Arrowtown is getting its own special free Easter egg hunt, courtesy of Apt Design and the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association. This hunt is a bit different from the traditional chocolate hunt. Kids need to turn up at the Post Office on Easter Sunday or Easter Monday between 10 am and 4 pm, collect a map and search for over 30 sponsored eggs hidden around town. Mark on the map where you found the eggs (but leave the eggs in place!), and post your plotted map back in at the Post Office to be in to win an Easter basket full of goodies.
The children of Arrowtown School have been doing more than their fair of fundraising for good causes lately. In response to the devastating cyclone in Vanuatu, the school raised over $2000 through a coin trail, selling lemonade and holding a cupcake competition. On a smaller, more local scale, the Room 14 class is sponsoring a New Zealand child through KidsCan. Just $140 a year goes to supply food in school, a raincoat, shoes, and possibly health initiatives such as nit treatment. Teacher Nicole Fawcett hopes this will help her Year 2 class understand they have a role to play in the well-being of their community. ‘I would like them to feel really good about contributing, and realise that helping others makes us feel great inside.’ The children will together raise $35 each term by working in the community. Last week they completed their first project, picking up litter from beside the river in return for a donation by the Arrowtown Village Association. You can see in the cover photo how much rubbish they collected in just one morning. 3

Arrowtown pair Edward and Lisa Guy are now in India, preparing for what might just be the biggest challenge of their lives. Starting 6 April they’ll have 11 days to cover around 3000 km from Jaisalmer, near the Pakistan border, to Shillong, on the far side of Bangladesh. Doesn’t sound too hard? Well it is if you’re driving a glorified lawnmower – a 7 hp rickshaw that takes 5 hours to cover 100 km and then overheats. Add to that breakdowns, accidents, getting lost and getting stuck in mud, and you’ve got one huge adventure. The Rickshaw Run is an international event that runs twice a year, and this time there will 80 teams competing and raising money. The Guys’ charities are Live More Awesome, a New Zealand charity helping people deal with depression, and Cool Earth, which protects rainforests. post office centenary On Tuesday 14 April Arrowtown post office’s 100th birthday will be celebrated with visiting dignitaries, speeches, cake, balloons and children’s activities. The post office has been the hub of the village since World War I. When NZ Post withdrew from Arrowtown in 1995, the museum bought the refurbished building with the help of QLDC and community fundraising. Since then it has operated as a Post Centre and gift shop, with maintenance paid for by the annual Christmas market. At 12 pm on the 14th, former post office employees and local identities will join MP Todd Barclay to unveil a plaque. The prizes in the children’s stamp design competition will be presented and the winning designs will be available as stickers, alongside the legal commemorative stamps. The raffles currently running at the post office (with prizes donated by Postmasters, Oddfellows, Dorothy Browns, The Gold Shop and Chard Farm) will be drawn. The museum is running communication-themed kids’ workshops that day too, with code cracking, letter writing, semaphore, how to prepare a wax seal and more. The workshops, which cost only a gold coin donation, are suitable for 8- to 14-year-olds. There are two sessions to choose from: 10 am to 12 pm or 2 pm to 4 pm. Places are limited so register with the museum on 442 0317.

your flop-free recipe easter nests ¼ cup butter 4½ cups mini marshmallows ¼ cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips 4 cups chow mein noodles candy eggs (mini Cadbury eggs, M&Ms or jelly beans) In heavy saucepan over medium heat melt butter and marshmallows. Stir in peanut butter and chocolate chips until melted. Remove from heat and stir in chow mein noodles. Work on wax paper and form 18–24 mounds. Dip fingers into cold water as you work to prevent mixture from sticking and shape each mound into a nest. Fill with 2 or 3 candies each. Cool and store in airtight container.
