AUTUMN IS HERE We spend most of our time indoors but some may be on the lookout for a change of home. However, it’s usually not possible to change our interior each autumn and spring adhering to the decorative trends. So how can you do something quickly and easily to add a trendy touch indoors and still get a rewarding feel for the Autumn? The trend right now is that the 70's are back. Colours with orange, brown, green, mustard and yellow. These are the colours that usually return every Autumn, in subtle, little different shades. Autumn

colours are typically a subdued colour scale. A harmonic colour scale. Now this Autumn, it's a musty orange, a darker green. But also gold / brass and toned glass as well as musty blue colours. Velvet has made a return, for curtains, pillows and bedspreads. A simple tip is to renew your rooms with less detail. You do not have to replace your entire furniture. A pillow, a blanket, new candle lanterns. If you focus on just changing three details towards this Autumn's trendy colours, you get a quick change that does not have to cost a fortune. Also do not forget the lighting: we need some cozy lighting indoors. Several light sources, ceiling lamp, floor lamp, table lamp. Think function, cleaninglight, reading light, candle light .... With such illumination you can do wonders but that requires an article all by itself.

One of the signs that autumn is here are the many design fairs, offering a glimpse of furniture and interior design. Autumn fairs show off next year's trends while Television programs about interior design compete with each other and furnishing magazines feature one trendy home after another.

Inrednings hälsningar Mariana Ramselius Inredningsarkitekt Silander&Holst S.L www.silanderholst.com

GARDEN DESIGN, WHAT IS IT REALLY? I think Garden Design means different things to all of us. Maybe we see pictures in front of us in huge parks with well- raked passes and flowerbeds without a single weed. Hedges so sharp that you can almost use them as a knife ... or? It is interesting that neither Wikipedia nor the Swedish Academy's glossary has any words on the word "garden design". It can certainly explain why we all have different views about the meaning. For me as a designer, it means a "design of the residence´s outer space" whether the customer has a small balcony, a large terrace or a garden. The outer space should be an oasis where you can feel calm and make the whole family feel good. The most important thing about garden design is to listen to the wishes of the customer as a designer and to amply satisfy them. Sometimes it's about stopping the customer from buying too many plants and / or "wrong" plants, namely plants that will not fit where the customer planned to put them. Having a

lot of plants around the pool can make it extremely beautiful but it can be really wrong and an expensive experience. In other words, it may be worth taking tips and advice from a designer when the garden is to be decorated. There are plenty of opportunities for us at Silander & Holst to help you with this. You can book a time for

advice, with or without a drawing. We can do all or part of the work in your outer space. Garden design is something for all of us in large or small homes. Green greetings, Marie Gardendesign Silander&Holst 611 498 612 www.silanderholst.com

COSTA BLANCA TIMES

by Keith Nicol

It's that special time of year when it's OK to dress up outrageously away from the golf course, dance in the streets, get out your your broomstick, burn effigies in the back garden and let off a few fireworks. Yes, Halloween is at the end of the month, followed by a public holiday on November 1st for All Saints Day: so it's all a bit of good fun. The Alicante Race Village is open thru October 22nd with more details of all the events and racing schedule at: www.alicantepuertodesalida.com/

Got a taste for the good things in life, then you won't want to miss either Expo Torrevieja on November 11 and 12th, and preceding it, GastroVegaBaja 2017. GastroVegaBaja is a festival in which Gastronomy and Culture unite and takes place the 28th, 29th and 30th of October in Salones Bahia Costa, La Mata, Torrevieja, in the same location as Expo Torrevieja will take place, in November. During this event there will be tasters, workshops, cooking demonstrations, gastronomic debates and plenty of fun for the whole family. Doors are open from 11:30am to 6:30pm.

If you're a music fan, then and in particular Jazz and Blues, just across the border in Murcia, you won't want to miss the 37th Edition of the Cartagena Jazz Festival. The festival features performances by jazz legends like Michael Nyman and Chick Corea, who will perform accompanied by Steve Gadd. Concerts will be held on Friday and Saturday during November at the two venues of the festival, the Auditorio El Batel and the Nuevo Teatro Circo. All the information is available on the website www.jazzcartagena. es. Every Saturday at 12:30pm you can also enjoy free concerts in the Plaza del Icue, while on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night there are other free concerts around the city.

Being also Half Term in the UK and Ireland, many families will be in the region enjoying the Halloween season. Torrevieja's main streets are expected to come alive with Flash – Mob Dancing from about 9.00pm on Halloween Night, as the King of Pop, Mi-

chael Jackson leads the dancing through the streets with a host of local dancers, all in their zombie attire, performing Thriller and other great seasonal tunes. A fun night in the town centre. Other town Halls have organised their own Zombie Nights for the youngsters in their towns too. The 13th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will official leave Alicante Port on the 22nd October 2017.

The official program will begin on Friday, November 3rd with performances by Luisa Sobral and Dee Dee Bridgewater. On Friday, November 10th, pianist Chick Corea and drummer Steve Gadd perform together. One day later, on Saturday 11th, it will be the turn of Jay Jay Johanson and José James. It has been almost 20 years since the Swedish singer and songwriter Jay Jay Johanson first came to our attention and he will present his latest album Looking Glass II. The closing night of the festival, is Saturday 25 November. There are 200 Abonos or Festival Passes available for just 55€ each which are valid for all concerts. They can be brought at the ticket office at the Nuevo Teatro Circo and the Auditorio El Batel (10:00-14:00 & 17:00-20:00 Monday to Friday). on Friday, 10th November, 2017 at the Teatro Capitol de Rojales. Curtain up at 7:00pm and tickets are priced from 10:00€. Admittedly the staging will be in Spanish but that should not be a problem for the young ones and everyone will enjoy the music from the Disney film of the same name. Looking slightly ahead, so you can plan a little, on Thursday thru Sunday from 23rd November to 3rd December 2017, it's time again for one of Torrevieja’s most successful innovations: the Tapas Route, which is run twice a year around the city centre. It’s a fun and inexpensive way to spend an afternoon or evening, touring the centre of Torrevieja and dis-

covering some of the hidden delights of the city. All participants can vote for their favourite Tapa, and in doing so, after you have collected 10 official stamps on the Tapas Route Card, be entered into a prize draw for a number of great prizes. A great event that many other local communities have also copied, and it is a success wherever it is held.

20 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT 'YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN'

By Keith Nicol It's been more than 40 years since the brilliant Young Frankenstein hit our screens and so it's time once again to celebrate the Mel Brooks Halloween favourite. Co-writers Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks penned the script and Brooks directed an all-star cast en route to almost $87 million domestic, not bad for a movie that cost $3 million to make. We've found 20 great facts you might not know about the movie itself, as well as its wild production. 1. Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks got into a big fight while writing one night in Wilder's apartment. Brooks threw a huge temper tantrum, yelling and raging, and eventually storming out into the street. After a short time, Wilder's phone rang and Brooks was on the other end. He said, "Who was that madman you had in your house!? I could hear the yelling all the way over here!! You should never let crazy people into your house, don't you know that!!? They could be dangerous!!" That was Mel's way of apologizing, according to Wilder. 2. During pre-production, Brooks found Ken Strickfaden, who had made the elaborate electrical machinery for the lab sequences in the Universal Studios Frankenstein films. Strickfaden had saved all the equipment and had it stored in his garage. Brooks then made a deal to rent it all for Young Frankenstein and give Strickfaden the screen credit he'd deserved, but hadn't gotten, for the original films. 3. Teri Garr and Madeline Kahn were originally supposed to play each other's roles. But Kahn ultimately decided she'd rather play Elizabeth, the fiance, leaving Brooks with the task of recasting Inga the assistant. He called Garr in and told her that if she could come back the next day with a German accent,

he'd like her for Inga. She looked at him and said, "Vell, yes, I could do zee German ackzent tomorrow. I could come back zis afternoon!" And the part was hers. Garr has said that she based her accent on Cher's wig maker whom she worked with on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour in 1971. 4. Brooks usually appeared in his own films but Wilder insisted he stay out of Young Frankenstein. The actor felt the funnyman's appearance would ruin the illusion and declared he would only make the film if he promised not to appear in it. Brooks did, however, make off-camera appearances as the howling wolf, Dr. Frankenstein's grandfather, and the shrieking cat.

tory of the World: Part I (1981) and again in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). 8. The shifting hump on Igor's back was improvised by Feldman. He had been shifting the thing back and forth for several days as a joke when cast members finally noticed. It was then added to the script. 9. The idea of a dart hitting a cat was improvised on set. When Dr. Frankenstein (Wilder) threw his dart off camera, Brooks quickly screamed like a cat to create the illusion.

