Amending your Garden Bed
Amending garden beds replenishes nutrients and organic matter that plants deplete during the growing season. The most effective approach is to top dress your beds with one to two inches of high-quality compost, aged manure, or worm castings. This method restores vital nutrients without disturbing the existing soil ecosystem.
What to Add
Compost & Manure: The gold standard for soil structure and fertility.
Worm Castings: An excellent source of slow-release, natural nutrients.
Shredded Leaves & Mulch: Breaks down slowly to provide carbon and retain moisture.
There’s truly something for everyone!

Craft Beer Has Arrived!
We’re now pouring brews from Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse (Terrace, BC):
Munich Lager • Friar House Lager • West Point Ale
Come give them a try your taste buds will thank you!
How to Apply
Clear the Bed: Remove dead vegetation, diseased plants, or thick stems that take a long time to decompose.
Loosen the Soil: Instead of deep tilling, lightly aerate the soil using a broadfork or garden fork.
Top Dress: Spread your compost or organic matter evenly over the surface. Let earthworms and soil organisms pull the amendments down naturally.
Mulch: Cover the bed with a \(5 \text{ cm}\) layer of clean straw, shredded leaves, or bark mulch to prevent moisture loss and suppress weeds.
When to Amend
Aim to amend your beds twice a year:
Early Spring: A few weeks before planting your summer crops.
Early Fall: Just before planting cool-season crops.
