ABOUT THE BOOK

This book is a special issue simply because it is the last - the last issue of the 2020-21 batch of Rheims. As senior members of the Rheims go, we’d like to commemorate our journey by co-writing this book. This is our 12th issue - considering that Rheims is written monthly - a year has already passed. We started in May and we ended in May. Since this is such a special issue, we came up with the theme of a “Selfish Newspaper.” Denotatively, a newspaper is written for the community, but we already had 11 issues of that. Thus, we made this selfish newspaper. This book is dedicated to its writers and artists. A gift to ourselves. This book contains the reminiscence, joys, jabs, jokes, and hopes of the Lasallian Rheims Family.

The go-to Cornetto by Lance Crisostomo

We all have that one food that we go to every time that we feel off. We may have had a bad day in school and/ or at work or haven’t met our expectations and the only way to cool off and be back to normal is to eat our go-to food. Maybe this food is your mom’s home-cooked meal or Jollibee’s signature fried chicken but for me, it is the one and only Cornetto. As soon as you take off that seal on top of your cornetto, you are going to see the shiny, creamy, and tasty top. Some cornettos will have this what they call disc which is hardened chocolate with bits of nuts on top to serve as the crown of your cornetto. Personally, I prefer the ones without the disc on top. As you take your first bite on that top, you can feel the burst of flavors satisfying your taste buds and the coolness of the ice cream itself relaxing your mind. How fantastic is that combination of sensation! As you continue to enjoy your cornetto, you will slowly feel like you are in a different place. A place of peace and comfort where all negativities in your life may not be seen

nor felt. All that’s left are the happy memories of the past that puts a smile on your face. Remembering the days when you would cry just to get a cornetto or the days when you will really strive to get a high score just to get a cornetto from your parents - those were the fun days of the past. As you dive deeper into your cone, you’ll eventually reach the best part of it - the solid chocolate in the deepest part of the cone. It has been a debate whether this is better than the chocolate found on the top or the one on top is better. However, one thing is for sure - both of them are really to die for. As you munch that last part of cornetto, you will feel mixed emotions, specifically sad and satisfied. You may feel sad since, after this, you have nothing left but at the same time satisfied since you have been relieved from negativities, especially stress. With just 20 Pesos, I am able to relieve myself from negativities, bring myself back into the past, and put a smile not just on my face but on others’ faces as well. What about you? Being an editor is an incredible experience. You get to turn your thoughts and imagination into a reality. But before it can happen, you’ll need resources, ideas, and appropriate technicalities to create it as you planned to do so. But remember that it is not always guaranteed that Plan A would work. Therefore, it is necessary to have a backup plan. Everyone has their own way of making their craft. It is also evident in the video and photo editing. It can be either an experiment made by oneself or an adaptation from another creator. The outcome would depend on the editor itself whether they want to look further into their work or settle on what they have done so far. Either way, they would still be proud of their work. If it is the other way around, there are still ways to improve. That is why it takes practice and dedication to master skills. One thing that editors should never forget - saving your progress. Every editor’s nightmares are slow devices, applications suddenly not responding, insufficient storage, and many more. If your application has an autosave feature, you’re in luck. Rumor has it that devices can smell fear. Once they sensed it, they would suddenly lag out or would not work. Worse is when it happened at the time you would need it the most. So better to save it sooner rather than later. Last, but a very important thing to remember being an editor - love what you are doing. Editing can be a hobby or even a passion. It will only depend on yourself if you want to continue. There are times that we would run out of ideas while in the middle of the progress or we would go back to square one because we are not satisfied with the draft. Do not worry. It takes time for us to come up with a greater idea. It is also best for us not to rush our craft because it could affect the outcome of the output. Enjoy the process and do not pressure yourself. Do not forget to take your time and take care of yourself. 17

“Naranasan ko nang lahat yan” - it’s a line that will really stick to my head because this year ’s Rheims journey is something that I didn’t expect. To talk to big names in various industries, to host webinars, to host the premiere night, to take up different roles in webinars - these are just some of the experiences that I have on this year alone. We all know that Gawad Alab had its series of webinars. In each webinar, there are certain roles that each member of the executive position performs. In our meetings on who will take up each role, everyone is nervous and at the same time, excited to know who will be the host. When you are the host of the webinar, you have the pressure at your back because the whole ASJ community is watching, especially Mr. Richard Pineda, the principal, Ms. Vicky Gallardo, the vice-principal, Ms. Daisy Romero, the school consultant, and Mr. Joel Pascual, the school’s finance head. Whenever those meetings started, I was like, ”will this be me?”, ”no way this is me”, ”what if I am the host for the webinar on Wednesday?”, and the thinking goes on and on until the announcement. For the first webinar on arts with Mr. Rogie Ramilo, I was one of the hosts (together with John Czar, my batchmate). We prepared for it and made sure that we know what to say. We had practiced with the executive committee, Mr. Kent talked to us about the points to remember, and before the actual webinar, we had the final briefing. We may have prepared but the nervousness was still standing out above all emotions slash feelings that I was having as that webinar was going on. We managed to pull it off and for a fact, John Czar and I knew that there are rooms for improvement but still, we set the bar high. 42

