LASO runs second esports tournament

asallian Assembly of Student Officers (LASO) organized the second esports tournament in ASJ, 2IKLAB, February 7-12. 2IKLAB featured three game titles, Valorant, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in which 16 teams in total joined the event – seven teams for Valorant, four teams for CODM and five teams for MLBB. LASO utilized Twitch to broadcast the games and Discord to monitor the players’ communication and activity. The group stages were conducted first for CODM and MLBB last February 7 and 8, which then proceeded with a seeded double-elimination bracket for the playoffs from February 9 to 12. MLBB group stages are in a best of two (BO2) format while CODM has a best of three (BO3) format. Playoffs are in a best of five (BO5) except for the grand finals, which is a best of seven (BO7). For Valorant, a hybrid and seeded double-elimination bracket was used throughout the tournament in which all games are best of three (BO3) except from the finals, which is a best of five (BO5). The grand finals for the games were conducted last February 12 for Valorant and MLBB and February 16 for CODM. After all the action, three new champions emerged; Technical Team for Valorant, Wild Dogs for CODM, and Mga Alagad ni Yae Miko for MLBB. Each champion team has received a cash prize of Php. 2,500.00 and gold medals to be awarded during the honors day.

Technical Team defy the odds

Technical Team demolished Tap Your ID in a 3-1 map score in the Grand Finals of 2IKLAB: Valorant, cementing their championship. The grand finals happened on February 12, 1:20 PM, in which the series ended at map four at around 4 in the afternoon of the same day. Map one opened in Haven as both teams arrived in a 13-10 score in favor of Technical Team, with stellar performances of Bryan “mochi” Florentino’s Reyna and Andre “Ella Mae Café” Mojica’s Jett. Map two was equalized by Tap Your ID in a 13-9 victory in Icebox with good performances of Matthew “DOOF” Mabunga, Kashly “Kashly” Mendoza, and Justin “Hustino” Sipat using Chamber, Jett, and Reyna, respectively. Technical Team quickly ended map three in Ascent 13-3 in which Bryan “mochi” Florentino’s Reyna gathered the most kills on the map (26) and Andre “Ella Mae Café” Mojica’s Jett secured six (6) first bloods. The last map, Fracture, ended with a 13-4 victory for Technical Team with Andre “Ella Mae Café” Mojica’s Jett securing the highest amount of first bloods the tournament for a single map (9). Both teams played their hardest throughout the finals, but Technical Team proved that they

were the strongest in the tournament, which consisted of Grade 12 students Arjake Saria (team captain), John Czar Salaguinto, Chaius Guererro, Bryan Florentino, Andre Mojica, and John Lloyd Fortuno. The championship also produced four two-time champions, Salaguinto, Florentino, Fortuno, and Mojica. Technical Team crawled throughout all the lower bracket matches, beating the likes of Galing Mo Boss Mark, RNS, Hauzmates, and AMNK. Beforehand, the two teams first met during the playins in which Tap Your ID won with a 2-1 map score, sending Technical Team to the lower bracket.

CODM: Wild Dogs shows masterclass display

Wild Dogs claimed the 2IKLAB: CODM championship after displaying mastery in objective taking and teamplay, sweeping Red Flag Esports, 4-0. Game one ended with a 150-59 score in Hardpoint Crossfire after a great performance by Dwayne “Toxic?” Uy having the highest combat score of the game (2824). Game two finished at a 6-2 score in Search and Destroy Firing Range in which Kurt “Rawr?” Clavel gathered 11 kills and Dwayne “Toxic?” Uy having 5 plants during the map. The third game ended with a 150-66 score in Domination Summit after a stellar performance of Shawn “Shawny?” Broas having 9 captures and a 15/10/24 KDA. Afterwards, Red Flag Esports forfeited game four, declaring Wild Dogs as the Champion of the tournament. The championship team consisted of team captain Dwayne Uy, Iñigo Mota, Cham Eblamo, Kurt Clavel, Shawn Broas, and Hezekiel Sulat. The team dominated the group stages with a 6-0 record and the upper bracket finals match against Red Flag Esports with a 3-1 score, garnering a total game score of 13-1.

Mga Alagad Ni Yae Miko come back stronger Mga Alagad ni Yae Miko (YMM) dominated 2IKLAB: MLBB after a near sweep against Fear This Esports (FTE) in a 4-1 game score in a BO7 Grand Finals. Game one ended in a quick 12-minute victory with a victory for YMM as Sleigh “Znare qt” Lazanas carried the game with his Paquito having a 9/1/6 KDA and Jean Paul “Taki” Romero’s Freya who provided space for YMM to create plays. YMM bagged game two after a conceal-dive play of the whole team led by Troy “Satsuki?” Evangelista’s Minotaur and Ben “yeorm” Nivera’s Kagura, ending the game with an 11-3 kill score. SJ Rheims staffers secured top-five finishes in the week-long 2022 Divisions Schools Press Conference (DSPC), earning ASJ slots for the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC). In an awarding ceremony hosted live at DepEd Tayo General Trias Facebook page last February 21, Eight of the Rheims staffers were recognized by the Division of General Trias as winners in their respective categories. Guidance Deparment holds annual Career Fair RENZ BAUTISTA