5. When Columbia Pictures realized Brooks wanted to shoot the film in black and white, they balked, and the director took the project to 20th Century Fox the next day where Alan Ladd Jr. had just taken over. Ladd had no problem with the decision.

6. The brain which Igor is sent to steal is labelled "Hans Delbrück, scientist and saint." There actually was a real life Hans Delbrück; he was a 19th-century German military historian and professor at the University of Berlin. His son Max Delbrück was a 20th-century biochemist and Nobel laureate. 7. Mel Brooks initially thought that the "Walk this way" gag was too corny and wanted it cut from the film. But, when he saw the audience's reaction to it one night at a screening, he decided to leave it in. The famous "walk this way..." gag was the inspiration for the Aerosmith song of the same name. The band had seen Young Frankenstein in 1974 during a break from recording and Steven Tyler wrote the song the next morning. After the film's release, the joke became so popular Brooks slipped it into His-

10. In the scene after the dart game, when Kenneth Mars's character is leaving the castle, there is a gargoyle on the side of the building that looks like Alfred Hitchcock. 11. Wilder conceived the "Puttin' on the Ritz" scene, but Brooks was resistant to it and felt it would detract from the tone of the Universal horror films in the rest of the film. Wilder recalled being "close to rage and tears" and argued for the scene before Brooks stopped him and said, "It's in!" When Wilder asked why the sudden shift, Brooks said it would be the

11 right thing to do since Wilder fought so hard for it.

does to them when no one is around".

12. When they started to film the "Puttin' on the Ritz" scene, no one was sure what Boyle should say as the Frankenstein monster. The first time out of the gate, however, Boyle came up with the hilarious, half-jibberish vocalization, "Puttin on the Riiizzzzz!"

18. Wilder has said Young Frankenstein is his favourite of all his movies.

13. The experiment the medical student mentions, where Darwin preserved a worm in fluid until it came to life, is mentioned in Mary Shelley's foreword to the novel Frankenstein. The Darwin in question was Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of the famous Charles Darwin. 14. Supposedly the scene which required the most takes was Igor biting Elizabeth's animal wrap. Each take ended with fur in Feldman's mouth which slayed everyone on set.

15. The Blind Man's parting line, "I was gonna make espresso" was not in the script, but was ad-libbed by Gene Hackman during shooting. This is the reason for the immediate fade to black in the movie, as the crew reportedly erupted into fits of laughter. Hackman was uncredited when the movie was originally released in theatres. 16. Peter Boyle and Marty Feldman were cast, in part, because their mutual agent had a deal with the movie studio.

19. The original cut of the movie was almost twice as long as the theatrical release, and was considered by all to be an abysmal failure. It was only after a marathon cutting session that the final film was finished. Both Wilder and Brooks considered it to be far superior to the original product. At one point they noted that for every joke that worked, there were three that fell flat. So they went in and trimmed all the jokes that didn't work. 20. Brooks and the cast had so much fun making the movie, and were so upset when principal photography was almost completed, that additional scenes were written to continue shooting.

17. Cloris Leachman (who plays Frau Blücher), on NPR's "Fresh Air" in 2009, claimed that Brooks told her Blücher meant "glue" in German, hence the reason for the horse whinnies every time her character's name is said. However, this isn't true: Blücher bears no resemblance to the German word for glue ("leim"). It's a common name. The horse's terror is really meant to convey she's a frightening person. As Wilder put it, "Lord only knows what she

COME AND JOIN THE INTERNATIONAL COSTALEROS

By Paul Mutter Holy Week at Easter time (Semana Santa) is one of the most important periods in the Christian calendar. In Spain, processions depicting aspects of Jesus’ life and death are held throughout the country. Here in Torrevieja the Semana Santa processions draw crowds from as far away as Madrid to view the iconic events during this most holy of weeks. So impressive are they that they have also been awarded recognition by the Province of Alicante as being of particular tourist importance and interest.

Since 2005 members of the International community in Torrevieja have had the honour of carrying the beautiful paso of Nuestro Padre Jésus en la Oración del Huerto de los Olivos (Jesus in the Garden of Olives) in Torrevieja’s Santa Semana processions. Our members come from many different countries originally, but mostly from the United Kingdom. Some are Catholic, some Protestant and some might well confess to being of no particular church at all. Age is no bar to being a member of the cofradia and most of us are in the “advanced years” category.

Being a member of the cofradia, wearing the green and gold uniform, is both an honour and a unique opportunity for those of us coming from other countries to take part in what are surely some of the most iconic cultural and religious events in Spain. It is an experience that those of us that have taken part in will never forget. The enthusiasm and respect shown by the huge crowds who line the streets during the processions is something to behold. Before the establishment of the International Cofradia and for many years before, this particular paso had to be taken through the streets on the back of a lorry chassis; it simply was not possible to get a sufficient number of men to carry it on their shoulders. Perhaps mostly because of the average age of the costaleros involved in the cofradia we find we have to recruit new members each year to replace those who for one reason or another are unable to continue.

For 12 years we were able to find sufficient numbers to continue carrying it on our shoulders. However like several other cofradias taking part during Semana Santa getting new members was difficult and we found it impossible last year to gain sufficient members to carry the paso. We were determined though not to let everyone down and so through the ingenuity and skill of several of our members changes were made to the paso to allow us to safely push it through the streets of the town with the reduced numbers we had. We are already looking for new recruits to take part in next year’s Semana Santa processions and I can promise you that it is an experience well worth being involved in. If you are interested and to learn more please contact David McLachlan on 865 661 937 or Paul Mutter on 671 218 285. We will also have a stand at Expo Torrevieja on November 11 and 12, and hope to see you all there.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: HAPPY DAYS Happy Days ran for 11 seasons, making it one of ABC’s longest running series (The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet still holds first place). LANZAROTE OPENS EUROPE’S FIRST UNDERWATER MUSEUM

A new museum has opened its doors on the Canarian island of Lanzarote. Maybe 'on' the island is not quite true as visitors wanting to see the collection of sculptures created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor will first have to don a wetsuit and then dive 14 meters down to the seabed of Coloradas Bay, just off the coast of the town of Yaiza, in the southwest of the island. “My sculptures are a way to bring people into contact with the sea, as well as to make them more aware of the dangers our oceans face” Museo Atlántico was inaugurated on 10 January, featuring more than 300 life-size human figures by

artist Jason deCaires Taylor completes his monumental underwater sculpture work,. All photographs: Jason deCaires Taylor and CACT Lanzarote “My sculptures are a way to bring people into contact with the sea, for them to learn about the flora and fauna living there, as well as to make them more aware of the dangers our oceans face,” says Taylor. “At the same time as the figures tell a story, they help to protect the seabed,” he adds, pointing out that the materials he has used are not harmful to their environment: “We want to help coral and other species to grow, which can help repopulate the

marine biomass.” This isn’t Taylor’s first sub-aquatic venture. Around 500 of his pieces are already lying offshore in the warm waters off the coast of Cancún, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. “People who have visited our museum in the Caribbean say it was a unique experience, almost archeological,” says Taylor. “You are aware that you’re observing something that will last for generations.” “It’s no accident,” says Taylor. “We want to help protected species, which has meant encouraging tourism in other areas to avoid massification. We’ve also created a marine bota-

nical garden in the area. The scuba instructors who accompany visitors have been given some artistic training so they can serve as guides,” says José Juan Lorenzo. “The tour needs to be supervised, safe and to respect the creative essence of Taylor’s work. The sculptures tell a story, Taylor created the world’s first underwater park, located on the west coast of the Caribbean island of Grenada, which the ‘National Geographic’ describes as one of the 25 Wonders of the World. The Lanzarote collection can only be visited between November and February, depending on the weather.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST CRUISE SHIP: HARMONY OF THE SEAS

