autumn festival parade This year’s parade, blessed as ever with beautiful Autumn sunshine, was a bumper one. Over 40 floats and dozens of classic cars made their way down Buckingham Street in front of a crowd of thousands. Parade organiser Carole Watts says the high number of entries came after they approached a lot of community groups, businesses and schools to participate. ‘They all put a huge effort into their floats!’ Wakatipu Garden Club’s flower-covered convertible won the Best Community Float award. The new Autumn Fairies were a popular innovation this year, giving away lollies and all sorts of vouchers.

big rugby clash The Arrowtown Bulls take on Maniototo – the Maggots – at 2.30 pm on Saturday 30 April at the Queenstown Events Centre. The Bulls are 4 from 5 with good recent wins after a second-round loss to Cromwell. Maniototo have a 100% record, but with former All Black Andrew Hore and ex Highlander Charlie Hore coaching and playing it’s easy to see why. Arrowtown coach Richie Anderson says the Bulls will be at full strength for the game. ‘Stand-out players run from number 1 to 22,’ he says. ‘Go the Bulls!’
rickshaw girls on a roll! Local hairdresser Stacy Mctaggart and former flatmate Jendi Paterson have made it safely home after an action-packed adventure on the Rickshaw Run through northern India from the desert of Jaisalmer to the tea country of Shillong. The girls were first of the teams to finish, getting there even before the finish line was set up. They returned full of travellers’ tales of staying in palaces and hovels and of sunset at the Taj Mahal. ‘It was everything from amazing to terrifying,’ says Stacy. At one point they were held up machete-wielding female bandits. They paid them off but then Steve – their customised rickshaw – stalled as they made their escape. Stacy and Jendi have raised $1000 for Cool Earth and around $2500 for Queenstown’s Rehabilitation & Disabilities Services so far and their givealittle donation page (search for Team Arrowtown) is still open. Stacy says she would absolutely do a charity race like this again, although she says they were lucky that, bandits aside, they had a cruisy run and Steve didn’t break down like other contestants’ rickshaws. Next time, she admits, it might be a different story!

Get yourself to Dorothy Browns to watch 20 top-notch movies you wouldn’t otherwise get to see on the big screen. New society president Alison Dench is mystified why the society has only a handful of Arrowtown members. ‘I can’t explain it. People come from Queenstown, from Jack’s Point, even from Cromwell to see our films and enjoy the social side as well.’ Perhaps the 2016 movie line-up will persuade them. It includes classic foodie films Babette’s Feast, Eat Drink Man Woman and Spinning Plates. Other highlights are silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari; and Israeli

condensed festival a hit The Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival committee is breathing a sigh of relief and satisfaction after the newly shortened festival turned out to be a huge success. Chair Pam Hulls says the community came together to give it a good festival vibe. ‘There was real enjoyment around town,’ she says. Festival coordinator Pip Norton also credits the buskers and street performers with creating a great atmosphere. Numbers were up across the board. The market day and parade attracted record crowds despite the initially gloomy weather. The Pie, Pint & Pinot event sold out by 1.30 pm, with 1000 people sampling craft beers, gourmet pies and Akarua wine – up from about 600 last year. And around 200 people attended the Denim & Diamonds party sponsored by Mann Made Catering and in association with LA Social Club,

which party organiser Ngaire Barrett confirms was ‘a rocking night’. Interest in the goldpanning championships was up, and huge crowds attended the Anzac Day commemorations. Pam is quick to acknowledge the importance of contribution of locals. ‘I’d like to thank all the volunteers for helping to put this community festival together. They stepped up big time!’

your flop-free recipe gluten-free gooey caramel anzac slice
base 1½ cups gluten-free self-raising flour ½ cup Chelsea Soft Brown Sugar 140 g butter, melted caramel 395 g can condensed milk 2 Tbsp Chelsea Golden Syrup 50 g butter topping ½ cup gluten-free shredded coconut 1 cup gluten-free muesli (without dried fruit) ½ cup Chelsea Soft Brown Sugar 60 g butter, melted Pre-heat oven to 175°C. Line the base of a slice tin with baking paper. Base – Combine the flour and brown sugar in a bowl. Next add the melted butter and mix well. Press mixture evenly into the tin to form a base. Bake for 10–12 minutes until pale golden and just set. Caramel – Pour the condensed milk, golden syrup and butter into a pot and heat over a medium heat on the stove. Stir until golden and thickened. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes while making the topping. Topping – Combine coconut, cereal, brown sugar and butter and stir well. Pour the caramel over the slice base and carefully spread over topping mixture, pressing into the caramel lightly. Bake the slice for a further 10–15 minutes until golden and bubbling.