SJ’s Guidance Department held a two-day Virtual Career Orientation for Grade 12 students, February 14-15. In an interview with Ms. Cyril Mamaril, she stated that the event was held for the Grade 12 students to fortify and guide them in making wise decisions about their desired career and course and help them choose which university is appropriate in line with the course that they want to pursue. “There is a need for the Career Fair to be conducted because the future of the students is our main concern. We want to make sure that their passion, skills, and strengths are aligned and considered upon choosing their

Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje announced

that the Department of Health (DOH) eyes to conduct the 4th “Bayanihan, Bakunahan”, focusing on inoculating senior citizens. In a Laging Handa press briefing last February 26, Cabotaje said that the discussions regarding the details and conduct of the 4th “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” are still on-going.

She also said that aside from the senior citizens, the 4th wave of nationwide vaccination will also be targeting to boost the vaccination of children ages 12 to 17. As of February 27, there are 135,479,183 doses administered wherein 10,137,875 are boosted, 63,092,684 are fully vaccinated, and 62,248,624 have received their first dose according to the ABS-CBN COVID-19 Vaccine tracker. IATF implements new Alert Level metrics LANCE CRISOSTOMO

he Inter-Agency Task Force approved the newly revised metrics in order to determine the Alert Level placement of all areas across the Philippines, Thursday, February 24. In his statement, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said that the alert level placement will still be determined by the combination of ‘cross-tabulation’ of cases classification and COVID-19 bed

utilizations but the changes were manifested as cutoffs for average daily attack rate (ADAR) should be six for lowrisk classification, six to 18 for moderate risk, and more than 18 for high risk. Additionally, he emphasized that highly-urbanized and independent cities can now be placed under Alert level one given that they meet all the criteria mentioned in the revised metrics. The revised metrics provided

that the qualified cities can be placed under Alert Level 1 if they attained low/minimal risk cases, less than 50% COVID bed used, 70% fully vaccinated population, and 80% fully vaccinated A2 groups. The said revised metrics were used by IATF in determining the alert level classifications for all areas in the Philippines starting March 1. [R]

C abinet Secretary Karlo Nograles announced that the IATF approved the placement of 39 areas across the country under Alert Level 1, effective March 1 - 15. In his statement last February 27, Nograles said that the following areas will join NCR under Alert Level 1 for the first half of March: LUZON AREA Abra, Apayao, Baguio City, Kalinga, Dagupan City, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Batanes, Cagayan, City of Santiago, Isabela, Quirino, Angeles City, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Olongapo City,

Pampanga, Tarlac, Cavite, Laguna, Marinduque, Puerto Princesa City, Romblon, Naga City, and Catanduanes VISAYAS AREA Aklan, Bacolod City, Capiz, Guimaras, Siquijor, and Biliran MINDANAO AREA Zamboanga City, Cagayan De Oro City, Camiguin, and Davao City. Under the Alert Level 1 classification, human movements (applicable for all ages) are allowable given that minimum public health protocols are observed. Additionally, all establishments

in areas under Alert Level 1 are allowed to cater their 100% full-capacity but everyone in the said establishments is still required to wear face masks and follow minimum public health protocols. Individuals aged 18 and above, on the other hand, are still required to provide proof that they were fully vaccinated in order to join mass gatherings and enter establishments especially those under Closed, Crowded, and Close Contact (3Cs) classification. On the other hand, the rest of the areas which are not classified under Alert Level 1 were placed under Alert Level 2 effective from March 1 - 15 as well. [R]

he Philippine Post Office (PHLPost) revealed the 10 Outstanding Filipinos Commemorative Stamps in commemoration of the 75th anniversary since the office’s first issuance of post stamps. In his speech at the Manila Central Post Office ceremony last February 26, Postmaster General Norman N. Fulgencio said that these 10 Filipinos are included in the 2nd wave of commemorative stamps in recognition of what they have done for the country. “The Ten (10) Outstanding Filipinos honored by the Post Office have dedicated their lives and talents to the Filipino people. So, they deserve to be immortalized in our stamps, to inspire not only Filipinos but every nationality who will see our stamps. We are proud of their

accomplishments,” Fulgencio explained. “This is our modest way of giving recognition and paying tribute to our legends. They have tirelessly served this nation through giving joy and inspiration from their movies, pride and passion from international wins and recognitions, caring for others through their scientific innovations and all the sacrifices they made for us,” Postmaster Fulgencio added. According to PHLPost, 215,000 copies of the 10 stamp designs were printed which will be available for Php 12.00 a piece. With the theme “Salamat: Pagpupugay sa mga Alamat”, this ceremony marked the second out of the three releases of Filipino commemorative stamps, following the first release last November 2021.