Over the last decade as ships have grown bigger and bigger, they have truly become cities at sea with a hotel onboard. Launched last year, Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas is certainly something to be experienced as the world's most expensive, biggest, heaviest, most brazen vessel of its kind. The ship combines the distinct seven-neighbourhood concept that Royal Caribbean's Oasis class of ships are known for with some of the most modern and groundbreaking vacation amenities, including the Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea with a 10-story plunge; robot bartenders at The Bionic Bar, powered by Makr Shakr; interior staterooms with virtual balconies that provide real-time views of the destinations, and VOOM – the fastest internet at sea – so that guests can stay connected, stream their favourite entertainment and share their adventures with family and friends back at home. The Harmony of the Seas, also can claim another record as home to the tallest slide and most exhilarating adventure at sea: Ultimate Abyss. The

hair-raising, 10-story slide is "possibly the most thrilling manmade adventure at sea," according to thrill engineer Professor Brendan Walker, Thrill Laboratory, U.K., director. Enlisted to identify the level of "thrill," a sudden feeling of excitement and pleasure, triggered by the Ultimate Abyss, Walker measured physical reactions of testers brave enough to accept the challenge. Royal Caribbean International's Harmony of the Seas spent her inaugural season sailing out of Barcelona and now is based in Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, FL: her permanent homeport. For additional information or to make reservations, vacationers should call their travel agent. The Harmony of the Sea in numbers: 227,000 gross tons: The weight of Harmony – 1,718 GT heavier than the current record-holder. 10 million: The number of hours it took 2,500 workers to build and fit Harmony in the STX shipyard in St Nazaire, France. £770 million: The cost to build the ship. 1,188 feet: The distance from bow to stern, 125 feet

longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower – and one foot longer than the previous record-breaking cruise ships Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas. 2,747: Total number of cabins, with room for 5,479 guests at double occupancy 18: Number of decks in total – 16 of which are for passengers, and two for staff. 7: The number of “neighbourhoods” on board – each with their own style and attractions. Take a twirl on the Boardwalk’s hand-made carousel, shop in the designer boutiques of the Royal Promenade, or stroll the leafy avenues of Central Park – complete with coffee shops, bars, and three waterslides twisting overhead. 23: Take your pick from 23 swimming pools – with three white-knuckle water slides, dubbed “The Perfect Storm”. Harmony has 2,150 tons of water in its pools, waterparks, slides, surf simulators and whirlpools. 22 knots: The average cruising speed of Harmony of the Seas. 2,300: The number of international crew members on board.

ROCK AGAINST CANCER RAISES 5,600€ FOR THE AECC

After their first fundraising campaign on behalf of the AECC in Torrevieja in 2015, Rock Against Cancer returned to the stage on Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Torrevieja. The charity concert organized by Monroe's Music Pub attracted hundreds of people to the 2015 event with the 'Rock Against Cancer', charity concert raising 3,700€ for the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the AECC, through the sale of merchandising, sweepstakes and drinks during the concerts that brought together an audience of rock lovers who enjoyed the free performances by The Rotados, Black Thunder, Déjà vu, Magnetik Surf, Los Duques, Kolted, Rebel Fire plus special guest, guitarist Santiago Campillo, founder of the band M Clan. This year's event surpassed that of 2015 as the event grows in popularity and support, helped along by the

efforts of Kjetil Hamre from Expo Torrevieja and The Local Touch Magazine. The total raised was an amazing 5.600€: 4,500€ during the event, plus another 1,100 € from "ARTISTS AGAINST CANCER" held at the Camping Florantilles Torrevieja. On behalf of the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Organizing Committee composed of Neil Wyatt (Manager Monroe's Music Pub), Kjetil Hamre (Expo Torrevieja & The Local Touch) and Ms. Janet Figueroa (Manager of Social Networks Monroe's Music Pub) the AECC expressed their deep gratitude to each and every one who made this musical event possible: Thanks also went out to local Councillors Mrs. Carmen Morate and Ms. Manuela Osuna, CIAJ monitors and Nicholas D. CAPTAIN SCARLET CELEBRATES HIS 50TH

The end of September coincides with a significant anniversary for people of a certain age, who remember an exciting new action series from the extremely talented minds of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, which first aired on 29th September 1967. ‘Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons’ followed on from a series of hugely successful programmes created by the Andersons, which included Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray and of course Thunderbirds and took their process of Supermarionation puppetry filming to even higher levels. For many readers, the Captain Scarlet series will be an important and memorable feature of our youth and will conjure up memories of many happy hours spent in front of the television, in the days when you actually had to get up off the chair to turn the channel over – thinking about it, if this had of happened whilst an episode of Captain Scarlet was on, there would probably have been an adolescent mutiny! For anyone new to this series, or wishing to reacquaint themselves with Captain Scarlet and his ongoing battles with the devious Mysterons, there are any number of dedicated websites and social media platforms that will

allow us all to become members of the Spectrum Organisation for a short while. The series was set in 2068 and was based upon hostilities between earth and a race of Martians known as the Mysterons. Following an astronaut attack on a Martian city, the Mysterons vowed to bring death and destruction to earth, as they sought to wreak a terrible vengeance. Standing in their way and protecting our planet was a specialist military force known as the Spectrum Organisation, whose command headquarters was a flying aircraft carrier known as Cloudbase. Spectrum kept the identity of their most effective agents secret by using only their code names, which were simply colours, such as Captain White and of course Captain Scarlet. The series appeared to be slightly more sinister than the earlier Anderson creations, which made it strangely appealing for many young viewers, who were transfixed by the deep voice

of the Mysteron telling mankind what hideous fate was awaiting them in the latest episode, as everyone on earth could apparently hear him. As the most capable of the Spectrum agents, Captain Scarlet was the nemesis of the Mysterons and has miraculously inherited some of their powers, specifically the ability to regenerate himself, which made him indestructible - he could also sense the presence of another Mysteron duplicate, which proved useful in combatting these devious devils. Marking the 50th Anniversary of Captain Scarlet, Corgi has announced the release of a handsome die-cast representation of the classic Spectrum Patrol Car which was used by Captain

Scarlet in his battles with the Mysterons. Only accessible to Spectrum personnel, the car was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 190mph and was powered by a gas turbine engine – using advanced construction techniques and equipped with a host of safety and detection features. Of course, for more details of this and the other action series created and produced by the Andersons, you could always spend some time visiting Corgi, the BbBC and on the official Gerry Anderson website where you will also find details of a special release of Captain Scarlet audio books to mark the 50th Anniversary.

2. Slå på kalvfonden och koka upp. Skumma. 3. Tillsätt salt, honung, skivade morötter, lagerblad och kryddpeppar. 4. Koka 15 - 20 minuter efter tryckhöjning. 5. Låt sjuda i 5 minuter.

CARAMEL APPLE BAKED BRIE By Keith Nicol

was that. A base of crisp apple slices into a Tupperware dish and this delicious sweet and savoury dessert was ready to go. But feel free to also serve with your favourite crackers, if you’d like, and/or chop up the apples to sprinkle on top with the nuts. Lots of great choices to experiment with.

I was about to head off to Ireland two weeks ago and rummaging through the fridge for a snack I came across some Brie that I knew would not last until my return. Before I left we had a small party for Thanksgiving to attend with a few friends from the USA and looking for something quick and easy to make, a quick rummage around the kitchen for a few extra ingredients and I came up with Caramel Apple Baked Brie.