After that webinar, I wasn’t really expecting to host any more webinars in the future since we are rotating our line-up. However, that wasn’t really the case. I had two more webinars to host. One is on literature with Mr. Kent and Dr. Cabanias. To be hosting with Mr. Kent was a dream of a lifetime because it’s a rare opportunity to work and at the same time, learn from one of the great teachers of today. But, the pressure was immense since the excellence of my co-host was there and the title of the speaker “Dr.” was really horrifying. The day of the webinar came, it started, and from start to finish, I had the chills and pressure all over my body. However, I can’t deny the fact that I have learned a lot from that experience and I grew as a person. Also, I can’t deny the fact that I wished that LiTalk was my last webinar to host but, I was wrong. The other one was really shocking, horrifying, scary, and exciting at the same time. I have to host the Kumustahan with Allexa Pascual and Br. Dennis Magbanua with our guests, Ms. Annabelle Mcdonnell, Ms. Daphne Villanueva, and Ms. Hidilyn Diaz. My first initial reaction was that, “what am I doing in this line-up? I think I can’t keep up with them.” Br. Dennis and Allexa were really great people. I have heard so much about Br. Dennis and personally, I look up to him. Allexa “Gan da” was a different one since she has all the qualities of a perfect host. First of all, her energy breaks all boundaries. Should we have tools to measure people’s energy, she’ll definitely break the meters. Her thought process was truly spectacular and her ability to adapt to the aura and vibe of people was great. Going to our guests, Ms. Annabelle is known to be a journalist and a beauty queen; Ms. Daphne is a really great musician; Ms. Hidilyn is an international icon in sports. The pressure was really there. The game is on. I tried to look into what I can do and match Ate Allex’s energy. I was pretty much successful in doing so but I wasn’t consistent in keeping up with her. We have practiced, may it be alone and with Br. Dennis, which really helped me to be able to compose myself. The Kumustahan started and the stage was set for us to raise our energies and keeping the show alive. For the entirety of the program, I felt a boost of confidence and energy coursing through my veins. I was able to talk to the guests calmly and I was able to keep up with my co-hosts easily. After that program, I was able to breathe normally and say to myself that I have definitely surpassed my boundaries and I have experienced it all. “Naranasan ko nang lahat yan” - I’m not bragging about the people whom I was able to work with and about how vast my experiences are in the course of Gawad Alab. It’s just a relief to be able to experience once-in-a-lifetime things here in the Lasallian Rheims. If I were to be given a chance to host a webinar once again, I would definitely be up for the challenge time and time again. 43