Philippines returns to low risk for COVID-19 after Omicron surge

epartment of Health (DOH) announced last February 15 that the risk level for COVID-19 has once again returned to low risk after record breaking cases last month. DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reported that the average daily cases from Feb. 8 to 14 has declined by 56 percent from the number of infections that were shown from Feb. 1 to 7.

All regions in the country were also reported to be under low risk except for four regions: Region 11 (Davao), Cordillera Administrative Region, Region 6 (Western Visayas), and Region 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN)–all of which are under the moderate risk classification. Acting Presidential Spokesperson Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles also credited the latest figures to the cooperation of the Filipinos and their

adherence to the public health standards. “All of the progress we have made to bring down the number of cases is a product of our collective efforts, and we thank our kababayans for their cooperation. We urge everyone to remain conscious of our health protocols as we work to build on the progress we continue to make,” Nograles said. The government expects that the Philippines' economy will return as more Filipinos avail their COVID-19 shots. [R]

March 2, the Department of Health tallied a total of 866 new cases, the lowest this year, after two months of spikes in coronavirus cases. The total number of infections is now at 3,663,920, while the active cases are at 50,827. According to the DOH’s bul-

letin, 87 percent, which is 757 of the 866 reported cases today, occurred within the past 14 days. However, while all laboratories in the country are operational, eight laboratories have been unable to submit the testing data, which would’ve contributed an average of 3.8% of samples tested. The death toll also

reached 56,504, as 53 new deaths were reported. The recent number of infections has been declining after the record-breaking number of COVID-19 cases in one day last January 15. The number of active COVID-19 cases as of March 2 is at 50,827, the lowest this year. [R]

Study proves that chewing sugar-free gum reduces preterm births BEN NIVERA

large study in Malawi concluded that chewing sugar-free gum twice a day during pregnancy reduced premature births. The gum that they used contains xylitol instead of regular sugar. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol found in most fruits and vegetables. It has a sweet taste and is usually used as a substitute for sugar. Despite the sweet taste, it does not cause tooth decay and even reduces the levels of decay-causing bacteria in our saliva. The effect seems to happen because the chewing gum reduces gum disease, which has previously been linked with a higher rate of preterm births. Previous studies have shown that chewing xylitol gum leads to fewer cavities and suggest it can reduce inflammation. The trial was led by Kjersti Aagaard at the Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. They chose

Malawi because it had the highest rate of premature births in the world. More than 10,000 women who were in their early pregnancies or before their pregnancies were asked to take part in the research, with only roughly half of them given a jar of the gum. The half who were given the gum were advised to chew it for 10 minutes in the morning and evening. They also received standard advice on looking after their teeth. Among the women who were given the sugar-free gum, 549 out of 4,349 pregnancies were preterm, said the researchers on February 3 at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s Annual Pregnancy Meeting. Even though it still sounds like a lot, that’s a huge difference compared with the group who didn’t receive the gum. Among those women, 878 out of 5,321 of the babies were born before 37 weeks.

The team also wants to look into the development of the children born prematurely and those born on time. “No matter how cost-effective an intervention may be, we still want to make sure you’re making a difference in somebody’s life,”says Aagaard, “and the ultimate outcome is how do those kiddos do.” Aagaard and her team are planning to research more on what’s going on at the microbial level to understand how better oral health reduces premature birth. Parker Solar Probe captures the first visible-light images of Venus’ surface BEN NIVERA

ASA’s Parker Solar Probe has taken visible-light images of the surface of Venus from space for the first time. Venus is covered in thick clouds, and its surface is usually covered from sight. But in two recent flybys, Parker used its Wide-Field Imager, or WISPR, to capture the surface of the planet in wavelengths of the visible spectrum – the type of light visible to a human eye. The WISPR is an imaging instrument used by the Parker Solar Probe. Its main purpose is to capture visible light images of the sun’s corona, solar winds, shocks, etc. Compiled into a video, the images show a faint glow from the surface that shows different features like continental regions, plains, and plateaus. A luminescent halo of oxygen in the atmosphere can also be seen enveloping the planet. Nicola Fox, division director for the Heliophysics Divisions at NASA Headquarters, said that they were

thrilled with the information that the Parker Solar Probe has given them. “Parker continues to outperform our expectations, and we are excited that these novel observations taken during our gravity assist maneuver can help advance Venus research in unexpected ways,” he added. Images like these can help scientists have a better understanding on other planets. It can help them learn more about the planet’s geography, the minerals present, and the planet’s evolution. Even though the probe was designed to observe the sun, it must make regular flybys of Venus. This is due to the fact that the gravity of the planet pulls the probe, tightening its orbit and bringing it closer to the sun. This assist from Venus has helped the Parker Solar Probe to become the first ever probe to enter the sun’s atmosphere, which made headlines last December. While Parker Solar Probe’s primary goal is solar science, these flybys are

providing extra data that weren’t expected at the mission’s launch. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are planning to launch more spacecraft headed to Venus. With NASA’s DAVINCI and VERITAS missions and ESA’s EnVision mission, scientists would receive more images and samples of Venus’ atmosphere. These images would also help remap the surface at a higher resolution with infrared wavelengths. “By studying the surface and atmosphere of Venus, we hope the upcoming missions will help scientists understand the evolution of Venus and what was responsible for making Venus inhospitable today,” said Lori Glaze, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters. “While both DAVINCI and VERITAS will use primarily near-infrared imaging, Parker’s results have shown the value of imaging a wide range of wavelengths.” [R]

