arrowtown rugby report Arrowtown Rugny Club had a tough 11-19 loss against Maniototo down in Ranfurly but there is a chance for redemption this weekend at Jack Reid Park. The team will play Upper Clutha who are currently in second place and are yet to lose this season.

new arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens, recently elected as the QLDC Arrowtown ward representative, introduces himself. I am 43 years old and live in Arrowtown with my wife, Emily. Originally from Wellington, I came down here in 1997 with a backpack and a dream. I’ve always found this area inspirational, the people and the land. So much so that I caught the entrepreneurial bug, opening my first business, a little bar in Cow Lane, Queenstown, in 1998. I have been involved in a variety of businesses, including a few years running the New Orleans Hotel here in Arrowtown. After selling the pub in 2011 I bought historic Dudley’s Cottage down by the Chinese settlement. Dudley’s was in a sorry state when I got hold of it and after a lot of hard work and expense, I successfully converted the old residential property into a commercial business housing a café, retail, bike hire and gold panning. Another of my business interests is the Lakes Weekly Bulletin. It is from 10 years of writing weekly on a variety of issues that I have learned the council business that I now represent Arrowtown on. Being self-employed I can manage my time and put the required energy into council, and hopefully still get out for gold prospecting in the Arrow River, a few rounds of golf or a hunting trip in the mountains around Glenorchy. I enjoyed meeting everyone who came down to the Fork & Tap last Thursday for a few beers. It was a celebration of my election to council but also just a good excuse to have a chat with people from this community. It’s fair to say Arrowtowners are passionate about their home town. And I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’m always keen to talk issues and will formalise regular drop-in sessions for those people with a particular area of concern to discuss. pump track progress Late last year Arrow Bikes, in conjunction with Arrowtown Primary School, put up an online survey to gauge public interest in an Arrowtown pump track. The response was extremely positive, with over 450 people supporting the idea. Since then, Arrow Hofmans Bikes has liaised with Image design by Maartin local community groups including the school, the Arrowtown Village Association, the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association and the Queenstown Mountainbike Club about the design and location for a track. The consensus was that the track should family friendly, central to Arrowtown and not impact the view of the Arrow River and a site that fits all the agreed criteria has been pinpointed. Vicky Jenkins of Arrow Bikes says, ‘It has been an intricate process so far and has taken longer than we envisioned.’ But the hard work and attention to detail has now resulted in a proposal that has been sent to QLDC, who have said provisionally that they can see no issues with the proposal or the site. top-notch movies Arrowtown’s community film group has put out the call – don’t spend Tuesday evenings on the sofa, get yourself to Dorothy Browns to meet other film fans and watch some topnotch movies on the big screen. Queenstown Film Society screens an entertaining mix of recent world cinema, classic oldies, documentaries and cult favourites. Vice-president Alison Dench says the society has come a long way in its 14 seasons – gone are the days of the 16 mm projector in a draughty hall. It now screens movies in crisp definition and vibrant colour through Dorothy Browns hi-tech digital projector and most of the older films are shown in restored versions. Alison says new members are always welcome. Screenings are 8.30 pm every Tuesday until 15 September (except school holidays). Full membership costs $120, which works out at just $6 per film for the 20-week season. Half-season membership is available at $70 and 3-film sampler tickets are $35, with the option to upgrade to full membership if you like what you see. your flop-free recipe tomato tart 1 kg mixed tomatoes (plum, rosa, cherry etc.) 1 garlic bulb olive oil for drizzling 2 Tbsp brown sugar ½ tsp chilli flakes 4 sprigs fresh thyme sea salt and ground black pepper 10 pickling onions (with skins on) 280 g self-raising flour ⅔ cup boiling water ½ cup olive oil salt 130 g basil pesto fresh oregano and basil balsamic cream (optional) Preheat oven to 180°C. Slice or quarter the mixed tomatoes and place on a baking tray with bulb of garlic sliced horizontally through the centre. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with brown sugar, chilli flakes and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Roast in the bottom part of oven for 30–45 minutes till slightly caramelised. Rub pickling onions (with skins on) with olive oil and place in a small ovenproof dish and roast with the tomatoes until tender. Allow to cool, then squeeze out one of the halves of the garlic bulb and set aside. Grease 25 x 35 cm baking tray. Combine flour, boiling water, ½ cup olive oil and salt. Stir to form a soft introduce your dough. Press dough into base and sides of baking tray and bake for 25 business to the minutes. Remove from oven and spread with basil pesto and reserved roast local market garlic. Scatter with squeezed out onions, top with the tomatoes and return to oven for 10 minutes. Garnish with oregano and basil. Drizzle with balsamic cream if desired. 03 442 0327 10
