flying pancakes takes off There’s been a culture shift at the Flight Park, with the café now offering something completely new for Arrowtown. Russian émigrés Elena and Ivan Skorykh are expanding Arrowtowners’ appreciation of world cuisine by serving favourites from their homeland at the newly reopened and renamed Flying Pancakes Café. On the menu are delicious dumplings called pirogi, sweet pastries known as vatrushka and the Russian soup, borsh. Of course there are also pancakes, and they’re not run-of-the-mill pancakes – they’re Russian so they’re thin and fluffy with a beautiful texture that will melt in your mouth. In the early evening the delicious aroma of shashlyk (marinated meat kebabs) on the barbecue wafts around the garden. Flying Pancakes has an all-day breakfast pancake menu, as well as savoury pancakes and traditional Russian dishes for lunch and early dinner. There’s also a range of pastries, cakes and desserts to tempt you at any time of day. Only food purchased can be consumed on site, except you may bring baby formula and paste. Elena and Ivan pride themselves on the café’s family-friendly approach. It’s a fantastic place to take kids, with all the toys they could wish for, a sand pit and a fenced mini sports field complete with balls. Elena and Ivan say that whether you are enjoying a coffee while watching the paragliders land, settling in for lunch or early dinner, or bringing the family for a run around, you’ll find something to tickle your taste buds. What could be better Valentine’s Day entertainment than an afternoon of love songs? To that end Sue Patterson has joined three of her pupils to perform operatic arias, folk songs and show music with a theme of love. Sue has won many awards and has performed in opera and musical theatre. She has sung solos with the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament touring choir and the Central Otago Regional Choir. Anna Morley has performed solos for the St Peter’s Church choir and with Remarkable Vocals. Deborah Lind has sung extensively in Auckland, including a lead role in All Shook Up. Alan Pickard has sung solos for the Central Otago Regional Choir. He is also a published poet and will read a special love poem. The foursome, accompanied by Alison Frude, will sing music by Puccini, Bizet, Gounod, Handel and more. With Love: Opera in the Gallery is at Thomas Brown’s Gallery in Speargrass Flat Road at 4 pm on Saturday 14 February. Interval refreshments will feature Valentine’s Day cupcakes by Jaimie of Masterchef fame and bubbly. Tickets are $25 from the museum. 7

Gold panners of all abilities from raw novices to true champions will have their chance to test their mettle – and find their metal – in not one but two local competitions this year. First up is the New Zealand Speed Panning Championship, sponsored by The Gold Shop Arrowtown, at the inaugural New Zealand Rural Games at the Queenstown Recreation Ground 7–8 February. Here ten of New Zealand’s elite gold panners will compete in an invitation-only event. These guys and girls are fast, so fast that the contest starts at midday on the 8th and is all over within an hour. It’s all quite a contrast with the daylong New Zealand Gold Panning Championships on Sunday 19 April, run by the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust as part of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival. At the top of the field the competition will be fierce, but there is also an emphasis on passing on skills and connecting with the history of the area. This competition is open to everyone, and has special section for the havea-go competitor no matter the age. There are different competitive categories, but the best gold panners of all ages and genders compete together in the grand final. In fact teenager Amelia GatwardFerguson, the overall New Zealand champion for the last three years, was only 14 when she won her first championship.