P eople around the world are terrified once more as sounds of warfare–gunshots, bombs, and the screams of the Ukrainian citizens echo throughout Ukraine, once again disrupting the world peace we longed to maintain. Protests spark across Russia as their president, Vladimir Putin, initiated the invasion. What is his goal here? What’s with his game? I guess we’ll never know clearly, however, we must still know the story to have a much better understanding of the situation.

It was already a huge issue before, as pressure continued to build between Ukraine and Russia. The very invasion started on February 24, when Putin tried to invade the eastern Ukrainian territory of Donbas. Recently, Russia attacked some Ukrainian oil and gas facilities, resulting in huge explosions after an air raid siren was heard in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. It is clear that Russia wants to dominate the world of geopolitics even more. However, that will never be an excuse for the bloodshed in the war.

Russia’s invasion garnered outrage, of course. From the Ukrainian citizens themselves to their own citizens, the people gathered their courage and protested against the Russian president’s decisions. The western countries also placed sanctions against Russia, which would bring Russia’s economy down by a significant percent. Ukraine also severed diplomatic ties with Russia, and even China, Russia’s long-term ally, has refused to support Russia’s aggression.

Support for Ukraine from around the world has been immensely outpouring, with people protesting and calling upon their governments to help Ukraine, and at the same time, to punish Russia. As we have discussed earlier, even Russian citizens longed for their government to stop the ongoing invasion, and it shows that even the Russians know that they do not want any blood to be spilled. A picture that shows a Russian holding a placard with the words, “I’m sorry for being Russian” haunt different social media platforms–which is just devastating because we could see that even the Russian citizens are only dragged into this war by their government, no matter how much they didn’t want to take part in it. The effects of war shouldn’t be taken lightly. Not only did it rattle the global stock markets, but it had also affected the price of oil and gas due to the sanctions placed on Russia. However, there is more to this than the usual economic and geographic changes as the lives of people are at stake. As of Sunday, February 28, Ukraine’s health ministry reported that 352 civilians,

including 14 children, have been killed in the war since the start of the Russian invasion, and a total of 1,684 have been wounded. Nothing should come at a cost of human lives, especially innocent human lives that were dragged into the war by their leaders. Ukrainian citizens had no part in this, as well as the Russian citizens, and no matter what you see it from, wars always go both ways– both sides will always be affected. Additionally, joking about the issue isn’t excused, as we have said a while ago, real people with real lives are at stake. Dark memes that tend to make fun of their situation shouldn’t be a thing, even if it is only for what others call “dark humor”. Let us raise awareness about the issue instead, and share more information about their situation. Let those who are able to donate, donate to legit and trusted sites. We should have leaders that excel in diplomacy and compromise rather than engaging in violence and aggression, and at the same time, don’t let any of their political ideals get in the way of their country’s wellbeing. Nothing should be solved with violence, and it will always be ineffective as it affects both sides. As questions remain unanswered as of the time being, the conflict could have been avoided, even in 2014, when the tensions started. If our country faces a dictator such as Putin, we could never stand a chance–at least alone. Keeping diplomatic ties should be the best move here, as a compromise would have considered both sides. However, since things have been unclear for our part, all we could do is to prepare ourselves for such an issue and try to avoid it as much as possible–by selecting the right leaders, of course. [R]

and misinformation are two of the driving forces that determines the elections, and in a country like the Philippines, wherein a whopping 65% of the 107 million people rely on Facebook for news, it is inevitable that most of these Filipinos will be exposed to fake news.

It became a serious issue in the 2022 presidential elections, as a number of candidates are allegedly using troll farms to gain support online, and became the topic as well for their interviews and debates. The solution proposed by presidential aspirant Senator Manny Pacquiao is to control the social media platforms directly to curb the spread of these fake news.

