewing and creativity. ‘This is a chance to bring along your own project or join in with some of our ladies who will be working on charity quilts over the weekend,’ says organiser Robyn Bitcheno. ‘We hope to complete two or three quilts to be given to the Cancer Society in Queenstown.’ The workshop, which is sponsored by QLDC, runs from 1 to 2 October at the Lake Hayes Pavilion. The cost of $30 for one day or $50 for two days includes lunch, as well as morning and afternoon tea.
