district plan review Queenstown Lakes District Council has notified its Proposed District Plan and submissions will be accepted until 23 October. The single biggest change for Arrowtown residents concerns the introduction of a Medium Density Zone that would allow smaller sections and higher housing density for about a third of the village. a murder is announced An unusual announcement in the newspaper leads the curious villagers to Miss Blacklock’s home, where they become witnesses to a murder. Can Miss Marple and Inspector Craddock find the killer before they strike again? Can you? Test your detective skills by following all the plot twists and turns – there are bound to be red herrings galore – to the inevitable big denouement at the end of the classic murder mystery A Murder is Announced at the Athenaeum Hall next week. Production manager Melanie Grindell says, ‘At halftime we are going to ask the audience, who do you think did it? And of course at the end you’ll find out if you got it right.’ The production, put on by The Hits and Remarkable Theatre, celebrates the 125th anniversary of the birth of Dame Agatha Christie, writer of 80 books and 19 plays, and the creator of St Mary Mead’s shrewdly intelligent amateur detective Jane Marple. ‘We had such fantastic audiences at ’Allo ’Allo last year,’ says Melanie, ‘we have decided come back to Arrowtown.’ By popular request this year’s show will start earlier and there will be a matinee. ‘So come out and enjoy live theatre on your doorstep!’ A Murder is Announced is on from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 September at 7.30 pm (doors open 7 pm), with a matinee at 2 pm on the Saturday. school sees red For days ahead of Red Nose Day the buzz at Arrowtown Primary School was all about what to wear. Many of the children and teachers took the invitation to be REDiculous to heart and turned up in red from their noses to their toeses or in wacky costumes, while others settled for just a red clown’s nose or a splash of red hair spray. The student council organised the day’s events, which included a hilarious comedy show. Sales of red noses, bracelets and pens raised $2000 for CureKids, the children understood the day was as much about helping children with serious illnesses as it was about having a good time, and the school outdid itself in the New Zealand Curriculum competency of Participating and Contributing.

shaping our future update Last week’s Shaping Our Future forums were well attended, with more than 120 Arrowtown residents making their way to the hall over two nights. The people who came along worked together in small groups to identify the current issues facing Arrowtown, including growth, protecting the heritage and uniqueness of Arrowtown, balancing tourism and residents, and planning for sustainable growth. Residents then moved on to looking at the key priorities for the future including managing growth, elderly care, clean air and water, housing affordability and development boundaries. Groups workshopped the critical influences, ideal scenarios and potential solutions. ‘The forum was the first stage in the process,’ said Shaping Our Future executive Anita Golden afterwards. ‘A taskforce of volunteers will now be selected to look more closely at the forum results and develop a strategic plan and recommendations. The plan and recommendations will be presented back to the community for ratification before being taken to the appropriate agencies.’ To follow the progress of the Arrowtown ‘visioning process’ visit www.shapingourfuture.org.nz.

Mix all the ingredients together and roll into balls. Put balls of mixture onto a tray with baking paper and press down slightly. Bake for 12–15 minutes, till golden brown.