However, one could say that the direct intervention of the government in social media platforms will be considered as media censorship. Yes, the disinformation campaign will really be hard to combat against, however, the direct control of the government will only lead to certain abuses and the constant

The persistent harassment and threats targeted towards journalists and women are only some of the numerous problems that Facebook have failed to address. This shows that the problem doesn’t only stop on the rapid spread of disinformation and misinformation, nor does it only happen during elections–it has already rooted itself in society as more and more users interact and engage in these social media platforms. The cooperation between Facebook and the government should be focused, but it should not amount to the direct intervention of the government. The fact checking groups are slowly

being introduced to the different platforms, however we could see that this still isn’t enough. The idea of fake news isn’t new to us, and it is realistic to say that it will never go away. The very solution that we need to curb disinformation and misinformation is the education of people, as well as what I have said earlier, the cooperation of the government with the platforms. By being educated, people become critical thinkers, and with it comes a judgement of discerning the facts from the fake news. With education, the socalled “different faces of truth” will be much clearer, until the people piece the whole truth together. Sadly, our society has forgotten that democracy does not only stop with the freedom of choices, but it includes the responsibility that comes with it. The responsibility–that of weighing the given facts rationally, and that of engaging with others to question their opinions es-

pecially when their so called “opinions” run differently from the truth. We must remember that although every person is entitled to their own opinions, they are not entitled to their own truths. There is only one truth, and it is dangerous if people keep tolerating the blatant distortion of the truth with the means of misinformation and disinformation. And so, let us be the solution to this never-ending spread of fake news, distinguish the fake from the face of truth. [R]

From being single and alone, towards being a couple and together. Isn’t it that love is somewhat similar to that of being radical? Yes. Love is the most radical of all

human action. To actually love would surely swiftly and thoroughly change one’s life. Love goes beyond one’s comfort zones and embrace the uncertainties. Loving someone is to change. Change in such ways that we are no longer just for self alone but there would always be another that will be there.

ave you ever made a separate social media account, page, or channel which is completely different from your personal account with a fictitious name? Well, think again after this bill which included this "out-oftopic" provision that can endanger your privacy. The bill in question? House Bill 5793 or Senate Bill 2395, otherwise known as the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card Registration Act. As of now, days are ticking if the bill will be signed into law or revisions will have to be made. In 2020 alone, the PNP and NBI recorded 6,110 cybercrime offenses such as phishing and computer-related identity theft. Private telecommunication companies have took steps in protecting the nation from cybercrimes such as Globe Telecom blocking over 1.1 billion spam and scam text messages and around 7,000 mobile numbers linked to fraud. The SIM Card Registration Bill has noble intentions. S p e c i f i c a l l y, the legislation seek to curb the rise of SIM card, internet, and electronic-aided crimes. Text scams, bank frauds, hacking incidents, hate speech, trolling, and online defamation were examples of these crimes mentioned. Before the sale and activation of a SIM card for the end user, telecommunication entities shall first require a registration of the SIM cards. Meaning, before using a telco’s services when buying a sim card, you must first register it, therefore presenting any valid ID (e.g., Driver’s License, NBI Clearance, SSS/GSIS Card, and School ID for minors) and declaring your identity in the whole process. Additionally, end users are required to update and verify the information every 180 days of the SIM card’s activity.

However, that is just the tip of the iceberg. The issue that is on fire is that additional “out-of-topic” provision, in which the bill includes social media account registration. Sounds skeptical, right? There are a lot of problems that this additional provision may bring. When the bill is enacted to law, it means that all new social media accounts must be registered first with the government before its activation. When you disclose your personal information before using a registered social media account, your identity is now exposed. One of the grounds for punishment is making fictitious accounts (Yes, even your stan, parody, alt or any accounts and pages). It is saddening that most legislators immediately implying anonymity with bad acts than to being a measure of privacy and a form for individuals to express themselves without compromising their real identity. Consequently, an online petition has been running around stating that the additional provisions strips us the additional security that a lot of individuals can utilize, such as public figures, celebrities, human rights activists, victims of domestic abuse, and bullying, and even the individuals who just want to differentiate their personal life and online life. Another analogy regarding anonymity is how book authors may use code names or pen names to publish a piece any output, written or as a form of creative media. Most of us know that our freedom of expression is slowly being stripped from us with the enactment of the controversial Anti-Terrorism Law being the frontliner of it and the multiple cases of killings related to red-tagging. Upon requiring the registration of social media accounts, the government or any entity may use it as a form of surveillance, which completely voids the

implementation of RA 10173 or the Data Privacy Act. This law is very dangerous if placed on to the wrong hands. As of my knowledge, North Korea has this ruling. We need to understand that North Korea uses social media sites made and controlled by the government and our country’s state is completely different from those of North Korea. We usually make social media accounts using our email, in which it can be easily made in email sites such as Gmail and Outlook with just a few clicks. I wonder how will the government force these email and social media sites into implementing this policy exclusively for the Philippines. I believe that we have the right to a personal online space without the requirement of any government surveillance. We should have the freedom to access our social media sites without our privacy being compromised and exposed. We need to make sure that we use the freedom that we have in doing what is right and in accordance with truth and justice as that one popular adage says "with great power comes with great responsibility." ery Philippine election season, it is undeniable that all sorts of things may happen. Politicians will have their political rallies and debates; supporters will have their clash in order to “prove” something to other people who support other candidates other than theirs. In short, the high-tensioned and fast-paced election season in the Philippines could make all hell break loose. In order to maintain harmony, fairness and honesty on all facets of the elections, COMELEC issued Resolution No. 10730 last November 17, 2021 which backed up Republic Act 9006 or the Fair Election Practices Act of 2009. With the opening season for national campaigning commencing last February 8, the citizens must know this for they can exercise vigilance in ensuring the enforcement of these rules. In light of emerging public sentiments against unwarranted privacy intrusion in digital space, it is decided by the poll body to specifically ban the use of “micro targeting” in political advertising with the exception of

“geographical location, except a radius around a specific location, age, and gender." Additionally, it is said that “contextual targeting” may also be combined in the prohibited micro targeting. COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez also stated that they will work with the social media platforms to help enforce this regulation.

