bells in paradise The Christmas season can get frenetic, but Remarkable Vocals would like to at least start out the right way, with a summer afternoon of music. On 6 December the 16-strong choir, accompanied by pianist Alison Frude, will be performing a programme of traditional Christmas music, with a couple of secular pieces and some new John Rutter carols that haven’t been performed in the area before. Choral director Sue Patterson is particularly looking forward to the choir’s unaccompanied jazz version of the American classic, ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’. Local soprano Anna Morley will be a soloist for ‘Rejoice Greatly’ from Handel’s Messiah, and Sue herself will be singing a solo for Mozart’s ‘Laudate Dominum’. Remarkable Vocals’ Bells in Paradise Christmas concert will be at Thomas Brown’s Gallery on Sunday 6 December at 3 pm, with complimentary refreshments. Tickets are $25 for adults, available from the museum. School-age children are free.

Sometimes a whole-family adventure is fun, but my kids all enjoy different things and there are times a one-on-one adventure is called for. Now that the Arrow River is within fishing season, grab a bike, grab a fishing rod, grab a licence (www.fishandgame.org. nz) and head down to the river. A great day can be had stopping along the Arrow River Trail and trying to spot fish in the pools (with or without a rod!). Recently I have seen some good-sized fish under the Southern Discoveries bridge. And for those brave enough to climb down to the river at this point, you can either try your luck for a fish, enjoy the rope swing or just enjoy a picnic. Tight lines! 5

marathon efforts The sound of feet pounding the pavement and trails hit Arrowtown with a vengeance last Saturday morning as over 2000 runners set off from Millbrook, through the streets along the river to Hogans Gully at the start of the second Queenstown International Marathon. Last year’s shocking weather was not repeated and the athletes enjoyed near-perfect conditions. With 90% of entrants coming from outside the Queenstown Lakes District, accommodation providers were full and local businesses did a roaring trade over the weekend. 9

Over the winter a number of artists met in the community rooms to undertake life drawing, and the result of their work will be on display in the Lakes District Museum Gallery from 10 to 20 December. Jane Litton, the leader of the group, says the artists are a likeminded bunch who had a lot of fun working together and learnt a lot. Conditions, however, were somewhat trying for both models and artists in the depths of winter. Jane tells us the group is excited about exhibiting their work and she hopes there will be a good turnout for the opening. The works are for sale, with proceeds going to Happiness House.

Every year my mum would make us a big jar of this yummy fudge at Christmas time as it’s very traditional to have it for the new year. It also makes a yummy festive gift you can package up and give to friends and family! 1.1 kg granulated sugar 1 tin condensed milk 75 g butter 1 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla essence Line a 20 cm square tin with baking paper. Bring all the ingredients to a boil whilst constantly stirring. Lower the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes until it has a light tan colour and reaches a temp of about 113°C. If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, drop a spoonful into iced water and it should form a soft ball when rolled between your fingers. Remove from the heat and beat carefully with a wooden spoon until the mixture goes from smooth to slightly grainy. Pour into the tin, score with a knife into squares and leave to cool. Store in an airtight container. 10