Mas makakatawa ka ng malakas, makakalandi ka ng palihim, mararanasan mo 'yung fieldtrip na pagka-mahal mahal, retreat na hahagulhol ka nang parang walang bukas, may kaaway ka, may pinaparinggan ka, manlalait ng outfit ng iba, foundation day na maaubos boses mo kakasaway ng makukulit, night party na sasayaw ka sa crush mo na hindi ka naman gusto kasi may iba siyang gusto na may gusto naman sa iba, tapos either pinipikon mo teacher mo o nilalambing mo, o wala lang. Wala kang ginagawa, sa classroom lang. Chilling like a villain. Nakasalalay naman grades mo sa katabi mo eh, kaya tamang present ka lang sa section mo, display ka lang sa room. Napapaligiran ka ng mga kaklase mong napakaingay tapos hihintayin mo lang magdismissal. Uuwi na bitbit ang bag mong either walang laman or napakabigat kasi puno ng libro. Even though andaming assignments and quizzes, everything's bearable because at the end of the day, you're walking home with people who make you happy. "Weh!?" Tiningnan ko si Katherine, tawa siya ng tawa sa akin. Tapos sumunod na tawa nina Nicole, Elmira, Sandra, at ni Jude. Hindi ko naman alam na, That's should be me 'yon. Malay ko ba. Super random pero ang saya lang 'pag naaalala. Lalo na if the whole classroom laughs with you. Tulad nang pag mine-measure ni Mr. Ang 'yung mga ilong ng tatlong classmates ko gamit ruler para makita kung sino ang pinakapango sa amin; pag napakaingay namin ni Samuel tapos naiirita na lang si Jamie tsaka si York; pag tulog na lahat sa piling ni Ms. Eva; kapag amoy merienda na classroom; kapag San Miguel na 'yung topic sa Biology—good times pare. Tawa si Kyle, "Mga pinag-iisip mo talaga," Tas pinilit ko siyang gawin namin, pero ako 'yung magttrap sa kanya. Ginawa nga namin. Tawa lang kami ng tawa. Kids, ganun lumandi. Idaan sa tawa. The point is, the good thing about face-to-face classes is hindi ko masyado naalala ang bad days ko sa school kasi mostly puro happy memories ang naalala ko. Kaya ngayong kahit naka-break ako sa online distance learning, wala akong naalala masyado sa naganap noong may pasok pa kami this 2020 pwera na lang sa sama ng loob… sa totoo lang. Wala na akong will gumawa ng mga bagay, except sa Rheims kasi lagot ako kay Dave Christian. Sana, Lord, tapusin mo na COVID-19. Di na keri ng beauty ko, huhu. Baka ako 'yung unang matapos. Looks like another school year ends. Some of us move up a grade, some of us will transfer, some of us graduate and move on to a new chapter. All different circumstances, but we move forward all the same. Goodbyes are the hardest things to say in life. Whenever something comes to an end, you may leave feeling regret that, maybe you could’ve spent the time you had better. As we all continue pushing forward, the more opportunities and the more roadblocks will appear before us. The choices we make influence every path that lies ahead. But the scary thing is, we can’t see what that is. A vision is not the same as reality. Mistakes will happen, but that’s alright. Every mistake is a reminder that you will do it better next time—all it takes is a little persistence and courage.

Nung nagsimula ang online class, I was so happy kase ang nasa isip ko mas madami na akong time para matulog, maglaptop, at maglaro, but bOI I WAS WRONG. This way of learning is very exhausting, nakakatitig lang sa laptop, tapos minsan apaka bagal ng internet tas magpapanic na baka may importanteng diniscuss tas mamimiss ko kase nadisconnect ako or nagbrownout. At first, todo notes pa ako, pero nung tumagal I became dependent on the powerpoint presentations na binibigay samin. The fact na minsan di ko na binabasa yung contents ng powerpoints kase pwede namang hanapin ko na lang mismo yung sagot kaysa intindihin ko pa kung anong nakasulat doon. It’s really a shame that this school year ended like this, like I barely learned anything, yung mga pinagaralan sa first and second quarter di ko na maalala, imbes na ang maging goal ko is to learn something, I prioritized to pass every assignment and performances on time which is really hard since ang dami ko din namang responsibilidad na kailangang gawin sa bahay. Speaking of bahay, the fact na habang nagkklase may mga natatanggap parin akong utos like bumili ng ganto, ganyan, punta doon, punta dyan, asikasuhin mo yan etc. Etc. Makes this online experience a lot worse, yung tipong kapag sasabihin ko na nagttest kami or importante yung dinidiscuss, papagalitan pa ako kase palusot lang daw yun T-T Ayaw ko na, di ko na kaya ng isang taon pang online class. My vision on the future of Rheims is that there would be plenty of members will enjoy doing these activities and that they will continue to learn from it. Members would be able to work together and improve over time due to them joining in Rheims. I think the future of the Rheims will continue to shine or even shine brighter than what we currently have. Future editors and students who are passionate about delivering news and information to people will continue to reach its hands to help the Academy of Saint John. Rheims for me is still on its baby steps when it comes to news broadcasting and editing capabilities but it is without a doubt, the continuous dedication of its members to share important information will increase its experience to provide better quality of news to everyone. During quarantine where face-to-face classes have transpired, it is a major hurdle for the current publishing, broadcasting, and editing team to provide quality information to everyone because everyone is new to the environment but the succeeding Rheims members will have inspiration from what we created and will serve as a pillar or a foundation for the juniors on how the obstacles of the Rheims can be used as an opportunity to gather attention and provide quality content. It will help our juniors to create a better environment and continuously improve the skill ranges of our current divisions which are the publishing, broadcasting and editing teams. I hope that the capabilities and skills we created while we are working for the Rheims will not only be brought with us as we go to college but also be handed down to our juniors of the Rheims as they would be the ones to take on the torches we once held. I believe that our work for the Rheims will leave a mark in the history of ASJ and will inspire future students to take on the path we took. Rheims and academics are not easy to maintain especially when it’s contemporaneous with each other. But finding that balance will surely help us bloom. The Rheims family made me find my passion and talents and it helped me become a better student. I never expected myself to go out of my comfort zone; I was always only focused on what I was told to do by my teachers, only doing my assignments or work when I need to but my Rheims family made me realize my passion and my talents and It helped me go out of my comfort zone and to realize my potential and I couldn’t be more grateful. Envisioning what will happen to the Rheims family when I go to university is hard because I know great things are in store for their future and I expect the best from them. The students that worked with me and the teachers who taught me so much made me more confident and talented in what I do. To all the future students out there who are going to be part of the Rheims family, all I can advise is that you should all do your best and trust the people that are around you because they will teach you so many great things that can help you in gaining confidence and realizing your potential. Joining Rheims is one of the best decisions that I made in my life. In Rheims, I met some amazing people, learned many things and faced hardships such as managing my time because I needed time to do my assignments, household chores, and then, my articles. I remember telling a friend that managing my time is so hard and I'm worried that I may not be able to pass my articles on time, then my friend told me "Ba't ka pa kasi sumali wala naman atang nagbabasa ng balita niyo." It was sad to hear that because I realized that not many people care about the newspapers that we publish monthly. It felt like the amount of time and effort that the team spent to publish a newspaper are all going to waste. That's why I hope in the future Rheims would be a big part of the school, that the students would look forward to the contents that the Publication team and other divisions will publish, that they would take their time to read the newspaper and watch the broadcast and other videos that the Rheims will release. I hope that future Rheims members will do their best and prove that being in Rheims is not a waste of time. - Jade Magno

