wine and food festival This Saturday Gibbston’s winemakers will make the short trek to Queenstown Gardens to join some of New Zealand’s most talented chefs for the 2015 SkyCity Queenstown Gibbston Wine and Food Festival. Festival goers will have the chance to taste world-class wines from 10 wineries and delicious local cuisine at 14 food stalls. For those interested in more than just sampling the wares, there will be master classes with local winemaking identities and chefs including Sean Connolly of Gusto at the Grand in Auckland and our own MasterChef finalist Jaimie Stodler. But it’s not just about the food and wine – the 18-piece Queenstown Jazz Orchestra will entertain the crowds. Plus just a three-minute walk away at Marine Parade Reserve there will be up to 100 HarleyDavidsons from the Iron Run on show, with public voting for the best bike. Worried there won’t be anything for the kids to do? Don’t be. The festival has a dedicated kids’ entertainment area with the option to book day-care so you can attend the master classes. The SkyCity Queenstown Gibbston Wine and Food Festival is on Saturday 21 March from 10 am to 6 pm. Entry is $20, which includes three wine-tasting tokens and a souvenir glass. On Saturday 21 March in Arrowtown you’ll get the chance to see something you won’t see again in a hurry. Between 11 am and 1 pm that day around 1500 Harley-Davidsons will come into town and park up in the main street for the largest gathering of Harleys ever seen in the Wakatipu. On leaving Arrowtown they’ll head to Queenstown and 100 of the top-line bikes will be on show at Marine Parade Reserve in support of Happiness House Community Centre and Hospice Wakatipu. The Harley-Davidsons are converging on the Wakatipu on Friday from six different Iron Run rides from starting points throughout New Zealand.

swimming club prize giving The Arrowtown Swim Club held its end-of-season ribbon night on 6 March. The council opened the pool specially, there was a free barbecue and the kids turned out in force. The newly introduced parents race was fiercely contested; the kids loved it and it will be annual event. Club president Deborah Mcleod reported it was a great season, thanks to the hard work of the committee and parents. Plus sponsor Michael Tierney of Ray White, who supplied new T-shirts and sweatshirts this year. Deborah also acknowledged the help of the weather gods, who provided plenty of sunny days to warm the water in the pool and make swimming seem like an appealing option.

next generation tear up the trails Around 180 bike riders aged from 3 to 14 took over Butlers Green at the weekend, and proud parents cheered them on as they pedalled around three different Bush Creek courses for the Veolia Kids Mini X. The boys short race was won by Theo Riddle just ahead of his brother Jake. The 6-year-old Queenstown twins, who found internet fame when a video of them riding Gorge Road Jump Park went viral, pushed Joshua O’Callaghan into third. Polly Bennetts (7) won the girls short race ahead of Arrowtown pair Lucy Houghton (6) and Alice David (7). Georgia Thomson (10) was first home in the girls medium race ahead of Caitlyn Hollyer (10) and Arrowtown’s Jett Fa’amalepe (10). Reef Roberts won the boys medium race with Tyler Harris of Arrowtown (9) second and Griffyn Crawford (8) third. The boys long course race ended with a full Arrowtown podium of Sylvio Billoud (14), Loic Billoud (12) and Max McDonald (11). Nell Watherston (12) was fastest girl ahead of Amelia McIlroy (12, Arrowtown) and Zoe Crawford (10, Arrowtown). At the prize giving generously supported by Veolia, Jack Smith from Lake Hayes Estate won the big spot prize of a brand new bike courtesy of Arrow Bikes. Queenstown Bike Festival director Geoff Hunt said it was hugely encouraging to see so many youngsters clearly enjoying themselves on their bikes. ‘We had everything from littlies on trikes and balance bikes through to some sweet looking machines with riders dressed up like the pros,’ he said. 8

Makes about 5 jars 1 kg courgettes (ideally no longer than
15–20 cm otherwise too many seeds, if bigger cut some of the white stuff away)
3 Tbsp salt 1 onion 2 cups white sugar 2 Tbsp cornflour 2 tsp turmeric 2 tsp mustard powder 1 tsp curry powder 2 cups white vinegar

Chop up courgettes to medium dice. I use the processor, just don’t turn it to mush as you want some texture in your pickle. Sprinkle on salt and mix through. Leave for half an hour then drain in colander, do not rinse. Then use potato masher to press out as much moisture as possible. Finely chop onion, place in pot with sugar. Mix all dry ingredients together then add enough vinegar to make a paste then add remaining vinegar. Add to pot with courgettes and bring up to boil, simmer till thickens probably about half hour. Spoon into hot sterilised jars. Once lid is on, turn jars upside down to create seal. You could store in fridge but you may not need to. International cricket legend Brian Lara made Hugh Hodgson’s day with a lunchtime visit to Arrowtown School last week. The West Indian – in Arrowtown to play at the BMW New Zealand Open – surprised both teachers and students with the visit, during which he played in an impromptu cricket match and signed autographs. The reason for his visit? A letter written by eight-year-old Hugh welcoming him to the tournament and helpfully telling him a few things he could do in the historic village. ‘He sent me a very nice letter and after a good day of golf yesterday it put that extra smile on my face to read it at my hotel,’ said Brian Lara. Teacher Sally Hoskin said her Room 8 class had sent 20 letters to golf and cricketing greats playing at the golf tournament. ‘It was fantastic of him to come here today, the children were so excited, and now we have two personally signed cricket bats for the school. Not many schools in New Zealand have that!’
