jaimie cooks her way to victory Once again Arrowtown’s Jaimie Stodler has used her cooking skills to take her places. The runner-up (with fellow Arrowtowner Bec Stanley) of MasterChef 2014 is heading to Sri Lanka soon after beating out some of New Zealand’s top hotels and restaurants to win the Dilmah High Tea competition at the NZ Chefs National Salon. Jaimie, owner of Cup & Cake, and her German-born pastry chef Josie Geimecke created a winning menu that included such exotic and complicated dishes as a pâteà-choux swan filled with Dilmah Italian Almond Tea infused crème pâtissière, a piece of raw ‘cheesecake’ topped with almond tea pearls and spiced pinot noir cherry pearls, served with a green tea kombucha shot. As part of their prize Jaimie and Josie will attend the Dilmah School of Tea in Sri Lanka and help mentor students at the MJF Charitable Foundation’s culinary training centre. The recently opened centre will take students from tea plantation families, those injured in the country’s civil war or people who live with disability. Graduates are expected to find work at Sri Lanka’s top international hotels. ‘I am really into tea,’ says Jaimie, ‘so winning this competition and having the honour of travelling to Sri Lanka, the home of tea, is a dream come true for me.’ But there’s much more to it than a free holiday. ‘While Josie and I both love to travel, we are focused on what we can learn and share as chefs during our visit to Sri Lanka.’

scientists of the future The budding scientists of Arrowtown Primary School are getting fully involved in the upcoming Fast Forward Science Week at Wakatipu High School. This schools event is part of the Catalyst Trust’s inSight, a five-day festival of science, technology and innovation that runs from 29 August to 2 September. Year 7 teacher Alice Denley says that the school wanted all the kids to be contributing to Fast Forward. ‘Students were given the option of completing a Science Fair project or a Future Queenstown poster.’ About 30 Year 7 and 8 students, working in pairs or small groups, have Science Fair projects. Topics include how quickly paracetamol is absorbed in the stomach, the effects of caffeine on heart rates, and which materials make the best hot-air balloon. ‘The rest of our Year 7s and 8s are working on a Future Queenstown Poster,’ says Alice. ‘They brainstormed challenges Queenstown is facing and possible solutions for the future.’ Key areas they are investigating are transport, housing, insulation, health infrastructure, education, tourism, climate change and waste management. The students’ work will be on display at a public open day at Wakatipu High School on Thursday 1 September. Go along and check it out to see the culmination of months of work by students from all over the Wakatipu – and look out for the next Ernest Rutherford, William Pickering or Joan Dingley!

weaving wananga Arrowtown school was a hive of activity recently as a group of would-be korowai weavers soaked up new skills from craftworker Robin Hill. Robin, who learnt how to weave the traditional Maori cloaks at Papakura Marae, first passed on her knowledge of how to prepare feathers, the basic stitch and how to cast on. Then the group moved on to complete the feather kaupapa of the korowai, the tÄ niko, turnover and mawhitiwhiti finishing. By the end of the weekend participants had learnt a great deal, had a lot of fun – and were able to take home their own small korowai. The workshop was organised by Southern REAP, who run a range of low-cost educational courses in the Wakatipu (see southernreap.co.nz). 5

stevens re-elected Just as the other council election candidates are gearing up for their campaigns, Arrowtown’s Scott Stevens is able to sit back, relax and concentrate on his council work after he was reelected as Arrowtown’s councillor unopposed. Scott doesn’t see the lack of a contested campaign as a entirely good thing. ‘It robs Arrowtowners of a councillor vote and the chance to question me on important Arrowtown issues…I will need to work extra hard to make myself available to ratepayers so they can ask questions and get value out of their representative to council.’ He says he is looking forward to continuing the good relationships with the APBA, AVA and council staff that he developed during his first term. ‘My main goal is to present a united voice for Arrowtown and have a clear pathway forward for the village. I’m also excited about working with a new mayor – there are some quality candidates we must choose between.’ Arrowtown residents and ratepayers will have just one vote in the QLDC elections on 8 October 2016. They will have the opportunity to help pick the new mayor from a list of five candidates. 8

your flop-free recipe beef stroganoff 400 g Quality Mark beef rump 1 tsp paprika zest of 1 lemon 2 tablespoons oil 1 red onion, finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 250 g mushrooms, wiped and sliced, if large ½ cup beef stock ½ cup crème fraiche Cut beef into 5 cm x 1 cm strips, toss in the paprika and lemon zest and set aside. Heat oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and add the beef rump strips and cook quickly on both sides. Remove from the pan onto a plate. Reduce heat to low and add onion and garlic and cook until the onion is soft. Increase heat to medium and add the mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms are lightly golden. Pour in the stock and cook until hot, then return rump strips to pan briefly - no more than one minute. Season and stir the crème fraiche through.