What I envision for Rheims years from now is that we are actively competing in national or even international competitions for school journalism. I want all the projects we have now to continue on and improve in the next generations of Rheims and be recognized outside of ASJ. I want Gawad Alab to be a national competition. For the future Rheims members, just enjoy everything you do. You have the BEST adviser that would guide you and be with you all throughout your Rheims journey. Rheims will be the place you learn and grow as an artist, writer, and leader. I hope that future Rheims members will continue the passion and drive that the previous members gave towards Rheims. I hope that you see that despite all the hard work, sleepless nights, countless revisions, rushed deadlines, etc. that the experience you would gain with Rheims is a lot more rewarding and fulfilling in the end. The curtains are closing, The clock is ticking, the school year has its ending, and a new year for The Lasallian Rheims is arising. My time in Rheims wasn’t as long as the other Rheims members, but it was long enough for me to learn, grow, and love it. I started with no experience in writing articles, but Rheims has taught me how to put my ideas into words, how to share my voice through paper, and how to expand my limits. It may sound simple but it was indeed difficult at first, that is why I am exceptionally grateful for my mentors who helped me make my ideas and articles possible. Looking back at it now, I can say that it was an amazing experience and as the months went by, I realized that Rheims taught me not just how to improve my writing but to believe in myself and that is a lesson that I plan on carrying with me my whole life. Now as a new year for the Lasallian Rheims is in our midst, and as new members come and senior members go, I hope that the next batch and all the future batches of Rheims members will continue to keep the Rheims fire burning as they bring out their ideas and feed their passion in the name of Saint La Salle. I look forward to the Rheims publication, multimedia, creatives, and broadcasting teams, to harness hard work and passion, as they make a difference in sharing their voice, talent, and ideas, may it be through words or through art. But most of all, amidst the late nights and hardships they might encounter, may they not forget to have love for what they are doing and to believe in themselves. As I joined the Rheims family, I am grateful to be with awesome people who are aspiring to be artists, writers, photographers, editors, and broadcasters. Some of these aspects, I unexpectedly experienced it because I never see myself being involved in arts and literature like being a broadcaster and a member of this organization. However, I realized that I should never ignore these great opportunities to improve my abilities. The Lasallian Rheims had brought students who wanted to pursue arts and literature. Every member of this organization has their own task which needs to be accomplished. Indeed, I felt pressure at first because of unfamiliar work, but it really shaped me to be the best version of myself. This organization offers great opportunities to students about teamwork and leadership. Rheims has always been engaged on its vision and mission by introducing new media platforms such as broadcasting and Gawad Alab. I am looking forward to seeing that Gawad Alab will open its doors to many more students in our district and to expand its vision and mission to continue its legacy in developing a new breed of artists. VI S I O N Rheims is a special organization or better to say, a news and current affairs agency that serves the Academy of Saint John’s (ASJ) community by providing information, additional knowledge, entertainment, and amusement through the different divisions that it has.Year after year, Rheims is able to break boundaries and help its members to discover more of themselves and grow as writers, editors, artists, and servants of the community. What makes the Lasallian Rheims so special is that it is grounded on a vision. It is that vision that keeps everyone on the same boat, pushing themselves to their limits, discovering new abilities and skills, and conquering their fears. I envision the Lasallian Rheims to be one of the best news and current affairs agencies in the whole nation. The reliability, timeliness, and accuracy are present in all divisions, may it be the publication, multimedia, or creatives division. The ability to inspire people and put a smile on their faces must be there. On-point articles, wonderful videos and documentaries, posters, artworks, and graphics that are inspiring, worth seeing, and reading - these are the components of this vision. Dreaming and envisioning big is not bad because that is what will push everyone to work hard and be passionate about what they are doing, right? It may seem that this vision may be impossible but as we say in our monthly episode of Rheims direct, we are starting small but remarkable. The keys to achieving this vision are trust, truth, passion, and cooperation, coupled with action. Everything will start with passion because this will drive everyone to keep moving forward. As Mr. Kent said in the past, we may only move forward or move backward. Passion - that love for our craft will motivate us, inspire us, and spark that vision with ourselves. Then, we must learn how to trust and cooperate with each other. We are an agency and a family. We grow, learn, and do more together. As Helen Keller stated, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” And lastly, there is a need for actions because without actions, basically, we couldn't really move forward. Have the previous batches of the Lasallian Rheims family as your inspiration and guide for they have shown manifestations of these keys. My experience with Rheims has been the first of its kind throughout my life in school. Back in my Alma Mater, I never really had to make use of writing outside of school works and projects, let alone did we have any sort of news and media organizations. Actually, I wasn’t even supposed to write for Rheims at first. When I was being invited to join, I agreed to be an editorial cartoonist. Not long after, I then found myself having to write the actual editorials that I was drawing cartoons about. What a turn of events! That being said, I’ve only been part of Rheims for basically a year. Can’t say I’m fully familiar with everything that’s going on behind the scenes, but one thing I do know is that everyone makes results. Each one has a part to play and a role to fill, each one being a gear within a mechanism working together. Now that the seniors including me are leaving, the responsibility is left to be shouldered by those who remain. As long as everyone continues to work with the same commitment and passion, I would say the future of Rheims will be in safe hands. - Seann Carpizo

