oak inspirations trash n treasure It’s looking like this year’s Arrowtown Plunket Trash n Treasure Sale will have a bumper crop of bargain baby and toddler gear. All 25 tables have been sold for the event, in which families bring their children’s no-longer-needed clothing, toys and equipment to sell on to another family that can use them. The Trash n Treasure Sale is at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on Sunday 14 June from 10 am to 1 pm. The sale is a fundraising event for Arrowtown Plunket and entry is by gold coin donation.

Arrowtown artist Paul Sewter is looking for help coming up with ideas for what to do with the oak tree that was cut down to make way for the affordable housing development in Suffolk Street.

Paul has worked out from counting the rings that the tree was planted by the earliest settlers in Arrowtown, 150 years during the gold mining days. He’d like the timber to be used in ways that benefit the community and is hoping the community itself will come up with some plans. Already it’s been suggested that it could be used in the new rugby clubhouse and Julie Hughes from Arrow Events is sure the Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival could find a use for some too. But it could be a long wait if it’s to be used for furniture or for carving as oak generally needs to be seasoned for 10 years first. English-born Paul isn’t a wood carver himself, but he is accustomed to thinking outside the box. After starting out using traditional media, he began using a stylus and computer to paint whilst studying for a masters degree. He has exhibited in some unusual places – including the Queenstown toilets – and his latest project is ‘The Myth of the Sisyphean Artist’, involving Paul carrying his own artworks up seven peaks in the district to be seen only by himself. rugby news Arrowtown had a perfect start on Saturday against Cromwell holding on to the ball for 10+ phases from the kickoff and finishing with George Ravula scoring a converted try. A sloppy period of play followed and Cromwell crossed twice to put the pressure on and take a 12–7 lead. The sloppy play from Arrowtown continued until a late converted try to Adam Hubber gave Arrowtown a 14–12 halftime lead. Arrowtown came back from the break fired up, scoring another early try to extend their lead. This time they continued to play well, racking up five tries in the second half with George Ravula scoring twice more to complete a hattrick and stalwart John Morrison finally dotting down for his first try on Jack Reid Park after close to 100 games for the club. In the end Arrowtown ran away 47–12 winners.

from words to pictures Liz Kempthorne is something of an alchemist, transmuting words into vibrant, richly coloured landscape, portrait and abstract paintings. The Clyde artist, who won the top prize at the Arrowtown Autumn Festival art competition in 2012, says she is inspired by poetry, and the name of her new exhibition, ‘The night wind spins in the sky and sings’, is a line from a poem by Pablo Neruda. The works in the exhibition vary in style, technique and mood, reflecting Liz’s artistic evolution over the last decade of practice. You can view the paintings at the Lakes District Museum until July 19, and they are for sale.

Fruit Honey & Oat Bars Supported by Truly Scrumptious www.trulyscrumptious.co.nz 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup Rice Bubbles 4 Weet-Bix, crushed 1 cup coconut ¼ cup chopped dried apricots ¼ cup chopped dried apples ¾ cup brown sugar, firmly packed ½ cup honey ½ cup peanut butter 125 g butter Grease a 19 cm x 29 cm lamington pan. Combine oats, Rice Bubbles, Weet-Bix, coconut and fruit in large bowl. Combine sugar, honey, peanut butter and butter in saucepan, stirring constantly over heat without boiling until butter is melted and sugar dissolved. Bring to the boil, reduce heat, simmer, stirring constantly for 5 minutes or until mixture thickens. Stir honey mixture into dry ingredients, press evenly into prepared pan. word from our councillor My first month representing Arrowtown on QLDC has been busy. On the agenda of my first meeting were three Special Housing Areas in and around Arrowtown and another on Speargrass Flat Road. After taking on board all the community feedback sent in by the people of Arrowtown I voted against recommending them. There was a reasonable amount of support for one proposal, Brackens Ridge on Centennial Avenue. I felt, along with all but one of my council colleagues, that now pet profile was not the right time for such a development to be fast-tracked, given Whisper (Whisper to the stars) the question marks over infrastructure and urban boundaries. However, we have to keep in mind the opportunities for future growth. Our urban boundaries have been gradually moving further out and most of us live in parts of the village that were bare land 30 years ago. The question of where the next line will be drawn is one for all of us to contemplate. Along with increased density within the current boundary, the future of Arrowtown is a contentious issue.
