Rose Langley
Iwould really like to be a jolly camper, keenly pitching my tent, head torch at the ready, and a hearty sense of self-reliance and peace with the great outdoors. After all, I know how happy it makes my whole family when we get out of the house and spend time in nature, and the ability to pack up and head out for a mini break whenever we want is appealing. But I am embarrassed to admit that I have only camped once since having children: a trip to Wales, which started badly, went downhill from there and ended three days early. This was due to a number of factors: the huge group of friends having a reunion on the same campsite, their thirty or so kids who played cops and robbers until midnight, falling literally onto our heads as they repeatedly tripped over our guy ropes while we tried to sleep. It could have been the 70’s frame tent that I insisted we bought - the bedroom walls sagged in claustrophobically and there was no floor in the living area so the spiders and other critters used it as their club house. And then there was the inevitable lack of sleep, which left us all grumpy and weakened to the point that a meltdown in Pembroke Castle broke the camel’s back, leading us to throw in the towel and head for home.
the bedroom walls sagged in claustrophobically and there was no floor in the living area
Yet I would still like to be a jolly camper. Proof of this comes in the volume of research I
have conducted into the ultimate camping set-up: do they have blackout fabric so the toddler will sleep? Is poly-cotton as breathable as canvas? What is the comfiest blow-up bed? And where can we camp without any significant hoards of rampaging cops and robbers stumbling onto our exhausted heads? You may wonder why I bother, but my image of dappled morning light, peaceful birdsong and the thought of leaving the over-connectivity of everyday life behind, all draw me back to my fantasies of a life under canvas. But, and there is a big but, I fear that I may never actually become the well-rounded camper of my imagination. I like predictability, well-slept kids and not having to walk through a wet field to use the toilet. I am not, I fear, in any way a free spirit, nor someone who can roll with the punches if, say, it rained all day. So I have a plan, a new focus for my obsessive research, and maybe an answer to the problem of cheap, regular time away in the sticks; much like Toad from Wind in the Willows, I think maybe a caravan is the thing. Of course, we have nowhere to put this physical representation for my terrible life choices and, as yet, no way to tow it. But you can be sure I’ll spend the next twelve months looking into it all, before finally realising that this, too, may be a terrible idea.

Hamish Young - FIELD
This summer, Black Swan Arts will host FIELD, an exhibition by artist Hamish Young - a unique, participatory art installation designed for the vibrant community of Frome. Crafted from 28,000 hand-cast plaster shells, each individually moulded from shells gathered along the stunning southwest coastline, FIELD is a tribute to Frome’s residents. Every shell symbolises one of the 28,000 individuals who call this beautiful town their home.
Housed in the Long Gallery, right in the heart of Frome, this installation invites everyone to come together and engage with this transformative artwork. Whether you’re a proud local or a curious visitor exploring Frome, there’s a shell waiting just for you. Choose one to take with you - to a new place, a fresh home - where it will continue its journey under your care. Over time, as visitors and members of the community take these shells away, the installation will organically evolve and disperse; a poetic reflection of connection, movement and shared experience.
Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to be part of FIELD and create something truly meaningful and memorable.

Many thanks to Walkers are Welcome for their hard work in coordinating the events again this year, and to Frome Selwood Rotary for their support.” Les Stather of Frome Walkers Are Welcome told us, “Last year’s festival was enjoyed by nearly 300 people, and lots of popular walks are back again in 2025, including history walks around Frome’s blue plaques and war graves, or the chance to find out about the ‘canal that never was’ in Coleford. There’s also a walk to Orchardleigh, the five-mile Frome Inner Ring and a 13-mile walk around the Frome Walking Wheel.”

Creating musical magic
Inside the world of songwriter and producer DG Solaris
“Each day I find myself with either a seasoned performer or someone writing their first song,”
In a quiet studio in Rode, a unique kind of musical magic unfolds each day. Here, songwriter and producer Danny Green, known professionally as DG Solaris, helps people of all musical backgrounds turn ideas into songs, sometimes in just a few hours.
“Clients will often come in with a few scribbled lines,” Danny says, seated amid guitars, keyboards, and a humble but powerful home recording setup. “Together, we shape it into something real. Sometimes just one or two songs, other times a whole body of work. One client has recorded 18 songs with me!”
Danny’s studio is more than just a place to record. It’s a creative sanctuary. Sometimes his clients arrive after taking guitar lessons with him, newly inspired and eager to create. One particularly memorable
session involved a man who wrote and recorded two songs as a surprise gift to his wife, pressing them onto a 7-inch vinyl for their anniversary.
“Each day I find myself with either a seasoned performer or someone writing their first song,” Danny reflects. “Within an hour or two, we usually have a track they can take home. We might tweak it the following week, adding structure or layering instruments. If someone wants drums, I have drums!” He smiles, clearly passionate about the process. “It really feels like magic, making something beautiful out of thin air. And people just love it.”
Danny divides his time between producing, teaching and mentoring musicians. His dedication to teaching is evident in the energy he brings to lessons, both at his studio and in local schools including Rode, Vallis and Beckington Primaries. “Writing songs and jamming with a group of sevenyear-olds is one of the best parts of my week,” he says. “One kid at Rode wrote a song that the entire
school ended up singing at their end-of-year show. The kids get such a kick out of it. It’s such a unique creative outlet for them.”
Danny fell in love with music at the age of 13, when a cousin taught him two chords: Em and G. It was just enough to play Nirvana’s About a Girl. That moment, he says, changed everything. “I was hooked. I learned songs by Nirvana, Radiohead, Blur, all by ear, and started writing songs almost immediately, recording them on a four-track tape recorder.”
His music, released under the name DG Solaris, blends folk warmth with avant-pop textures: fuzzy guitars, lush synths, layered harmonies. Think Nick Drake meets Paul Simon with a hint of Tame Impala. “These days I record most of the instruments myself, but I love featuring guest singers like Rosanna Schura, Holly Henderson, Augusta and my wife Leana.” Originally from West Yorkshire, Danny was swept onto the vibrant Brighton music scene in his early 20s. He played guitar and drums in several acclaimed bands, including touring with Laura Marling and supporting Neil Young. “That was an incredible
experience. I got to meet him twice and watched him perform stadium shows in Paris and Nantes. An unforgettable experience.”
Back in Somerset, Danny channels his love for live music into curating the Night River shows at HydeAway, a 35-seat venue in Frome. “It’s like an Aladdin’s cave. Tiny, cosy, with a speakeasy feel. We’ve hosted artists like Herman Dune, James Yorkston and Beth Rowley. The audience is right there, just a few metres away. It’s a very special atmosphere.” His next headline show there is scheduled for 13th November.
But it’s the stillness and intensity of studio life that fuels his creativity most. “I’m happiest when I’m deep in a project, arranging something exciting,” he says. “Whether it’s my song or someone else’s, that process feels sacred. Working in a creative flow is one of the most rewarding things I know. You never quite know where a song will go, but if you stay with it, something beautiful always emerges.” In Danny’s studio, the act of song-writing isn’t just craft. It’s connection, discovery, and quite often, magic. To learn more or get in touch: dgsolaris.com . For Night River shows: nightriver.net