There is a bright future coming in for The Lasallian Rheims. It will continue to grow thanks to the efforts of the junior and senior members from then until now. There are more things to achieve and I have faith in the present and future members of the organization. One day, The Lasallian Rheims will be recognized for many prestigious awards and would go on to compete on a higher level of school press events like the NSPC. It may seem hard to reach these goals, but nothing is impossible. It is a tough road to take just to achieve something unbelievable to do but would all be worth it in the end. I wish all the best for the organization and all the current and future members. Always feel at home. When I proposed to make the Rheims publications monthly, I have always thought how amazing would it be if Rheims could produce quality articles daily. If Rheims reached the point where it has become part of people’s daily lives to scroll through Rheims’ materials, I feel that Rheims would have reached a peak. But my hopes for Rheims don’t end there. If the Rheims were ever to reach a pinnacle, I hope that future Rheims leaders will look for another mountain to climb. I envision the future of Rheims to be like a Car Company. Every year there’s something new. Not a total revamp but a new bumper, tire, or color to differentiate the years. I want to see Rheims aiming for bigger and grander projects, perhaps triple the budget of the first Gawad Alab, maybe HAHA. ASJ has already built up a good reputation in the area in the field of academics, I hope the same occurrence will apply to Rheims. I hope that Rheims members will keep growing in numbers. I hope that the passion of these members burns brighter. Maybe one day, there will be a daily publication, who knows? HAHA Per Aspera ad Astra

I’ll be direct. I always envision the Rheims to be the leading student publication in General Trias. Maybe in Cavite? Philippines? Who knows? HAHAHAHA. I want to see Rheims like the well-known mass media companies in the Philippines. There are segments for news and current affairs, time slots for entertainment and game shows, documentaries, and maybe a midnight show. And of course, a project that is new and an act of service to the community. I hope these projects will help the students to relieve their stress despite the struggles brought by the pandemic to online education. I also hope that the future Rheims members and also the students of Academy of Saint John will bring out the best in them to share their talents and skills in different facets to the ASJ Community.