Ten-Minute Caramel Apple Baked Brie Eight to Ten Servings This delicious Caramel Apple Baked Brie recipe can be ready to go from start to finish in about ten minutes, and it's the perfect sweet and savoury appetizer for a party. Prep time: One minute: cook time: nine minutes: total time: ten-minutes. Ingredients: 1 wheel Happy Farms Brie (but any wheel will do) 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

I just popped the wheel of brie on a baking sheet, sprinkled on some chopped walnuts that was also handy and baked it up in the oven until it was nice and warm and melty. And then while the Brie was baking, I chopped up a bunch of fresh apples into slices. Once it was ready to go, I drizzled some caramel sauce over it, that we'd not used since the summer, which you can find in the baking or ice cream topping section or any major store. And that

December is a busy month. We have Spanish holidays and Red Days this week and Christmas is just around the corner, and it seems like every gathering I go to includes an invitation to bring some sort of food. And during a busy month, that doesn’t need to add extra stress to the day. So if you happen to be looking for an ultra-easy appetizer to serve (or bring along!) to holiday parties this year, here's one that works for me and you might like. You need just three simple ingredients, ten minutes of your time and it's easy-peasy to prepare. I had a quick poke around the fridge and my cabinets to see what I could serve with it and found a few nice apples and thus, this delicious idea was born. This Ten-Minute Caramel Apple Baked Brie recipe is super-easy to make with just Four ingredients, and it's the perfect appetizer for any party. But since then I've expanded the theme and made something equally delicious with other fruits such as cranberries, raspberries and Kiwis. Come up with your own ideas and have fun.

1/3 cup caramel sauce, homemade or store-bought 3 apples, cored and sliced Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. Place brie on the baking sheet, and sprinkle the chopped walnuts evenly on top of the Brie. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the brie is warmed through and starts to ooze out a bit. Cut up your apples while the brie is warming. Remove from heat, and drizzle the caramel sauce on top of the Brie. Serve immediately with apples for dipping.

THE BEST WAY TO MOVE FORWARD ROBERT LANDAU Why don't things always turn out the way we'd like them to? That's a loaded question! While there are a number of ways to answer that question, here's one that you might resonate with; I believe that our path in life is never a straight shot. Rather, it's full of many twists and turns. If life were as easy as a straight shot, we wouldn't be here. The trick is how you deal with the many curves that your life's journey tends to throw you from time to time.

When you want something to happen, how do you go about making your wish a reality? Somewhere along the line you need to see and feel the end-result even though you haven't started to point yourself in that direction. Your mind is a powerful tool that you can use to great effect. It can be your best friend or your worst enemy. If things don't turn out the way you were expecting, here are some important things to remember;

totally believe that you'll receive what you're asking for and if you truly deserve and are worthy of it. So many prayers and meditations go unanswered simply because, deep down, there was a core belief that preventing the final manifestation from occurring Finally, always work at embracing life with open arms. If something doesn't work out, move on to the next adventure. You have more power than you think you do. Realize that you are here for a reason and know that life is never a straight shot. Understanding that there will indeed be some twists and turns along the way keeps you firmly on the path you were always meant to travel.

2. Acknowledge it Acknowledge that things didn't complete themselves in the best way possible and then let it go. Letting it go allows you to take the next important step.

work out the way you think they should have, you'll never move out of that space of disappointment. Remember that thoughts always turn into things. Moving on lets refresh the situation and allows you to set another goal that will have a better ending. If you're listening to an album of someone's songs and you don't like the first number, what do you do? You move on to the next. And so it is in life. You make the choice if you want to dwell on hearing the same song over and over. You also have the power to make the choice to move to the next number on the album.

3. Move on Leaving disappointment behind is one of the healthiest things you can do. It's when you choose to dwell on a negative that things can backfire. If you constantly keep thoughts of why things didn't

4. Reset Now that you've left disappointment behind, create a better version of exactly what you want to happen. Before you even start to go along the path of claiming what it is you want to happen, make sure you

1. Don't freak out! Stuff happens but it's how you choose to deal with it that makes all the difference in the world. You might not be able to change external events, but you can certainly make the choice as to how you want to react to what's happening.

WHY SWITCHING TO LED BULBS MAKES A DIFFERENCE your home. And this is truer than ever, as the price of this technology has declined and the uses for it have expanded. Even LED decorative holiday lighting can be purchased these days, giving consumers more opportunities to light their homes and lives efficiently.

It may seem like a small detail, but the way you light your home can have a big impact on the environment and your energy bills. Indeed, widespread use of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings, according to US government . Using at least 75 percent less energy and lasting 25 times longer than incandescent lighting, residential LEDs, especially ENERGY STAR-rated products, can help you significantly reduce the cost of lighting

Community efforts are helping to make sweeping change and brighten lives. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Change the World Tour,” is a national program designed to motivate consumers to purchase ENERGY STAR-certified LED bulbs that bring energy-efficient lighting to communities in need. With these kinds of efforts taking place nationwide, LED adoption in local communities is expected to continue to rise. To learn more about the campaign, visit provia. com/change. Swapping out traditional bulbs for energy-efficient alternatives is a simple home project that requires no special skills or tools, just a commitment to lowering one’s carbon footprint. Take an afternoon to make this simple swap that promises to have a long-las-

ting and major impact. Actions taken by individuals may feel small, but on a collective scale, greening your home means greening your community and the larger world.

PROPERTY STYLING

With the property market improving, sellers should be getting more for their property and finding it much easier to sell, yet many are still struggling. Real Estate Agents Nordica have been investigating this to help their buyers sell at the right price and have found that the interior styling of a property can make all the difference.

save you money and unnecessary stress. What should you do before styling? - Get your house sparkling clean and de-clutter. Simply removing excess items of furniture, books, clothes, toys etc, makes the place look much bigger, brighter and more neutral so people can imagine living there. Clear away all clutter and once clutter has gone and the place is beautifully clean, the styling can begin! What should you try to achieve with styling? - You should try to create a home which is neutral, but doesn’t lose the homely feel and become clinical. Your property should make people feel that they want to live there and imagine the amazing life they will have there.

To test the theory, they styled a property which had been on the market for over a year and sold it in just one week with its new look – at full asking price. They now have a Home Styling service, located in Nueva Andalucia on the Costa del Sol and wanted to share their insights on this new trick for selling your property, be it a home or commercial space.

Styling To Sell Top Tips • Shine a light – Lighting is essential. Try to incorporate 8 points of light in each room, light darker areas with lamps, consider brighter bulbs, light candles in the evening, pull back blinds and curtains and let as much light in as possible during the day

When does it work? – There are hundreds of examples of property styling selling houses, with identical properties which sell on the interiors alone. Often with some basic decoration, thorough cleaning and styling you don’t need to do refurbishment, so it can

• Increase the curb appeal – Make sure the exterior paths and drive are clean, ensure house numbers can be seen, plant blooming flowers and fresh greenery, mow and tend lawn, wash front windows, add a light, replace doormat • Style your dining room table to give a focus to the room: Try flowers, a fruit bowl, tea lights and place mats to make it look inviting. • Create a gender-neutral, comfortable and appealing master bedroom: Make use of space, remove personal items and clutter, dress with clean, crisp linens, a stylish bed spread/blanket and cushions which tie into colour scheme. Show off storage and make sure you’re happy for people to look inside. Aim to have 20 to 30 percent open space in each closet to give the impression of spaciousness.

What is Property Styling? – Preparing and dressing your home with furniture and accessories, moving things around and enriching the space, rather than doing building works Why does it work? - Buyers lack vision and need to be shown the property at its very best and see what to do with particular spaces and rooms. The key is that buyers need to fall in love and see themselves living in your property so they can make an emotional connection with the property and make an offer! Your home as you are living in it may not make this statement, or evoke this emotion, but with basic decoration and layout changes we can make a real difference.