Mental Health Matters HAVE YOUR SAY
In 2023, 1 in 5 children and young people had a probable mental health disorder. With 50% of lifetime mental health disorders established by the age of 14, and support services overwhelmed, what can the Frome community do to further support the good mental health of our children and young people?
Anna Sabine, MP for Frome and East Somerset, in partnership with Beacon Services Resources CIC and support from Frome Medical Practice, has announced an ambitious new initiative: a town-wide ‘Hack-AThon’ aimed at addressing the growing challenge of poor mental health in children and young people.
To prepare for the Hack-A-Thon, held in Frome on Saturday 6th September, the team are asking parents/carers, professionals and young people (age 10-17) in and around Frome to contribute their thoughts on the mental health of children and young people. Feedback from the anonymous
surveys will be used to inform both the event and the next steps we can take as a community to support our young people’s good mental health.

Heavenly
“Absolutely Devine, just a few drops leaves your skin feeling completely moisturised, soft and supple”
Love my skin
“I’ve never been as dedicated to a skincare product than I have with these. I use them every day and love how my skin feels. Such a happy bunny.”
Magic oil!
“I can’t recommend this oil highly enough! I’ve been using it for a few months and wouldn’t use anything else now. At nearly 40 it is the only thing I’ve used that has actually made any difference to my skin. Combined with the serum, it’s cleared up my skin and made it so much softer and smoother. And it smells amazing!”
Skin saviour!
“My absolute favourite thing to protect and nourish my dry skin, I’ve used a lot of different facial oils and this one is my far my favourite. I use it together with the serum and have found my skin to be in better condition than it has been for years. Highly recommend.”
Miracle products klaxon!
“I recently purchased the Glow Facial Oil and Plump Hydrating Serum and can honestly say they’ve totally changed the way my skin looks. No longer is my skin grey and lacklustre - I really do glow! The consistency of the serum in particular is so luxurious and the oil feels like I’m giving my skin the ultimate treat each morning and night. Have recommended to all my family and friends and will be forever a Hibi convert!”
Adderwell Water Meadow
now officially belongs to the people of Frome
Following an incredibly successful crowdfunding campaign that raised over £37k, the sale of Adderwell Water Meadow along the river Frome has been completed; 3.5 acres of vital green space now belongs to the people of Frome. The land has been bought by Frome Town Council and put into a trust which ensures the meadow will be protected in perpetuity as a haven for the people and wildlife of Frome.
The sale follows years of campaigning from grassroots groups and local charity Friends of the River Frome, who collaborated with Frome Town Council to save this precious site from development. The purchase is a testament to the power of the community and the many hardworking volunteer groups in Frome.
Chairman of Friends of the River Frome, Mike Bull, shared his thanks. “Friends of the River Frome would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project – without you we wouldn’t be able to save this valuable habitat and open space for the people of Frome. Water meadows are becoming scarcer, but they’re needed more than ever to help with the climate emergency. They provide a valuable biodiverse habitat, as well as
helping to store water and slow flooding during periods of intense rainfall. We’re excited to work with Frome Town Council in the coming months to prepare a management plan for the site. We will also be planning an event in the late summer to celebrate and thank everyone for their help in protecting this important site.”
Frome Town Councillor Mark Dorrington also shared his delight in the achievement “Frome Town Council were proud to work with Friends of the River Frome to buy and preserve this important land for wildlife and people – and what a fantastic show of support from the community, from Save Open Spaces Frome and the Rotary to help raise the remaining funds! This land has vital benefits for biodiversity, and in time will become a recreational space for picnics, forest schools and the access to nature that we know is so important for mental and physical health.”
Now the sale is complete, the meadow will be managed jointly by Friends of the River Frome and Frome Town Council, who are developing plans to make sure the site is at its best.