True Unity: Defining the PEOPLE in People Power RENZ BAUTISTA

EDSA Revolution, which led to the toppling of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, still leaves a mark to most Filipinos. This significant event altered the course of our nation’s history and marked an avenue to begin a new era grounded in true freedom and democracy. It made headlines worldwide and showcased the unique resolve of the Filipino people. The event showed the definition of TRUE UNITY in the pursuit of truth, freedom, and justice.

The “sparks” of the people power movement started way before 1986. Aside from the autocratic dictatorship of the Marcoses and the implementation of Martial Law, the assassination of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino upon arriving at Manila International Airport from exile on August 21, 1983 became the catalyst of the revolution. The assassination incident led to people losing confidence in the Marcoses, thus triggering suspicions in the government. Defiance was observed among citizens, eventually leading to civil disobedience such as the nonpayment of taxes and a series of boycotts over publications and companies associated with the Marcoses. In addition, one of the elements that incited the revolt was the results of the 1986 Presidential/Snap Elections on February 7, 1986. The elections were flawed as there are widespread reports of tampering with election results, fraud, and manipulation during the electoral process. As a matter of fact, 30 COMELEC computer technicians initiated a walkout to protest the deliberate poll manipulation to favor Ferdinand Marcos. In the

succeeding days, COMELEC eventually proclaimed Marcos as the winner of the snap elections. 50 opposition members of the Congress also initiated a walkout as a protest. The Filipino people rejected the election results and insist that Corazon “Cory” Aquino was the true winner, therefore gaining more support from the masses. The next building block used to initiate the massive movement was the call of Cardinal Sin over Radio Veritas to aid rebel leaders, Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile, and AFP Vice Chief of Staff Fidel Ramos. Cardinal Sin called for solidarity and support and wished for the avoidance of violence and bloodshed. Despite a chance of dispersal of the government, civilians still flocked to EDSA to show their support. Despite the revolution having no core leader, the movement was a product of the unity of multiple sectors: the mass media, the church, the military, and the people belonging to various walks of life. The movement is considered the highest epitome of democracy as the people are the true “leaders” and the catalyst for change. The EDSA People Power Revolution was not just a revolution because of sympathy for a certain person. It is a movement that speaks volumes for the pursuit of freedom mainly driven by the PEOPLE. This is what makes the EDSA Revolution completely different from other well-known revolts in history such as those led by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. May we remember the significance of how the people can turn the tides of our social and political landscape as what Ninoy Aquino said, “The Filipino is worth dying for.” This is what defines true unity, true people power. Valentines shouldn’t be the only celebration

recognized for the month of February, but also the National Arts Month. This valuable label for the month of February was promulgated by President Corazon Aquino in 1991. Presidential proclamation No. 683 declares February of every year as National Arts Month to celebrate the artistic excellence and pay tribute to the uniqueness and diversity of the Filipino heritage and culture. As part of the celebration of National Arts Month, we are also to celebrate every artist who gave great recognition to our country in forms of many and different kinds of art, and for the majestic talent they hold. For this National Arts Month, we are to give the focal point of this year’s celebration with the theme “Sining ng Pag-Asa". Not only Filipinos, but the whole world has gone through so much because of this pandemic. For these times, we can use art as a source of hope, and continue to fight admits the pain and sufferings that this pandemic keeps giving us. Art could also be a source of joy, relaxation, and peace of mind in these challenging times. There are many people who has still yet to give up, and express their feelings of hope through art, and encourage people and help them remain standing.

Art has made great contribution in history, and still up to this day; For, everything we see in this world is art. Art is like matter, it’s everywhere and everything. Like matter, arts should also matter. The artistic personality of Filipinos should be preserved! I believe that art still evolves up till this day, and it will surely evolve more in the future, it would evolve by the changes in the environment, or even influences. Anyhow, I'm sure it would be beautiful. Starting from now... May we not only celebrate Valentines for the month of February, but may we also consider National Arts Month as something worth celebrating. Let us keep in mind that even in these challenging times, there is still hope, and we just need to seek it from above. Changing lives a heart