• Make sure the temperature is right and make it feel like a great place all year round • Give the illusion of space - Put up mirrors to make rooms look bigger and brighter

• Think of the target market for your home and show them their ideal life: If you have the classic family home, but don’t have kids, consider creating kids’ rooms rather than an office so people are shown exactly how they could live there. • Beware of big furniture – It makes the space look tiny. • Don’t leave difficult spaces unfurnished - If you have a penthouse or loft space don’t leave it without furniture as the eye doesn’t accurately judge space without the reference of a furniture • Rearrange to create focal points and order: Arrange things in groups, e.g. replace lots of small pictures with large paintings to make a focus, or group smaller pictures together for order. Rearrange your furniture and try symmetrical arrangements and inviting areas. • Dress each room with accessories - Clear worktops in the kitchen, then add well-placed items such as coffee maker, herbs, plants, fruit etc for a sense of place and purpose

• Beware of kids’ toys and paraphernalia: everything should have its place and not alienate buyers without kids for example • Use 'extra' rooms wisely and ensure each room has a clearly defined purpose rather than just a dumping ground. By putting in a desk and good storage you can create a home office out of your junk room • Create a lifestyle people are looking for inside and out: Display accessories which give people the idea of a certain way of life, or arranging an area with an aspirational purpose; be creative

The shop is today a meeting point in the Village, and during the past year we have sold hundreds of sofas, kitchen table and chairs…We don’t have furniture in the shop for long, it sells out quickly.

SPOOKY SONG SING-ALONG

By Keith Nicol

Blue Öyster Cult, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” Blue Öyster Cult's death song became an instant rock

It's Halloweek, as Halloween murfs into Guy Fawkes Night and with it an opportunity to sing and dance along to any number of guilty pleasures. Need some music for your Halloween Party or to put into your iPod? Here are a few songs that you may wish to add to your spooky playlist this Halloween. And so in no particular order, after Thriller of course, here's a few choices for a memorable weekend that stretches through the weekend. Michael Jackson, “Thriller” “I’m not like other guys,” Michael tells his girl at the beginning of the greatest music video ever made. Take David Seville, “Witch Doctor” Staying with the silly songs: this song is the story of a gentleman seeking some help from a witch doctor in order to impress a woman he has fallen in love with. The wise witch doctor offers some words of advice in order to help the gentleman win the woman's heart by saying, "Oo ee, oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang." It was said to be a call for love. the King of Pop, add a rapping 71-year-old Vincent Price: throw in some spooky background music: and add some great dance steps and you have the most popular Halloween music track of all time. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “Time Warp” If you want to camp it up over Halloween you can't ignore the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And there

are lots of great tracks to choose from, from Sweet Transvestite to Hot Patootie and although it might be a musical, it’s still a spooky essential. No self-respecting Halloweenie hasn’t experienced the toast-tossing, costume-clad, line-ad-libbing extravaganza at least once. And with a jump to the left plus a step to the right, the all time party favourite is the “Time Warp”. Warren Zevon, “Werewolves of London” Warren Zevon’s silly-witty 1978 novelty hit about everyday monsters has shades of black comedy about it as it pokes fun at the banality of horror—“I saw a werewolf drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic’s / And his hair was perfect”—but the droll wolf-call refrain (“a-hooooooooo!”) makes you want to give up and join the pack.

Bobby “Boris” Pickett, “Monster Mash” Probably the only time of year you'll ever here this played on the radio is over Halloween. The perennial holiday favourite was released in 1962, and has been clawing its way out of the grave every year since. For some reason, some of the biggest names in rock and roll have also covered this, including: the Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Vincent Price, Alvin and the Chip-

classic when it came out in 1976, and has been a staple of horror culture ever since. Santana, “Black Magic Woman” Although this was a hit for Santana, this song is actually a cover of a 1968 Fleetwood Mac song that hit UK #37. For this song's solo, Santana played across the Latin rhythm on his Gibson Les Paul Special through the amp and rode the volume knob throughout the track to add sustain and distortion as required. Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Bad Moon Rising” In Rolling Stone issue 6 49, Joh n Fogerty explained that the lyrics were inspired by a movie called The Devil And Daniel Webster, in which a hurricane wipes out most of a town. Eagles, “WITCHY Woman” Leadon and Henley wrote this about a number of women they had met. It is not meant to portray the woman as devilish, but as more of a seductress.

munks, the Smashing Pumpkins and The Misfits, and the list goes on and on... Who the Crypt Kicker Five were we will probably never know. Echo and the Bunnymen, “People are Strange” While the original may have been by the Doors, we're choosing Echo and the Bunnymen’s 1987 version of this song partly because this cover soundtracked the cult ’80s vampire movie 'The Lost Boys'

Huey Lewis actually sued Parker over the song’s similarity to his “I Want a New Drug,” probably because he was jealous of how much better “Ghostbusters” is. Happy Haunting

Ray Parker Jr., “Ghostbusters”

AUTUMN CAR SENSE

It's a beautiful Autumn day outside. You decide to go to the beach, out for lunch, a quick coffee at a side walk cafe, a spot of shopping and the list goes on and on. Be it your own car or an unfamiliar hire car, please keep your wits about you when you are driving, locking, entering, if are approached by stranger, simply parking your car or leaving it unattended.

and you nip into a roadside cafe for a coffee and to use the facilities, park where you can keep your eye on your car. At the shops, meanwhile, try to park close to the main entrance and in amongst other cars – thieves are more likely to strike a car that’s on its own at the end of a car park than one that’s mixed in with all the rest, where other shoppers are regularly walking past. Hide your belongings Sounds like an obvious one, doesn’t it? But you’d be amazed how many people don’t bother. Satnav systems are the most obvious trinkets that get left on display, but mobile phones, keys, wallets and cash are also theft magnets.

Your car, or possibly the objects left inside it, are an object of desire for many criminals. Whether it’s the car itself or the valuables within it, your car is as much a target for thieves as it ever was. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, there were almost 358,000 reported instances of thefts from or of a motor vehicle in 2014, with at least 30,000 not being investigated. A new survey shows that thieves are continuing to target prestige vehicles, such as the Range Rover, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, BMW and other top marques, and there’s much more you can do to keep your car safe than just pressing the button on your car’s remote and walking away. Check it’s locked, and check again You can hear the central locking activating in most modern cars. The sound it makes is normally a heavy-sounding clunk or click. So stay close and listen as you press the remote button to lock your car, and make sure you hear the central locking activate. Many modern cars also feature a visual signal, in the form of flashing indicators. If yours is set up like this, make sure those indicators do indeed flash too. But, why not just double check before you walk away. Don't rely on the technology to do the job. Just try your door handle before you walk away for that peace of mind. It takes but a couple of seconds to do so. Much better than coming back to an empty car parking space. Some thieves use remote jammers that can stop you locking your car so why not just double check. Park in the right place You’re obviously going to feel nervous about leaving your car in a dodgy-looking area, but car crime can be a problem in the nicest parts of town. Wherever you park your car, do your best to find somewhere that’s well lit. If you have the option to park under a street lamp, do so, even during the day - if your car’s left there longer than you’re expecting, it’ll be lit when darkness falls. If you are on a Motorway,

Don’t leave your car running unattended It might seem like you’ll be away from the car for such a short time that it’s not worth turning the engine off – perhaps you’re just popping into a shop, or are dashing into the house to pick up something you left behind. But an opportunist thief only needs a couple of seconds to have your pride and joy away. And if your car’s stolen while it’s been left running like this, your insurance will be invalidated – so not only will you go through the hassle and stress of losing your car, but you won’t get any payout.

