golf welcome party The biggest party of the year – the Arrowtown Welcome Party hosted by the New Orleans Hotel – is about to happen and the good news is that absolutely everyone is invited. The celebrations marking the start of the BMW ISPS Handa New Zealand Open will take over Buckingham Street on the evening of Thursday 10 March. You’ll be able to buy food at stalls from the New Orleans Hotel, Slow Cuts, La Rumbla and Mantra to eat while you do some celebrityspotting and catch up with friends, and the New Orleans Hotel and the Fork & Tap can sell you beer or wine to quench your thirst. Bring the kids too: there will be facepainting, hula hoops, the balloon man and more at the children’s area sponsored by Arrowtown Four Square. Local performers will be highlighted throughout. The entertainment will kick off at 5.30 pm with the iconic Miners Band and Buckingham Belles. At the 6 pm official welcome, front and centre will be the Wakatipu Combined Kapa Haka group, specially formed from Arrowtown Primary School pupils and Kiwi Haka members. This new group has the approval of local iwi, who will be in attendance. After this the Wakatipu High School jazz band will perform, as will The Friends and Clone Radio with charitable trust Rockformation supplying the sound. At 9 pm the official after party starts at La Rumbla. The Arrowtown Welcome Party starts at 5.30 pm on Thursday 10 March in Buckingham Street. akarua arrowtown autumn festival Arrowtown’s annual celebration of the autumn colours has a new naming rights sponsor: Akarua, Central Otago’s largest family-owned winery. Managing director David Skeggs says the Autumn Festival is a prime example of the sort of regional event the Skeggs Group is looking to support. ‘Festivals such as this are essential not just for generating revenue for local businesses, but also demonstrate strengthened civic pride and a sense of community.’ The Autumn Festival, now in its 32nd year, is a traditional event for locals and visitors alike. Here’s a great way to use up those yummy tomatoes in the garden before Jack Frost arrives! 2 kg ripe tomatoes 6 onions, peeled and chopped 600 ml malt vinegar 500 g sugar 6 dried chillis 1½ Tbsp mustard powder 1 Tbsp curry powder 1 Tbsp salt Skin tomatoes by making a small cross on the smooth bottom with a sharp knife, then blanch in boiling water for abut 10 seconds, then plunge straight into iced water. Remove the core and roughly chop tomatoes. Place all ingredients in a large pot, bring to the boil then simmer for approximately 1 hour until thickened. Whilst hot, spoon into sterilised jars and turn upside down to create a good seal. 10