" e did not regret the things that we did. We only regret the things that we did not do.” Love is a double-edged decision and emotion at the same time. When we enter the dome of admitting our feelings to someone, there are only two possible outcomes: either they accept and it blooms to a happy relationship or they politely deny us. The number of people crying over rejection, the number of people celebrating over fulfillment in the name of love, and the number of people trying to move on – all of these are the testaments to the unpredictable results that could be extracted from loving. The biggest words that fill the air afterwards? – Regrets, What ifs, and chances. With all that is happening in this world, we are truly in need of an avenue that will stand as sources of guidance and wisdom on love. Every February, it has been a tradition for the Lasallian Rheims to host a Valentine’s special event that would be focusing on love in the students’ context. Rheims, after months of work and preparation, hosted the LCM: Love, Courtship, and Marriage last February 18. LCM is a gametalk show that featured ASJ teachers as players in the “Teachers’ Feud” and as advisors in the talk show proper. Rooting from the purpose of providing Lasallian guidance

on love for the ASJ students, this project was envisioned by the Rheims team under the leadership of Atasia Pineda, the Event Director, backed up by Lance Crisostomo and John Czar Salaguinto, pillars of the Editorial Board for Sy 2021 – 2022. Undeniably, LCM is one of the projects that is “for the students, by the students” which echoes the passion for service of the Rheims team and our love for our craft. Through the efforts of the Rheims TWG, Rheims made things that seemed impossible to be possible. LCM was not only about the Rheims TWG, but also the School Council who supported the team ever since the beginning. The School Council headed by Mr. Richard Pineda (Principal), Ms. Vicky Gallardo (Vice Principal), Mr. Joel Pascual (Finance Head), and Ms. Daisy Romero (School Consultant) did not only approve the proposal, but they also provided ideas, insights, and much support that helped the team elevate the show from a simple talk show to a gametalk show. Their full support and trust to the team because the boost of confidence that the Rheims TWG needed to overcome all obstacles and challenges along the way. For the Teachers’ Feud, three male teachers named “Team Mister Left” and three female teachers named “Team Miss Right” competitively answered three

questions that inquired on 1) what are the gifts that couples usually give each other during Valentine’s Day and 2) what are the qualities that people look into in picking their partners. Teachers Feud served as the cool, light portion of the show before diving into serious business. After the grueling exchange of answers, team Mister Left with Mr. Al Mojica, Mr. JM Malangis, and Mr. Mervince Fortuno aced the game, 2-0. After some time, LCM shifted into serious business when the talk show proper commenced. For this year, our “Duo-Tagapayo”, Mr. Cris Dulutan and Ms. Cyril Mamaril, and our hosts explored love on the level of what students normally experience in these times. To be specific, two contemporary love concepts were highlighted in the talk show proper – Unrequited love and Long-Distance Relationships (LDR). But the question is, why unrequited love and LDR? For starters, these two topics were the central themes of the stories sent by anonymous students who reached out to the LCM team. Also, Dr. Dianne Grande Ph.D. in her article about unrequited love showed that 98% of the worldwide population has experienced unrequited love (either as the one who did not give the love back or the one on the receiving end) and millions of people are experiencing or have experienced LDR especially in this pandemic time. the trail does not stop there as researches revealed that 40% of all LDR relationships fall apart after 4-5 months. With all the negative turnouts that these two topics provide, it can surely break people into a million pieces. As the discussion between the hosts and guests, two golden questions rose to the occasion: 1) What are the important factors in an LDR or in love in general? And 2) Should all chances be taken? Communication, Commitment, Consistency, Trust, and Time – these are the five fundamental factors emphasized by our tagapayos that will solidify the foundation of every relationship. Our tagapayos stated that all these five factors must be present since it builds the solid foundation for every relationship to stay strong. “It is through communication, commitment, and consistency that we build the framework for our relationships while it is through trust and time that this relationship blossoms to something greater and stronger,” as the summary of their advices implied. On the question regarding chances, our tagapayos agreed that we should take all the chances that we have but we must also be ready for what may happen after. Mr. Cris and Ms. Cyril said that we must ensure ourselves that we are ready to commit and to stay consistent once we

grab these chances. Once you take the chance, it will already involve the feelings of others (which we may hurt with one wrong actions). Yes, taking these chances may be “high risk, high reward” but at the end of it all, either we become successful in committing or we learn something which will help us mature to be better individuals for the right person that awaits us in the future. LCM was definitely a success. The Rheims TWG has succeeded in providing the Lasallian guidance that our co-students needed in this time and age. The show has definitely helped the ASJ community understand the complex idea of loving. More than that, the Rheims TWG proved their commitment to their call of service. Four weeks of sleepless nights, technical preparations, editing, and program making were nothing compared to the joy and feedback that the ASJ community had for the show. this pandemic brought big changes especially on our technology. We opted to advance and adapt faster to technology than usual. The face-to-face activities are now usually held online to support lockdowns. One of the affected ones are the education of the kids and teens. Through the internet, they can use different platforms to learn more and as a part of means to communicate to the teacher as well. As we know, internet can be a double edged sword as it can harm in different conditions if not handled properly. Since there are many ways to connect and to contact people in the internet, there are also many ways that it can be used for deceiving people. One of challenges that could be faced by the user is phishing. It refers to a deception wherein the scammer will ask or for the personal information like email address, passwords, and others. This can be done through messages, email, and website that looks reliable but isn't. An example of this is the scamming of many BDO Unibank users through illegal transfer to the UnionBank account of Mark Nagoyo wherein Nagoyo means to make a fool out of someone. With this incident, it is good to take note of security measures. First is to always have a strong passwords. This does not only applies to adults account holder but also to the kids and teens as they will bring this habit of securing themselves when they grow up. An example of this is to think of a phrase containing what-

