gibbston wine & food The SkyCity Gibbston Wine & Food Festival is preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary this Saturday in Queenstown Gardens. Originally called the Gibbston Harvest Festival and held within the Gibbston valley, its move to town three years ago has opened it up to many more visitors and there has been an increase in exhibitors. But the local element has been retained, says festival organiser Pip Norton. ‘We are firmly focused on Gibbston-based wineries and many of the food offerings are also closely associated with or based in Gibbston – it’s about showing the best of what we can do locally.’ For the first time this year a brewery and distillery will show their wares. The fun kicks off on Saturday 19 March at 10 am, running through until 6 pm. Visitors can taste delicious wines, match them up with real foodie offerings, or just find a spot under a tree and soak up the atmosphere. An anniversary cake will be cut by pioneering Gibbston winemaker Alan Brady at 1 pm. Wine masterclasses will be held by Gibbston Valley (1.30 pm), Brennan (2.30 pm) and Valli (3.30 pm). Entertainment will continue throughout the day, including music from Rock Formation and the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra. Tickets are $25 and include three tasting tokens and a souvenir glass. For non-drinkers, under 18s and sober drivers the event is free. ‘We’re looking forward to seeing as many locals as can make it along for the day,’ says Pip.

councillor comment Arrowtown ward councillor Scott Stevens with this update on Arrowtown goings-on: Happy autumn and what a magic time we have to look forward to around Arrowtown over the next 6 weeks. However, if you look up at the hills you’ll see the wilding pine problem that threatens to squeeze out the autumn colours. The responsibility to address this problem falls on our community. If we do nothing, Arrowtown will look very different in the future. Collaboration between landowners, the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA) and the Arrowtown Village Association (AVA) is under way to work on solutions. The Arrowtown Colours Group is in place and anyone with special skills to offer or comments to make should contact the AVA. While on the topic of the AVA, this is your community voice and keeps you informed. The AVA and I, as your councillor, work together on identifying issues QLDC can address to better service the village. The best way to communicate any concerns you have, or suggest improvements and additions to our facilities, is through the AVA. swim club round-up The Arrowtown Swim Club wrapped up another great summer season with races and a prizegiving on Friday 4 March. The evening started in the pool with the last of the ribbon nights, in which the kids tried to beat their own times set in previous ribbon nights - and if they did they earned a ribbon. But as ever the highlight of the year for the kids was the parents’ race, which saw club coach Wayne Boatwright take out the title. There was a barbecue at the pool and the trophies and certificates were handed out at the fire station. The coaches each received a small token of appreciation and certificates were given to Hera Winders and Connor McLeod for helping with the little kids. Some dedicated volunteers received a voucher from Cup & Cake. Club president Deborah Mcleod says, ‘This is an amazing community-run club and we couldn’t do it without the help of our volunteers. Thanks to all for helping to make the season fun.’

Twenty-seven Wakatipu High School art students are getting a rare chance to exhibit in a public gallery at the Lakes District Museum’s ‘Showing Off’ exhibition.
