the loop 100 today! This issue we’re marking the 100th edition of the loop arrowtown with a special cover competition with Arrowtown Primary School and a series of 100-themed articles. I am so proud of how well and how long the loop arrowtown has gone. Four years ago when I decided to start an Arrowtown publication I was warned that many had tried and failed and some people didn’t think it would last. But this made me even more determined to make it work and here we are 100 issues later! It has been so enjoyable putting the loop together every fortnight. A big thank you to my writer/editor Alison Dench who puts the articles together every fortnight: the loop would not be the same without you. I love it when locals send me their unique stories, which makes the loop personal to our community. Different readers love the loop for different reasons - be it the positive stories, to get the recipe or to check out the #theloopsnaps pics. Some just want to keep up with events on in town and for a small town there is always something happening. Readers tell me they look forward to every issue and I’m sure to get a call on the odd occasion it doesn’t appear in their letterbox on time. My aim for the loop arrowtown was to provide a great, reasonably priced advertising platform for local businesses. Without all our fantastic advertisers the loop would not be what it is today, so thank you so much for all your support! This is a community publication. Dudley’s Cottage, down by Butler Green, Dudley’s Cottage is open 10 am–4 pm during winter. ‘If you haven’t been down to check us out then you are missing out,’ says manager Allie Blair-Hourston. ‘Not only do we have amazing coffee, we also offer fresh date and savoury scones, slices, baked potatoes, our famous steamed dumplings and much more.’
Dudley’s is a great spot for winter, with plenty of indoor seating and a roaring fire. In addition to the café, there is an extensive range of gifts, including babyware, jewellery, homewares, skincare and art. ‘All our products are New Zealand made, and we stock products from some of New Zealand’s top designers,’ says Allie. ‘We also have our goldpanning operation here on site, so bring the kids down for a goldpanning lesson and relax in one of Arrowtown’s best hideaways. Tucked away by the historic Chinese settlement, Dudley’s Cottage is actually two cottages. The first was built in about 1880 by William Butler, an Irishman who was one of the first to arrive at the Arrow for the 1862 gold rush. It is one of the oldest stone cottages in Arrowtown and possibly in the Wakatipu. The site was strategic – it was the last building on Buckingham Street before miners headed up the Arrow River to Macetown, the perfect location for a supplies store.

100 years of rsa Taylor Reed, honorary secretary of the Arrowtown RSA, writes: The Returned and Services Association, formed in New Zealand on 28 April 1916, recently celebrated its 100th birthday. Three years later, an advertisement in the Lake County Press called all returned soldiers to a meeting with Lt-Col Colquhoun, the organiser for Otago, to discuss an Arrowtown branch. The 31 men present decided to create a subassociation of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association and the first general meeting of the Arrowtown RSA took place on 8 September 1919. In 1923 the Arrowtown RSA unveiled its Great War memorial. After World War II the association made the most of Government subsidies to build usable monuments to commemorate the war dead. Arrowtown chose a swimming baths and they were handed over to the council free of debt on in 1957. In recent years the parent body has done away with the service qualification, a move that has saved many smaller country associations like ours from going into recess. Our membership has doubled in the last 6 years and stands at 53. In 2013 the Arrowtown executive decided to break away from Dunedin and become an incorporated society. This move has been very positive and today we are a strong body dealing direct with the head office of the RNZRSA in Wellington. (My thanks to Rupert Iles for background information.)

one hundred years ago… A century ago in July 1916, Arrowtown got its news not from the loop arrowtown but from the Lake County Press. News reports at the time show our town was a busy place. In 1916 many of the town’s sons were off fighting in Europe, and almost exactly 100 years ago locals received the sad news that Samuel McSkimming, former member of the Arrow Brass Band, had died of wounds in France. After the gold rush, farming became Arrowtown’s main source of income, with lots of small businesses servicing the farmers. The newspaper reported that the Lake County dairy factory had made 31 tons of cheese but the potato crops had been ‘an absolute failure’. There was a shortage of coal and a local syndicate was ready to buy the Gibbston coal-pit. Despite having less than 450 residents, Arrowtown had a borough council (Miss May Cotter had just announced that she was standing down as town clerk). There was a hospital, but it had only a handful of patients. Arrowtown also had its own courthouse that dealt with minor infractions like Arthur Barnett’s failing to close at 6 pm. More serious matters were dealt with in Queenstown, such as the landlord of the Ballarat Hotel illegally supplying liquor to a number of familiar Arrowtown names - William Reid, Robert Butel, Stewart Stevenson, Charles Wilson and D and L Callaghan. But perhaps the biggest excitement of winter 100 years ago was the appearance of The Great Henri French in a vaudeville show at the Athenaeum Hall. His promotional material promised that he would enter the stage upon a velocipede and perform tricks of juggling and sleight of hand. ‘The Intoxicated Genius is by no means a misnomer, for under the influence of the bottle he performs many tricks quite unknown to professional skaters.’ Sounds like quite a show! 12
