wine and jazz Labour Weekend is right around the corner, and Gibbston Valley Winery in conjunction with the Queenstown JazzFest are celebrating with a day of fantastic live music and great wine in Arrowtown on Sunday 25 October. Arrowtown’s Day of Jazz will start with Sunday Bubbles & Brunch at A Taste of Gibbston Valley Café & Wine Bar, where guests can enjoy delicious food and wine, and music from JazzFest artists Coleman, Cornish & Craigie from Dunedin and guest vocalist Karin Reid. The brunch, served from 10 am to 1 pm, is not a ticketed event but bookings are recommended – call 03 409 8517. The festivities will continue with JazzFest artists performing throughout the day at different venues across Arrowtown. And best of all, it’s free to enjoy! The Geoff Culverwell Quartet will entertain the masses on Buckingham Green with their explosive grooves from 12 to 2 pm as part of the JazzFest Community Series. Then Mojo Webb & Li’l Chuck, the One Man Skiffle Machine, will perform bluesy favourites from 2 to 5 pm at the Fork & Tap. From 4 to 6 pm Mike Frost & the Ice Man will take centre stage at the New Orleans Hotel with lively blues, swing and R&B classics. Wakakura will round out the day in the intimate setting of The Blue Door with a mix of jazz, pop and folk. From 11 am you can buy bottles of wine from A Taste of Gibbston Valley to enjoy under the sun on Buckingham Green during the outdoor community concert. retirement village Two weeks ago the developers behind the proposed $105 million retirement village in McDonnell Road invited local community groups to come and talk about the development. Around 130 people attended over two nights at the bowling club. Artist’s impression of the proposed A presentation revealed that the plan is to Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village build 98 villas and 46 apartments, with the smallest villas likely selling off the plans for less than $500,000. There would also be leisure facilities including an arts and crafts studio. A 60-room hospital would eventually offer rest home, hospital and specialist dementia care, but that would not be built for several years, until the population of the village had built up. The developers – represented at the presentations by the Ron, Richard and Jennie Anderson – anticipate the village would work in a similar way to their Aspiring retirement village in Wanaka, where residents buy a lifetime lease/ licence to occupy then, when they die or leave, the village buys the lease back at the original price less a ‘village contribution’ that accrues at 5% of the purchase price per annum to a maximum of 25%. There is also a body corporate payment of $100 per week. The Andersons are hoping to get Open for the written support of Arrowtown locals to help fast-track the required plan change so that they can start building by the end of 2016. At question time, one local did find it interesting that many of the people who were dead against residential development when it was for affordable housing for young families were now in favour of it when they might benefit themselves! We have had a productive few months with regards to the proposal for a pump track for Arrowtown. Local businesses have been very supportive and we have received a number of expressions of interest to sponsor the track. At present we are looking at a potential figure of $6000 from local businesses. We applied to Sky City Queenstown Community Trust for funding and last week we received a grant of $2500 from them. Jan Maxwell from QLDC has been busy on our behalf and has secured $5000 from the Community Trust of Southland. We are waiting to hear back on a couple of other applications and, all going well, we will post another update in the next few weeks. miho’s jazz orchestra Arrowtown has been chosen as the venue for the latest Creative Queenstown/Arts on Tour NZ event, a visit from Miho Wada and her pocket-sized jazz orchestra. The flute player describes her music as ‘Afro-Cuban meets J-Pop’ and is promising an evening of ‘groovy tunes and nostalgic melodies’ blended with pan-Pacific jazz. Miho is playing at the Athenaeum Hall on 21 November, and tickets are $20 from the museum. 9

gluten-free coconut macaroons
400 g desiccated coconut (med thread if poss) 400 g caster sugar 40 ml cream 4 eggs plus 2 yolks Preheat oven to 170°C. Place dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix together the cream, eggs and yolks and stir into the dry ingredients. Quenelle the mixture (shape between two dessert spoons into a three-sided egg shape) and place onto tray with baking paper. If it is too sloppy add a bit more coconut as the size of eggs can affect the recipe. Bake till golden brown around the edges but not too dark. Leave to cool and set. A lovely accompaniment to crème brûlée or yummy with a cuppa. For a treat, dip the bottoms in dark chocolate and drizzle choc over the top.

Spooky is much loved by the Gent family and well known to locals. He’s 14 years old and has spent all his life in Arrowtown. In the past he would wander around visiting all the shops and especially the pie shop – where he would sit patiently and do tricks for pies! You can see his thank-you note in their window. As dogs are not allowed in the main street now he mainly stays at home but looks over the village square from his house and goes for small walks to the river. 10