Never leave ignition keys in the car at petrol stations or to run into a shop. Never leave the engine running and then exit the car At night, park your car under a street light or in a locked garage. When you park in a car park, try to choose one with an attendant, or/and one that is well lit and covered by CCTV. Never leave behind your mobile phone or Sat Nav in the car. Always take it with you. Only open windows half way if someone asks you to roll down the window, to stop them reaching inside the car. Keep the doors locked at all times. Make sure the hatch is locked too. Carry a charged old mobile phone in your car. In case of emergency all mobiles can still access the emergency services. Do not keep your car documents in the glove box. It’s the first place that thieves will look. At home, always make sure your keys are kept out of sight, such as in a discreet cupboard or drawer. Make sure someone at your destination knows the route you are taking, that they are aware of the time when you expect to leave and when you expect to arrive. Try to avoid badly lit or quiet roads at night.

Top ten cars most frequently stolen and recovered in the UK in 2015 Range Rover Sport BMW X5 Range Rover Vogue Mercedes C-class BMW 3-series Mercedes C63 AMG BMW 5-series Audi RS4 Audi Q7 Range Rover Autobiography Here are few words of advice and stay safe and secure, no matter where you are driving your car from The Local Touch. Lock your doors, boot and roll up windows when driving or leaving your car. Don’t leave handbags in the front or back seats within view. Put all valuables in the boot.

Never leave cash, credit cards, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the vehicle. If this is unavoidable, make sure they are well hidden before you begin your journey – thieves often watch you parking. At motorway service stations, park your car where you can keep an eye on it from the cafe. If someone attempts to steal your car during busy periods while you are in it, sound your horn and flash your lights to attract attention. If detachable, always take the radio faceplate with you If using a remote wireless central locking system, always double check that the doors have locked by trying one of them before leaving your car unattended. Include ICE (In Case of Emergency) ACE numbers both in your mobile and on a piece of paper in your car/bike. Report all thefts or lost items to the Police. Stay safe and have a great autumn motoring.

THRILLING FACTS ABOUT 'THRILLER' merly of the funk band Heatwave, also wrote "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady in My Life" for Thriller (and earlier, had penned "Rock with You" and "Off the Wall" for Jackson).

By Keith Nicol There are not too many specific points in time that I can pinpoint exactly where I was, that were not personal events. The death of Elvis, Tommy Copper live on stage and Princess Diana come to mind: Manchester United winning the European Cup in 1968 and 1999: England winning the World Cup in 1966 and a few others. Musically, apart from Elvis 1968 Comeback Special and Relax from Frankie goes to Hollywood; it has to be Thriller. It was December 2nd, 1983 and for weeks that date had been in the diary as the fledging broadcaster MTV's first major premier event since starting on Cable TV on August 1st 1981, was a real guilty pleasure for most of us. That night I was sitting comfortably in the living room of Hilda and Lemuel Keith, in Knoxville, Tennessee along with their Daughter Debbie, who was sister to actor David Keith (An Officer And A Gentleman) and country and western singer Teresa Williams. We dimmed the lights, sat back, turned up the volume and for the next 14 minutes watched the Music Video that would forever change the way that future videos would be produced. It was played a number of times during the evening and we just watched it and watched it until it was time for bed. And so with Halloween just around the corner lets have a look at some of the thrilling facts behind and about Michael Jackson and the zombies on the set of 'Thriller'. Director John Landis (The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London) extended the track — the seventh and final single released from the Thriller album — into a nearly 14-minute-long musical horror film, letting Michael indulge his monster-movie fantasies. It got saturation play on MTV and has been seen more than 149 million times on YouTube. J The video cost half-a-million dollars; at the time, it was the most expensive video ever made. Before songwriter Rod Temperton came up with "Thriller," Michael Jackson's working title for the album was Starlight. Temperton, a British native for-

"In adolescence, youngsters begin to grow hair in unexpected places and parts of their anatomy swell and grow," director John Landis explained, regading the role of the werewolf metaphor in cinematic history. "Everyone experiences these physical transformations in their bodies and new, unfamiliar, sexual thoughts in their minds. No wonder we readily accept the concept of a literal metamorphosis." In other words, undergoing a lycanthropic transformation was a safe way for Michael Jackson to experiment with puberty. Jackson's "Thriller" costar, former Playboy Playmate Ola Ray, also appeared on Cheers and in Beverly Hills Cop II, but her only other notable music video was "Give Me the Night" by George Benson (a single also written by Rod Temperton and produced by Quincy Jones!), on a date with Benson that involves hot dogs and champagne. That video's biggest special effect: Benson playing guitar on roller-skates.

Hollywood legend Fred Astaire, a fan of Jackson's dancing (Jackson personally taught him to moonwalk), attended a "Thriller" rehearsal. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who edited Jackson's Moonwalk autobiography, logged some serious hours: When they were filming at 3 A.M. in a bad neighbourhood in east Los Angeles, she was hanging out in Jackson's Winnebago. Choreographer Michael Peters also did the epic dance sequences in Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" and in Jackson's "Beat It" video (where he played one of the gang leaders — the one dressed in white, with sunglasses and a mustache). He won a Tony for his work on Dreamgirls and died of AIDS in 1994, at just 46 years old. The largest number of people doing the "Thriller" zombie-dance routine, according to the Guinness Book of World Records: "13,597 participants in an event organised by the Instituto de la Juventud del Gobierno del Distrito Federal at the Monumento a la Revolucion, Mexico City, Mexico, on 29 August 2009." When horror-movie legend Vincent Price recorded

his spoken word, he did a whole verse that got cut: "The demons squeal in sheer delight / It's you they spy, so plump, so right / For though the groove is hard to beat / Yet still you stand with frozen feet / You try to run, you try to scream / But no more sun you'll ever see / For evil reaches from the crypt / To crush you in its icy grip." “Thriller” is also the is the most-downloaded Halloween-themed hit of all-time, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan. A black-and-red calfskin jacket worn by Jackson in the song's video was bought by Milton Verret, a Texas commodities trader at an auction in California for $1.8 million in June 2011. Jackson wore the jacket in the scene where a group of zombies rise from their graves and break into a dance routine. The version of the song in the video is different from the one on the album, which you need to account for if you're planning to stage a Thriller Dance. On the album, the song begins with a series of spooky sound effects that don't lend themselves to dancing. Editing the song for the video was a challenge, since producer Quincy Jones wouldn't release the master tapes. In the book I Want My MTV, John Landis explains how they got around this restriction. "The song was five minutes long, and I needed it to be 12 minutes for the video," he said. "So Michael and I went to the recording studio at three in the morning. We walked past the guard - 'Hi, Michael.' 'Hi' - put the tracks in a big suitcase and walked out with them. Then we drove across Hollywood, duped them, and put them back." The video won for Best Performance Video, Best Choreography, and Viewers Choice at the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. The show was hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler. Thriller is by far the best selling album in the world. In the United States, it was overtaken by The Eagles Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, but reclaimed the title after Jackson's death. As Michael Jackson said at the end of the mini-movie: “What’s the problem?” Thank goodness, it was all a dream. Or was it? Cue Vincent Price’s evil laugh.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE HITS FIVE YEARS OF UK PRODUCTION The world’s most recognisable luxury compact SUV celebrated its sixth birthday in July. So popular is the SUV that every 170 seconds a Range Rover Evoque is produced in the UK, with more than half a million built since 4 July 2011. Range Rover Evoque accounted for one in four Land Rover sales in 2015.

