As we approach the commemoration of the 100 years since the ANZAC landings on Gallipoli few New Zealanders could have imagined the magnitude of the trauma to come, or the lasting impact it would have on our nation. About 103,000 Kiwis served overseas during World War I and four years later, by the close of the war, 18,500 had fallen. The price of international peace and security was massive for a small and pioneering country as we were then. It was the birth of New Zealand as a nation. Of the 290 from the Wakatipu, 85 did not return. In Arrowtown we can identify 18 whose names appear on our cenotaph memorial but there are a few others, their background more difficult to trace, who possibly appear on other memorials. The RSA in conjunction with the Queenstown Lakes District Council is well advanced on restoration work at the memorial on Soldiers Hill. The cenotaph, erected in 1923, was in need of structural repairs due to settlement of the lower steps/plinths and movement in the pillars and railing on the south and west elevations. We are grateful to the Lotteries Commission, Central Lakes Trust, SkyCity Community Trust and Community Trust of Southland for their financial assistance. Along with the 10.30 am service at the Athenaeum Hall, tributes to the 18 Arrowtown soldiers will be displayed. The parade and wreath laying will follow, including a Tiger Moth aircraft flyover and a sixcannon firing salute, and in the evening a tea dance. John Lindsay RSA Past President

cricket success Inspired no doubt by the Black Caps, the Arrowtown School girls cricket team have had a winning streak good enough to see them heading to the ActivePost Shield national competition in Palmerston North in October. To get there, they won the Otago regional competition by beating Queenstown and Remarkables in the first round, Blue Mountain College in Tapanui in the second and Balmacewan Intermediate in Dunedin in the final, which they won by six wickets. These keen and hard-working Year 7 and 8 girls are coached by Mark Jessop and Mark Williams.

To help you make your choice, we asked the candidates if they were for, against or undecided on a range of proposals and invited them to give their reason in 15 words or less. Howard Scott (HS), Basil Walker (BW) and Scott Stevens (SS) gave the following replies. Some answers have been edited for length. 1. Medium density housing zone for Arrowtown as outlined in QLDC’s recent proposal HS: Undecided. Would vote according to any clear view presented from ward ratepayers. BW: Against. Winter sun is precious. Preserve heritage Arrowtown and trees. SS: Against. Increased height limits and density threaten the character of Arrowtown.

SS: Against, if it comes at considerable cost to the residential ratepayers of Arrowtown. 5. Water metering for Arrowtown HS: Undecided. Would vote according to any clear view presented from ward ratepayers. BW: Against. Water is provided through rates. Another payment not required. SS: Against until QLDC stop wasting thousands of litres from split pipes and other infrastructure failure. 6. Fluoridation of water in Arrowtown HS: Undecided. Would vote according to any clear view presented from ward ratepayers. BW: For. Until excess sugar in food/drinks is understood fluoridation is required. SS: For. Is there a valid argument against? 7. Substantial QLDC funding to remove wilding pines on Arrowtown’s autumn colour hill faces
HS: Undecided. Would vote according to any clear view presented from ward ratepayers. BW: For. Excellent wilding removal has started in Wakatipu. Protect the autumn colours. SS: Absolutely for - as a matter of urgency. It’s scary how quickly the hillsides are changing. 8. Pedestrianisation of Buckingham St HS: Undecided. Would vote according to any clear view presented from ward ratepayers. BW: Undecided. Absolutely for special occasions. Congestion only an issue at peak times. SS: Against. Why try and fix what is not broken. 9. Special Housing Area subdivisions on the fringes of Arrowtown HS: Undecided. Would vote according to any clear view presented from ward ratepayers. BW: Strongly against . Fringe proposal contrary to existing planning. Unreasonable precedent. SS: Undecided. With limited information available, it is impossible to definitively answer for or against.
How to vote Adults who live and/or pay rates in Arrowtown ward are entitled to vote; enrolled voters should have received voting papers by now. If you have not received voting papers you can make a special vote at Arrowtown Library or the QLDC office in Gorge Rd. Votes need to be in the hands of the electoral officer by midday on 1 May 2015. 7
ninety-four years young On 7 April Jack Reid of Reidhaven in Villiers St, our oldest born-andbred Arrowtowner, turned 94. Rita Teele caught up with him and sent us this story about his life. Jack Reid was born in Arrowtown and has lived here his entire life, barring some time in Dunedin for an engineering apprenticeship, which itself was interrupted by overseas war service. Jack’s grandparents James and Jane Reid came from the Orkney Islands. They arrived at the Arrow River with their two children in 1864. By 1866 the family had made enough from goldmining to move from their riverside camp to a stone house James had built, in which Jack still lives. James switched to farming and his son John took over the farm and dairy when James died. Jack went to the primary school on Anglesea St, but in the 1930s there was no high school in town so his secondary schooling was by correspondence. When he wasn’t studying he worked on the family farm. Jack served in the RAF in World War II, and after training in Canada he flew as gunner in Britain. On his return to Arrowtown he worked in the Post Office and Exchange for nearly 19 years. When the exchange was automated, Jack bought Mrs Parsons’s shop across the road and his wife, Margaret, worked there with him. Many in Arrowtown will remember buying sweets at Reid’s Cash Store, which is now the Night AND GO TO THE n Day. Jack Reid was the last mayor of Arrowtown – following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Jack Reid Park was named after him, and he is one of the few people in New Zealand who have met Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Nelson Mandela and John Major as well as other Commonwealth heads of state!

your flop-free recipe Hummingbird Cake
3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 2 cups sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large eggs, beaten 1 cup vegetable oil 1½ tsp vanilla extract 225 g can crushed pineapple, undrained 1 cup chopped pecans 2 cups chopped bananas ½ cup chopped pecans Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; add eggs and oil, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened (do not beat). Stir in vanilla, pineapple, pecans and bananas. Pour batter into three greased and floured 9-inch (23 cm) round cake tins. Bake at 175°C for 25 to 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes; remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks. Spread cream cheese icing between layers and on top and sides of cake; sprinkle ½ cup chopped pecans on top. Store in refrigerator. 10

The cold weather couldn’t spoil the fun on Tuesday when the Post Office celebrated 100 years with speeches, raffle drawing, cake cutting, From left: Stella 100 balloons Stretch, Amelia Peasey & Tama Kopa released and the Front: Isla Wallis unveiling of the new plaque by long serving former manager Marilyn Everett and former employee Jack Reid. The winners of the stamp competition were acknowledged: Stella Stretch, Amelia Peasey, Isla Wallis, Kate Culling and Tama Kopa, who is the overall winner. This was Marilyn Gourlay’s last Post Office function before she leaves Arrowtown for Christchurch. Her final day will be this Friday.
