ladies’ bike ride Arrowtown women, it’s time to dust the cobwebs off your bike and get out there on a free locals-only group ride to Gibbston Valley Winery, with transport back laid on. Organiser Adin May of Arrowtown Bike Hire is keen to see more women using our amazing trail network. ‘I just want to encourage them to get out there and ride with confidence.’ He’s doing everything he can to make things easy. No bike or broken bike? Arrowtown Bike Hire will lend you one of theirs at no cost. Worried you’re not fit enough? There will be bike transport to pick you up if you can’t make it all the way. Nobody to ride with? Here’s your chance to meet new people and find a riding buddy. The morning will start with tips to make you self-sufficient on the trail – things like how to fix a puncture or mend a broken chain. Then it’s onto the bikes with guide Cindy for the 12 km ride to the bungy bridge. From the bridge you can cycle on to Gibbston Valley or, if you’re out of puff, be transported there by road. At the winery there’ll be a complimentary glass of wine to reward you for your efforts, and 0-3yrs & 3-6yrs Hours 8 am-5.30 pm bike transport waiting to take you (optional sessions available) back to Arrowtown.

tree climbing champ Climbing trees is not just for kids. It’s an elite international event and Arrowtown has its own champion competitor in Stef White. Stef admits she only climbed trees ‘a wee bit’ when she was a child. She took up the sport in 2010 when she was a student arborist in Hamilton and has competed around New Zealand and overseas. In 2015 she edged out former world champion Nicky Ward-Allen to win the New Zealand nationals and this April she’s off to San Antonio, Texas, for the world champs. Stef says there’s more to it than getting up a tree as fast as you can. The five events in competitive tree climbing test the skills needed by a working arborist. ‘It’s about speed only for some events – mostly it’s technique, fluidity and safety,’ she says. New Zealand punches above its weight when it comes to tree climbing women. There are only half a dozen women – out of about 30 working in the field – currently competing here, but New Zealand has had four female world champions. Open every day for Stef is modest about her chances of adding to the list in San Antonio. ‘It would be a dream to finish top-three, but I’m aiming for from 8.30 am top-five.’ She also hopes to pick up new techniques that can share with her colleagues. In the meantime, Stef’s concentrating on physical conditioning with trainer Raych Bell at Millbrook. She’s also refining her skills up in the trees. This is a yummy summer dip, great for when reasonably priced avos are in. 2 ripe avocados ½ red onion, finely chopped 1–2 fresh chillis, finely chopped 2 Tbsp chopped fresh coriander 1 Tbsp lime or lemon juice ½ tsp coarse salt freshly ground black pepper ½ ripe tomato, deseeded and diced Scoop out the avo flesh and mash in a large bowl until fairly smooth. Add onion,chilli, coriander and citrus juice and mix well. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in tomato at the end for texture.
