burst pipe It’s suddenly got a lot harder to get to Macetown after a rupture in the Arrow Irrigation pipeline about 500 m upriver from the start of the Macetown Road. The rush of water washed out the walking track and sent a landslide into the river below. QLDC isn’t sure when the walking track and the river road will be open again, but in the meantime access to Macetown is only on foot – or paraglider! There are a number of options when it comes to routes, using combinations of Big Hill, Sawpit Gully, Tobins and New Chums tracks to regain the road above the breach.
happy groovy music Miho Wada and her pint-sized jazz orchestra, in Arrowtown shortly, have a unique and original style that Miho calls ‘AfroCuban flute meets J-Pop’. The group effortlessly fuses music from varied genres played on different instruments – an eccentric electric violin, romantic acoustic guitar, sunny Latin bass and sophisticated jazz drums – to become one of the most engaging acts in New Zealand. Miho grew up in the Japanese seaside town of Miyazaki and then Christchurch. After completing a BA in flute performance at Canterbury University, she studied at the Trinity College of Music in London. There she discovered Afro-Cuban music and she has since studied and performed in Cuba and New Orleans, and played alongside Nigel Kennedy, Iggy Pop, Ska Cubano and members of the Buena Vista Social Club. Miho Wada’s Jazz Orchestra aims to uplift audiences through a mixture of positive energy and feel-good music, and both audiences and critics have responded to the vibe. Critical Jazz described the music as ‘Fresh, innovative and a unique sound.’ The New Zealand Herald was also enthusiastic: ‘With her mix of kooky, cute and tough-girl style, this Japanese born, Auckland based musician is a live music marvel.’ Miho will be in Arrowtown with the support of Arts on Tour New Zealand and Creative Queenstown. The show is at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 21 November at 7.30 pm. Seating will be cabaretstyle, with a cash bar and cheese platters from Gibbston Valley and empanadas from Empanada Kitchen available. The cost is $20 and the museum is selling tickets; tables of 6 can be reserved by emailing Janey at janey_rae@hotmail.com.

councillor comment From Councillor Scott Stevens: The first stage of our QLDC District Plan Review is underway and I would like to thank everyone who went to the effort of making a submission. Public submissions are such an important part of the process. As councillors we have identified a direction we want to take the district in, and through staff and professional consultants have developed the plan. However we would be fools to think we have a monopoly on bright ideas. We are blessed to live in a community with intelligent thoughtful people willing to contribute. At the end of the day most of us want the same thing, all though we are not
always in agreement as to the direction to take. As your elected representative my motivation is always for the greater good and betterment of Arrowtown and I am sure we will deliver a plan that will allow for Arrowtown to offer opportunities to the next generation while maintaining the village atmosphere we all love so much. The next step is for submissions to be heard in the New Year before stage two of the District Plan Review is rolled out. In the meantime it is business as usual. Families were treated to a good half hour of boom and flash, and CFO Murray Forward says he would like to publicly thank the local businesses and individuals who donated money to buy so many good quality fireworks.

Bye bye mulled wine, hello sangria. A lovely fruity drink for those hot summer afternoons. 2 bottles ‘heavy’ red wine, no need to use your best Pinot! 1 lemon 1 lime 1 orange 4 Tbsp sugar 1 small can diced pineapple in juice splash of orange juice 4 shots gin or triple sec (optional) 2 litres ginger ale Slice the citrus fruits and add sugar, whole tin of pineapple and everything else apart from the ginger ale. Let this marinate in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight for good flavour. Pour into a punch bowl or jugs and add chilled ginger ale just before serving. If you are having a big gathering, go for a 3-litre box of wine and double everything! Serve with a few ice cubes and extra berries for a special touch.
