good in the hood Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade has again been chosen as one of the four community groups in the Good in the Hood promotion at Z petrol station in Frankton Road. When you fill up at Z in May you’ll be given a chance to vote on your preferred charity and decide how much money they receive. Last year thanks to your votes the brigade received $929, which they put towards buying and installing 10-year smoke alarms for elderly or disabled residents. 1

Award-winning actor and writer Helen Moulder and treasure of New Zealand ballet Sir Jon Trimmer are joining forces once again to tour their theatre work Meeting Karpovsky around New Zealand, and Arrowtown is lucky enough to be on the itinerary. Years ago ballet lover Sylvia was a world traveller and a regular at the great ballet theatres. Now she cocoons herself in an attic filled with blownup photographs of her favourite dancer and her daughter’s unwanted possessions. One day Alexander Karpovsky – she has seen him dance 127 times – mysteriously appears and teaches the clumsy Sylvia to dance. Originally performed to rapturous response in 2002, this latest production has again been acclaimed by reviewers. The Listener described the performances of Helen Moulder and Sir Jon Trimmer as ‘Pure magic – together they are magnificent’. Theatreview judged Helen Moulder’s Sylvia a delight, ‘funny and sad and credible’ and Sir Jon’s Karpovsky as ‘expressive, engaging and enchantingly enigmatic’. You’ll have your chance to enjoy this extraordinary blend of theatre, music and dance at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday 9 May at 7.30 pm. Tickets are $25 from the Lakes District Museum. feehly hill planting This Saturday the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust is looking for many hands to make light work planting native species on Feehly Hill. Volunteer co-ordinator Ange van der Laan says the planting will supplement the work that’s already been done and will make a huge difference to the appearance of the previously weed-infested hill. Erik Bradshaw of the Arrowtown Village Association has worked with Arrowtown School to get the kids involved and the Scouts are on mulching duties. All plants are provided by the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust and grown in the Jean Malpas Nursery in Jardine Park. Ange says she’d love to see a great turnout from the Arrowtown community for this final planting event of the autumn season. The planting session is Saturday 2 May from 9 am to 12 pm. Meet at the cemetery in Durham St and bring gloves and a spade or shovel.

anzac day generosity This year as a special Gallipoli 100th event, Arrowtown RSA hosted an old-fashioned tea dance to bring the community together at the end of ANZAC day. The evening was a huge success with around 160 people enjoying supper, listening to music, dancing and catching up with friends. Organiser Julie Hughes says the support of local businesses and musicians made the evening special. Not a single supplier charged for their services: Mann Made Catering provided the food, Rockformation the sound system, QLDC the hall hire, Party Plus the hire equipment, and entertainment came from the Arrow Miners Band, Buckingham Belles, Queenstown Jazz Orchestra, Remarkable Vocal Trio, Arrow Entertainers and Southern Nights. All for free. Julie says that thanks to their ANZAC spirit and generosity, all the money from ticket sales will go towards special landscaping and plantings at the cenotaph.

locals clean up at art 2 wear Creative and inventive Arrowtowners were to the fore at this year’s Art 2 Wear with all but one of the top spots and many of the places going to locals. Heather Guise aced the Handbag category with her piece ‘Turkish Delight’, while Jan Forward won over both the judges and the crowds with ‘Breaking the Cycle – Salvaging the Parts’, winner of the Selvage/Salvage category as well as the people’s choice award – voted for by the audience – on both nights of the show. It’s not the first time Jan has entered Art 2 Wear, but it is the first time she hasn’t made a sewn garment. This year, after a colleague challenged her to create something entirely out of unwanted bike parts, she went dumpster diving in the recycle bin at Arrow Bikes. Jan pulled out tyres, wheel rims, chains, gear rings, inner tubes and valves and built them up into a fantastical suit of armour. ‘I began collecting late last year and started by breaking it all up and cleaning the oil, grease and dirt off,’ Jan says. Then came endless hours putting it all together. ‘It’s been a real challenge learning how to use different tools and coming up with ways to make it all stay together and still be wearable. But this would be the costume I have had the most fun with. And not a sewing machine in sight!’

your flop-free recipe Creamy Strawberry Crepes Treat your mum this Mothers Day with these delicous crepes for breakfast. 3 eggs ½ cup milk ½ cup water 3 Tbsp butter, melted ¾ cup all-purpose flour ½ tsp salt 225g cream cheese, softened 1¼ cups sifted icing sugar 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp lemon zest ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 cup cream, whipped 4 cups sliced strawberries Place the eggs, milk, water, melted butter, flour and salt in a blender; blend until smooth. Heat a lightly oiled non-stick pan over medium heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the pan, using approximately 2 Tbsp for each crepe. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly as possible. Flip over when the batter is set and the edges are beginning to brown. Cook until the other side begins to brown. Stack finished crepes on a plate, cover with a damp towel and set aside. Blend the cream cheese, icing sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped cream. Fill each crepe with sliced strawberries and cream cheese filling, roll up and top with a little cream cheese and strawberries. 10

It started with a phone call to Bill Crooks. Phil Crosbie and Emma Lange had come across a brokendown vintage car on the Crown Range. They recognised the car and its owner, Heidi Hetzer, from an ODT article about a retired German car dealer, motor mechanic and rally driver who’s driving around the world in a car called Hudo. Of course local knowledge helps, and Phil and Emma knew just the guy to fix it, Bill Crooks of Arrow Auto & Marine. Next thing, Bill’s taking apart a Hudson 8 in his workshop to find a carburettor full of alloy swarf and a stuffed alternator drive, then he’s inviting Heidi to tea at his place and hearing stories about her amazing world travels. ‘One that sticks in my mind,’ he says, ‘was when she was travelling across Australia the wooden wheels came loose. She had to remove the wheels and throw them in a creek and let the water swell the wood.’ Bill says he’s grateful Phil and Emma recommended him for the repairs. ‘It has been a privilege to work for Heidi Hetzer on her 1930 Hudson 8.’
