spell-binding show The Bookbinder has tied on his leather apron and sharpened his awls and is ready to create some magic. Written and performed by Ralph McCubbin Howell and directed by Hannah Smith, The Bookbinder uses puppetry and props, light, shadow and the imagination to captivate audiences of all ages. ‘We loved the idea of doing something intimate and personally engaging – like the experience you have when you actually read a book,’ Hannah says. In the pocket-sized production an old man sits down to read a tale of an apprentice. As he speaks, the story spills from the pages and in to the bindery. Instead of a vast spectacle, the audience enjoys the magic of a pop-up book, finding an eagle in the shadows created by a lamp and an ocean hiding in a jug of water. The Bookbinder is hot off sell-out seasons at Fringe Festivals in New Zealand and Australia. It won Best Theatre and Best in Fringe at the New Zealand Fringe Awards, an International Excellence award at the Sydney Fringe and the BDO Children’s Theatre award at the Fringe World in Perth. Reviewers found it ‘incredibly charming’, ‘truly gripping’ and ‘a must-see gem’. Presented by Trick of the Light Theatre and toured by Arts On Tour NZ, The Bookbinder is at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on Thursday 16 July at 7.30 pm. The show is suitable for everyone from the age of eight to eighty. Tickets are $20 and are available from the Lakes District Museum. 3

starting over ‘Kirk, I have some bad news.’ That’s how it all started. ‘Look out to your left, see that smoke in Arrowtown? That’s your house.’ Life turned on its head for Arrowtown’s Kirk Dyson a few weeks ago when his unit at the old Mace Motel caught on fire. Within minutes of his neighbour seeing smoke and dialling 111, the fire was fully involved, with flames leaping out of the broken front windows. The fire brigade was able to stop the fire spreading to other units, but could do nothing to save Kirk’s home. ‘It’s a hard thing to watch,’ Kirk says, ‘your entire belongings licked

with flames and going up in smoke.’ He lost everything except one of his six guitars. His Fender Stratocaster custom hand-built SRV was tucked under the couch. ‘I made the fire brigade go in and look under the couch. I knew that guitar would be OK. It was talking to me from inside.’ Kirk’s losses still hang heavy. ‘You don’t realise what you have sometimes until it is all taken away from you. Every day I remember things I have lost, little things, family heirlooms, tools, music equipment, it goes on.’ But Kirk says the support he’s had from the local community is astounding, especially the Salvation Army. ‘Thank you so much to all that have donated, supported and helped me through this tough time.’

casino evening The gold rush is coming back to Arrowtown soon in the form of the Great Gold Rush Casino Evening. At the themed event – you’re encouraged to dress in the style of the gold miners - punters will use play money to gamble on everything from blackjack to slater racing. Kerry Templer of Arrow Events says, ‘You are given $500,000 funny money to start off the evening and you can buy more throughout the evening if you need to top up.’ As well as the gambling tables there will be auctions using both funny money and real money. ‘There will a continuous buffet and a cash bar,’ Kerry says, ‘so you can catch up with friends and discuss your

winning or losing streak.’ The evening, hosted by Arrow Events and Queenstown Lions, is a fundraiser for Hospice Wakatipu. Kerry explains the hospice helps anyone with a terminal illness, providing a comprehensive palliative care service and nurse for the area. ‘This means people can stay in their own homes or at the Lakes District Hospital and avoid having to go to Invercargill.’ The Great Gold Rush Casino Evening is at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 1 August, with doors opening at 7 pm. Tickets are $50, or $45 for groups of 10 or more. The event is expected to be popular, so grab your tickets now from the Lakes District Museum, Wilkinsons Pharmacy in Queenstown or Remarkables Park Pharmacy. your flop-free recipe Choc Walnut Tart sweet pastry 4 eggs 120 g dark chocolate 50 g butter 230 g maple syrup or maple flavoured syrup 250 g slightly chopped walnuts 2 drops vanilla essence Line an 8” pie dish with sweet pastry, chill for 15 minutes then blind bake on 150°C till light golden colour. Use uncooked pasta twists or rice to blind bake with a circle of baking paper on top of pastry. You can keep the pasta/rice in a tub for future blind baking. Beat the eggs and set aside. Melt the chocolate and butter together in a microwave till just melted and not too hot, then whisk into the eggs. Add the syrup, nuts and vanilla. Pour mix into pie dish and bake on 150°C until just ‘set’ in the middle. Once cool, you can dust extra walnut halves with icing sugar and place on top to decorate.
