arts festival for arrowtown

Arrowtown is joining the arts festival circuit with the Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival from 17 to 20 September. Organiser Julie Hughes says there will be 25 workshops, tours, talks and exhibitions covering visual and performing arts, as well as literature. Check out www. arrowevents.co.nz for details. Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade CFO Murray Forward is warning residents about the potential for house fires in this cold weather: ‘Winter hasn’t officially begun and we’ve been to three chimney fires already.’ He says that almost always the cause of these fires is lack of maintenance. ‘You need to clean the flue regularly, especially if you’re burning wet or resiny wood. If there’s a centimetre of soot lining the flue, that’s a chimney fire waiting to happen.’ Murray also wants to remind people of the importance of having working smoke alarms. ‘We recommend long-life photo-electric alarms. The batteries last for 10 years so you won’t get that annoying low-battery chirping at 4 am. And though they’re more expensive to start with, they work out cheaper in the long term.’ The New Zealand Fire Service recommends you have alarms on the ceiling in every bedroom, hallway and living area. If you can’t afford that, they say, make sure you have them at the very least in the hallway close to the bedrooms and supplement them when you can. The Fire Brigade is always happy to come out and check your smoke alarms or offer advice on the type of alarms to use and where to place them. If you are elderly or have impaired mobility, you may even be eligible to have free long-life smoke alarms Jim Shaw with Robin Watson installed.

quilts on show A while back, Tim and Anne of The Stitching Post issued a challenge to quilters to make a work of art depicting the colours and history of Arrowtown, each using some of the same fabric. All in all, 16 women put their talents to work and created some wonderful pieces, which will be on display in the gallery at the Lakes District Museum until Queen’s Birthday weekend. Prizes to the value of over $2000 were given out, and the overall champion was Mary Geary with ‘Golden Splendour’. When you visit the exhibition, you can vote for your choice of quilt – and that person will also win a prize. Displayed alongside the competition quilts, and well worth a look, are 10 quilts hand-stitched by Laura Randall of Auckland, who developed a 25 Buckingham St passion for quilting late in life and created over 230 quilts in her final 17 years. snow fun This week’s snowfall will go down in legend. Kids and tourists revelled in the 30odd centimetres of snow, making snow men and snow angels and having snowball fights. Local grown-ups, however, were busy digging out cars or checking on elderly neighbours. Lots of people didn’t make it to work and many cafés and shops were closed. The big dump even made it to the lead story on the television news, with TV3 reporter Hamish Clark crossing live from Buckingham Street for the midday and 6 pm bulletins.