The world’s most recognisable and luxurious compact SUV, the Range Rover Evoque, reached a historic milestone on July 4th 2016, as it celebrated its fifth year of production at Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced manufacturing facility near Liverpool, UK. With over half a million sold globally in more than 180 countries since 2011, the Range Rover Evoque – driven everywhere from Madrid to Manila – is Land Rover’s greatest sales success story. It is also Land Rover’s most efficient model, thanks to its British-built Ingenium engines which offer class-leading CO2 emissions of just 109g/km and impressive fuel consumption of 68mpg. The Range Rover Evoque has become a non-stop British success with 24-hour production at the Halewood plant. Since the first Evoque rolled off the production line, sales have increased five-fold from just over 22,000 in 2011 to more than 108,000 in 2015. At the same time, the workforce has also trebled to more than 4,000, with 1,500 recruited specifically to support the launch of this record-breaking vehicle in 2011. Over the past five years, employees have clocked up more than three million night-shift hours, consuming 668,000 cups of coffee, half a million eggs

and 125,000 slices of toast to keep energy levels up during an eight hour shift. A total of 1.7 billion Evoque parts have been fitted in the Trim and Final assembly area, travelling over 2.5 million miles of conveyor system. Jaguar Land Rover associate Ash Milburn joined Halewood shortly after the launch of the Evoque: “I started as an Apprentice at a very exciting time for the company. The Range Rover Evoque has been hugely successful; it has brought a lot of positive changes to Halewood and has contributed immensely to the success of Jaguar Land Rover, as well as boosting the whole UK automotive industry,” he said. Ross Bolton, Paint Shop Production Leader, said: “I started in February 2011 so I have witnessed the transformation in the factory that Evoque has brought with it. I have since been promoted to a Production Leader and I am grateful to the company for this amazing opportunity. I am looking forward to continuing to support the business and helping us drive our success forward into the future.” In 2016, Halewood began building a new soft-top member of the Evoque family, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible; the world’s first luxury SUV convertible and another first for Land Rover. Richard Else, Jaguar Land Rover Halewood Operations Director, said: “During my 25 years at Jaguar Land Rover it has been the last five years that have been the most eventful, exciting and rewarding. The impact which Evoque has made to our business and to Halewood is nothing short of transformation-

al. I am immensely proud of the Halewood team; their pride, passion and commitment to getting the job done and going above and beyond is second to none.” Globally, the Evoque has picked up nearly 200 awards over the last five years. Halewood Operations has also picked 11 regional business awards and recently won its first national award as it took home the ‘UK Manufacturer of the Year’ crown at the Insider MADE in the UK Manufacturing Awards 2016.

Jaguar Land Rover has invested £600 million at the Halewood plant since 2010 to support the Range Rover Evoque (2011), Land Rover Discovery Sport (2014) and the Evoque Convertible (2016). The Evoque is also the fastest selling Land Rover of all time, accounting for one in four Land Rovers sold around the world in 2015. Local production also started in China in 2015, and more recently, announced in Brazil. In the UK, the Range Rover Evoque is available from £30,600 on the road for the 2.0 litre eD4 six speed manual. LOCAL TOUCH'S MAN'S MAN: SIR SEAN CONNERY

Sean Connery is best known for portraying the character James Bond, starring in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983. In 1988, Connery won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Untouchables (1987). His film career also includes such films as Marnie (1964), The Name of the Rose (1986), the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade(1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), DragonHeart (1996) and The Rock (1996). Connery has been polled as "The Greatest Living Scot" and "Scotland's Greatest Living National Treasure". In 1989, he was proclaimed "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine, and in 1999, at age 69, he was voted "Sexiest Man of the Century".

From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), and You Only Live Twice (1967) - then appeared again as Bond in Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Never Say Never Again (1983). All seven films were commercially successful. James Bond, as portrayed by Connery, was selected as the third-greatest hero in cinema history by the American Film Institute. James Bond's creator, Ian Fleming, originally doubted Connery's casting, saying, "He's not what I envisioned of James Bond looks", and "I'm looking for Commander Bond and not an overgrown stunt-man," adding that Connery (muscular, 6' 2", and a Scot) was unrefined. Fleming's girlfriend told him that Connery had the requisite sexual charisma, and Fleming changed his mind after the successful Dr. No (1962) premiere.

He was voted People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1989. He has two small tattoos on his right arm. One says "Scotland forever", the other "Mum and Dad." He got them when he enlisted in the Royal Navy at the age of 16. Formerly worked as a coffin polisher, milk delivery man and bricklayer. Major contributor to the Scottish National Party (SNP). Voted 'Sexiest Man of the Century' by People Magazine. [1999]

Sean married actress Diane Cilento in 1962 and they had a son, Jason Connery, born on January 11, 1963. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. In 1975 he married Micheline Roquebrune and they have stayed married, they have no children together. Sean Connery Trivia Ranked #14 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list. [October 1997]

Thomas Sean Connery was born on August 25, 1930 in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland. He is of Irish and Scottish descent. At the age of 23, he had a choice between becoming a professional footballer or an actor, and even though he showed much promise in the sport, he chose acting and said it was one of his more intelligent moves. Connery's breakthrough came in the role of secret agent James Bond. He was reluctant to commit to a film series, but understood that if the films succeeded his career would greatly benefit. He played the character in the first five Bond films: Dr. No (1962),

Said in an interview that during the filming of Never Say Never Again (1983), he was taking martial arts lessons and in the process angered the instructor who in turn broke his wrist. Connery stayed with the wrist broken for a number of years thinking it was only a minor pain... the instructor was Steven Seagal. Used to live in Marbella, Spain, near a golf course where he played daily when not filming. He left following disagreements with the local press, and now resides in the Bahamas where he plays golf much less frequently.

In 1953, he entered the Mr. Universe contest, finishing third in the tall man's division.

He was made a Knight Bachelor in the 2000 Queen's Millennium Honours List for his services to Film Drama. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in

10 MONSTROUS FRANKENSTEIN FACTS tle Frankenstein on a journey up the Rhine River.

to think,” she said. In the introduction to the 1831 edition of Frankenstein, she described the vision as follows:

Frankenstein, the story of a mad scientist who brings the dead back to life, only to discover that he has created a monster, continues to be one of our everlasting horror stories. 1. 'Frankenstein' was written by a teenager. Mary Shelley’s teenage years were eventful, to say the least. At age 16, she ran away with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Over the next two years, she gave birth to two children. In 1816, the couple traveled to Switzerland and visited Lord Byron at Villa Diodati. While there, 18-year-old Mary started writing Frankenstein. It was published in 1818, when she was 20 years old. 2. The novel came out of a ghost story competition. The Shelleys visited Switzerland during the “year without a summer.” The eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia had caused severe climate abnormalities and a lot of rain. Stuck inside, the group read ghost stories from the book Fantasmagoriana. It was then that Lord Byron proposed that they have a competition to see who could come up with the best ghost story: Byron, Mary, Percy, or the physician John Polidori. Mary won. 3. Mary said she got the idea from a dream. At first, Mary had writer’s block, unable to come up with a good idea for a ghost story. Then she had a waking dream—“I did not sleep, nor could I be said

“I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life. … He sleeps; but he is awakened; he opens his eyes; behold, the horrid thing stands at his bedside, opening his curtains and looking on him with yellow, watery, but speculative eyes.” Mary opened her eyes and realized she’d found her story. “What terrified me will terrify others,” she thought. She began working on it the next day.

4. Mary wrote 'Frankenstein' in the shadow of tragedy. Before she started Frankenstein, Mary gave birth to a daughter, Clara, who died six weeks later. (In fact, only one of Mary’s four children lived to adulthood.) 5. Frankenstein was the name of the scientist, not the monster. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein is the scientist. The monster remains unnamed and is referred to as "monster," “creature,” "demon," and "it.” 6. The novel shares its name with a castle. Mary said she made up the name "Frankenstein." However, Frankenstein is a German name that means Stone of the Franks. What’s more, historian Radu Florescu claimed that the Shelleys visited Cas-

7. Many thought Percy Shelley wrote the work. Frankenstein was first published anonymously. It was dedicated to William Godwin, Mary’s father, and Percy Shelley wrote the preface. Because of these connections, many assumed that Percy Shelley was the author. 8. The book was originally slammed by critics. When Frankenstein came out in 1818, many critics bashed it. “What a tissue of horrible and disgusting absurdity this work presents,” John Crocker, of the Quarterly Review, wrote. But gothic novels were all the rage, and Frankenstein soon gained readers. In 1823, a play titled "Presumption; or The Fate of Frankenstein" cemented the story’s popularity. In 1831, a new version of the book was published, this time under Mary’s name. 9. 'Frankenstein' was considered the first science fiction novel. In penning her gothic novel, Shelley was writing the first major science fiction novel, as well as inventing the concept of the “mad scientist” and helping establish what would become horror fiction. The influence of the book in popular culture is so huge that the term “Frankenstein” has entered common speech to mean something unnatural and horrendous. 10. Thomas Edison adapted the story for film. In 1910, Thomas Edison made a one-reel, 15-minute film of Frankenstein, one of the first horror movies ever made. It was thought lost until it was rediscovered in the 1950s.

