OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD MISSION “Let the children come to Me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:14, ESV HISTORY In the summer of 1993, Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham received a call from a man in England asking if he’d be willing to fill shoeboxes with gifts for children in war-torn Bosnia. Franklin agreed, but figured Christmas was months away. He forgot about the promise until he received a call back around Thanksgiving asking about the gifts. Franklin asked his friend the late Pastor Ross Rhoads of Calvary Church of Charlotte to see if he could help with the need. A Sunday shortly afterward, Pastor Rhoads demonstrated for his congregation how to fill a shoebox with simple gifts and encouraged them to include a letter to the child as well. Within weeks, the church had 11,000 shoeboxes lining their hallways. Due to their generosity and additional gifts from Canada, Samaritan’s Purse sent 28,000 shoebox gifts to children in the Balkans that Christmas. Every year since, Samaritan’s Purse has collected shoebox gifts filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for children around the world. Since 1993, more than 209 million children in more than 170 countries and territories have received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. The project delivers not only the joy of what, for many kids, is their first gift ever, but also gives them a tangible expression of God’s love. Tens of thousands of volunteers from local churches around the world partner with us to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ at festive outreach events where children are surprised with these shoebox gifts Boxes and pamphlets can be obtained from store displays at Red Apple, Your Dollar Store with More, and The Real Canadian Wholesale Club. 1. I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I? This riddle relies on tricking you into thinking about ears and a mouth. You get a tiny hint about wind to encourage you to think broadly and avoid the literal. 2. You measure my life in hours and I serve you by expiring. I’m quick when I’m thin and slow when I’m fat. The wind is my enemy. This one wants to trip you up by hitting you with details from every angle. The big hint comes at the end with the wind. What does wind threaten most? You have to stretch your brain to come up with something tiny and unexpected. 3. I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I? This riddle aims to confuse you and get you to focus on the things that are missing: the houses, trees, and fish. You might guess you need to think about something inanimate. 4. What is seen in the middle of March and April that can’t be seen at the beginning or end of either month? This riddle works by trying to get you to think about the weather or holidays or other events linked to a calendar. To get this one right you actually need to get super literal. 5. You see a boat filled with people. It has not sunk, but when you look again you don’t see a single person on the boat. Why? Hard riddles like this are tricky because they seem to invite straightforward, logical thinking. You may come up with answers like “they all went below deck” or “jumped overboard.” But you need to focus on the word “single” and think about its other meanings. 6. What word in the English language does the following: The first two letters signify a male, the first three letters signify a female, the first four letters signify a great, while the entire world signifies a great woman. What is the word? This is hard because it gets you thinking about gender and the ways they’re different. You have to think of one word that holds the others. It’s easy when you think about it!

Method 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss the squash and carrots with 1 tablespoon olive oil, then arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast for 30-40 minutes until very tender.
2. Heat the remaining olive oil over medium heat in a large soup pan. Add the onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic, nutmeg, cooked butternut squash and carrots and cook for 1-2 minutes. 3. Add in the vegetable broth and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to let the flavors come together. 4. Place in a blender and purée until very smooth and creamy. Place soup back in the saucepan and add in the cream. Serve immediately. 17

GEROW ISLAND NEWS EDITOR AND CHIEF TRAVELS ABROAD Local grade 9 student, Rheanna Leith was chosen to represent Canada for expo sciences international in Puebla Mexico October 20-27, 2023. She was a Canada wide science fair finalist in 2022 with her project from our SD 91. This happens every two years up to 60 countries from around the world and over 1000 students are chosen to attend. There is an application process for selecting the team members. Rheanna was one of 30 Canadian team participants. They also came home with the most prestigious award, ESI, Best Delegation award. She has always wanted to spread her message to the world and travel abroad while doing so. This was an amazing opportunity, and she hopes it will inspire many others to pursue science and their dreams.

It is always worth listening to or trying to understand both opposing perspectives of ANY given situation. “If you are not open to other ideas and perspectives, it is difficult to see all of the factors that contribute to problems or come up with effective solutions. In an increasingly polarized world, being able to step outside your comfort zone and consider other perspectives and ideas is important.”

The Son writes back, "Dad don't even think of digging the field because that's where I buried all the money I stole." The following Day the Son wrote again, 'Now plant your Potatoes dad, it's the best I can do from here.