CULTURAL SOCIETY CASINO OF TORREVIEJA

On New Year's Day 2017, one of Torrevieja's classic attractions, The Casino, celebrated its 150 anniversary. While the connotation of the word 'Casino' is of a gambling attraction, in Spain the first casinos were places for social activities and public rooms of music and dance. The same format appeared in England in the eighteenth century, expanding its focus in the mid nineteenth century, becoming a club and then becoming a place more associated with fun with gambling. One of the earliest and most popular was in Belgium in LiĂŠja, on a site called Redoute, adding games in their program in 1763. Naturally these sites were also at other places but we consider Redoute as the first casino. What today is called "Cultural Society Casino of Torrevieja" was founded on January 1, 1867 under the name of "Casino of Torrevieja" changing its

name a few months later the name "Casino Numancia". The local office of the company was located in the Paseo de Vista Alegre, facing the sea, in the same place where it has remains today. This society was intended to strengthen social relations, providing comfort and pleasant entertainment, provide lectures on greater enlightenment, morality, habits and provide a good education for members plus, when their funds permitted, doing charitable acts. On May 11, 1884, in the presence of an impressive crowd, the first railway came to Torrevieja. The guest list on opening day included a number of important people including the Prime Minister, Canovas del Castillo. The Casino was becoming the meeting place of the local bourgeoisie, most of the rich shipowners and merchants who made up that elegant society. In late 1895, because the building

did not meet up to all the necessary conditions, the demolition of the original took place and the building you see today was built on the same site. On August 10, 1896, along with great pomp and circumstance, the opening of the 'new' Casino took place. The building, now had two floors and was considered as the best in its class. Art Nouveau towered majestically over the sea just a few meters from its façade. When the Casino of Torrevieja opened, the town had no more than 8,000 inhabitants, among which was an influential and powerful business class of sailing ship operators, shippers and traders. The Casino of Torrevieja was destined to become a major exponent of decorative modernism. In those years, Spain was a poor country and the bourgeoisie of Torrevieja were of course not

51 of the same standing as Paris, or Barcelona, although the fishing village was on a par with other local cities such as Orihuela, Alcoy, Novelda, Alicante, Murcia. The Casino was lavishly decorated and furnished, with a library and billiard room on the top floor and an area downstairs for dances, chatting and, of course, cards and other games of chance. The walls of the casino have served the town for almost 150 years and continue to host all kinds of festive and social activities such as concerts, dances and exhibitions, with the upstairs area only open to members and honoured guests. A couple of hundred yards to the south of the Casino you will find Eras De La Sal hidden in plain sight behind a couple of huge wooden doors, and

close to the Habaneras Fountain. Eras de la Sal is a fine example of Spanish industrial architecture from the 18th century. It served as a storehouse and wharf for salt from 1777 until 1958. Now it has become one of the most authentic landmarks in Torrevieja and is a prime example of the restoration project that has brought back its former splendour, reminding us of the hard work of so many generations of “Torrevejenses. Inside we should highlight the recovery of the so-called “Caballete", the wooden platform, from which the salt was loaded on ships after being brought from the factory next to the lagoon of Torrevieja on trolleys. It is hoped that in the near future the Museum of Sea and Salt will have its permanent location in this

area. This structure, which rotted away at the beginning of the 70s, has been rebuilt as a true replica using very similar wood and siting it on the exact spot of the original. In one of its patios there is a unique stage called 'tornavoz' where Torrevieja's annual International Habaneras and Poliphony Competition is held. The Eras de la Sal is considered in musical circles as the temple or cathedral of the Habanera (a type of song originally from Havana). Eras de la Sal Historic Monuments reflect a huge part of the history of Torrevieja. It was restored in 1997, with the rebuilding of the existing wooden structure, including the loading trestle and the hopper for tipping the salt into the barges.

IS AGE JUST A NUMBER?

How is it that yesterday's 50 is today's 40, and yesterday's 40, today's 30? How come people are starting to look much younger than they actually are? When I was growing up, my parents and many of their friends and the parents of my friends who were 30 then, looked older than many of my friends who are now over 50. It's not all that mysterious, though. There are two major factors. A lot of the adults I knew as a kid were heavy smokers, and when summer rolled around, we spent a great deal of time in the sun; both of which are hard on the skin. Apart from that, with the advent of better education, different food and lifestyle choices, plus generations who want to stay fitter and more active, the mortality tables are showing people living about 10 years longer than they did 60 years ago, so that's giving them a lot. So there is a difference that is objective, measurable and not just a figment of our imagination. And it's easy to be a cynic when we see someone over fifty and just assume they have the money to spend on a good plastic surgeon, because not all celebrities want to go under the knife. So here are a few Beauty Tips From Celebs Over 50. Julianne Moore, December 3, 1960 (age 56) At 56, Julianne Moore bucks the idea that women of a certain age need to have short hair. Her long locks help keep her waves in check. She told Redbook in 2014, “One of the reasons I wear my hair long now is that the weight helps keep it smooth.” As for her equally smooth skin? “Sunscreen is my number-one thing,” she said. “I’ve worn it every day since I was 23.” Demi Moore, November 11, 1962 (age 54) T h e 5 4 -y e a r- o l d actress and model attributes her youthful skin to one thing: moisturiser. “I moisturise, moisturise, moisturise,” Moore told Marie Claire. “No matter how late it is, when I get home, I take the time to clean and moisturise my face. I’m a big believer in that if you focus on good skin care, you really won’t need a lot of makeup.”

Iman, 25 July 1955 (age 62) Although former supermodel Iman claims that genetics are responsible for her ageing so beautifully, her attention to her skincare and exercise regimen certainly help. Iman makes sure to clean and moisturise her face twice a day and never skips sunscreen. She uses SK-II Facial Treatment Cleanser, according to Harper’s Bazaar, and does yoga and Pilates. “Cardio is the most important thing,” she told The Telegraph. Rita Moreno, December 11, 1931 (age 85) Rita Moreno is best k n ow n f o r p l a ying Anita in West Side Story, and the 85-year-old actress is the only Latina to win an Emmy, a Tony, a Grammy, and an Oscar. Moreno told Fox News Magazine that she keeps her skin healthy thanks to exfoliating every day for years. She also shared some makeup tips: She recommends applying foundation with a brush and finishing with a sponge if you need to. And remember to blend well. “You always see the foundation end at the chin. It has to go further down. The décolleté area,” she said. Tina Turner, November 26, 1939 (age 77) Age-defying singer Tina Turner has kept her famous legs looking fabulous over the years. The 77-year-old told the Mirror in 2009 that her not-so-secret secret to looking great - “The main reason I’ve stayed looking good is that I’ve spent 40 years doing the most intensive stage workouts ever,” she said. "I'm holding together just fine, but I'm not doing it with no effort," Welch said, as per The Examiner. "I'm doing my yoga every day — an hour-and-a-half of that. I have a very exciting life and to enjoy it I have to keep in shape and look as good as I can. It's a trade-off," the now 75-year-old actress said. "The body beautiful is not a top priority anymore. Welch also admitted that she is a fitness fanatic whose diet is free of sugar, salt, wheat, and caffeine. The actress, who is also now the face of wig company HAIRuWEAR, was known as the iconic deer-skin bikini clad Loana in the 1966 film One Million Years B.C., landing her title as sex symbol soon thereafter. Welch, who now considers herself as a "faded sex symbol" also went on to be named by Empire magazine as one of the "100 Sexiest Stars in Film History" and Men's Health's "Hottest Women of All Time" list.