ever description you want and unusual numbers you are familiar of but not with others. Then, the initial letters of the phrase can be used and varying the capital and small letters depending on the pattern you want together with the numbers you have thought of a while ago. After securing the passwords, one can be cautious of instant messages, calls, and emails containing the questions about one's personal information. Lastly, make the kids and teens aware of the secured sites by telling them to check the upper search bar if there is a lock icon that means the website is secured. Another problem that arise is piracy which refers to act of sharing copyrighted content illegally. It is important for the young ones to carefully write rightful credits to the owners and to seek permission of the owners of the materials before sharing it to other people. Citation tools can be used for writing references for projects to avoid plagiarism or offense of copying someone else's work as well. Cyber-stalking and cyber-bullying can also be encountered on internet specifically usual in social media platforms. Both can refer to any kind of threatening or humiliation to another user that causes irritation and fear to the victim. It is good to remind youth that even the simple act of sharing an embarrassing picture of a friend without permission can already affect the person who is in the picture. It might cause insecurity to the victim. Also, name-calling and embarrassing someone can be subjective to a law-

Another to be remind of is to be careful of sharing too much information through posts in social media. Posting too much information can be beneficial to predators in the internet. For example, a teen who posted of the information of being alone at the home can give a hint to thieves on who will be their next target will be. Therefore, addresses and contact numbers should not be shared in the social media platforms so that the identity is hidden from the predators. Also, sharing too much information can be used by someone to make a dummy account of the victim and destroy his or her reputation. One way to protect oneself is to make one's media into private mode. These are just some of the challenges that can be met by kids and teens while using the internet. It is given that internet provides people a place to learn, interact, discover, and play. With its vast capability, it is necessary for people may it be young or adult to be responsible netizens where everyone can maximize fully this good opportunity. Being alert and vigilant all the time in the use of internet can help prevent these possible problems. Parents and guardians too have the responsibility of being the role model for their children so they can take measures like talking to their children and monitoring the activities without stepping over the line. “Be My Valentine?”: Flowers as a Love Language MARIELLE NAVARRO

From the red rose being a widely famous

declaration of “I love you” to something lesser known like edelweiss that signifies courage and devotion, flowers have been used by many to those around them how they truly feel. All the way in the past when people were more expected to not be so direct in words, flowers have been a common way to converse and express emotions to another. Until now, even if normal social customs are no longer needed to be so withheld, flowers are still used when saying what you mean is just not enough. The language of flowers is fascinating in itself for having so many to choose from, a seemingly infinite array of options to be able to say what you feel. And yet, even if there are so many ways to use flowers to talk, they are mostly used to express a certain feeling especially in the contemporary world: love. Red roses are common, but there are also orchids that mean beauty and refinement, daisies that mean loyalty, and forget-me-nots that symbolize true love. These can be seen on one specific time, the day of love itself: Valentine’s Day.

However, flowers of love can also transcend romance. We can see moments in life and history where flowers are given as a symbolic love. An example being people giving out yellow flowers to those in the military during the anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986. Most flowers in this color usually signifies joy, happiness, and friendship; an offering of peace for those known to train for war. It celebrates the preciousness of solidarity between those who fight for freedom through brawn and those who fight for freedom through gentler means for equal love of the country. There are many other flowers that speak the language of love and each one eligible to be given to those who you love. A single bloom or a grand bouquet, love is not measured by the quantity but the intention behind every petal handed to you. Flowers have the ability to speak louder than words, and if you were asked a question in this form of fragrance and color, what would you say back? [R]

Leche Flan BEN NIVERA

here’s no doubt that Filipinos LOVE eating. In this country, you can see food wherever you go! Birthdays? Food! Celebrations? Food! Farewell parties? There’s also food! If you’re bored, eat it out! If you’re upset, just eat! If you’re not feeling well, food’s the answer! Ever since, food has been tied to Filipino culture. Throughout our history, the influence of other countries have remained and shaped what we now know as “traditional Filipino food”. Currently, there are hundreds of delicacies considered as traditional Filipino food ranging from appetizers to main courses and even desserts! In a country where the menu is thicker than a dictionary, leche flan excels at staying relevant. Leche flan is a heavy custard dessert made with condensed milk and lots of egg yolks with a soft caramel on top. Even though the name quite literally translates to “Milk Flan,” leche flan tends to have a richer taste than the flan from latin countries. This is due to the fact that Filipino leche flans use plenty of eggs, which adds to the density and the taste of the dessert. Just from the first look, leche flan already looks quite amazing. The smooth and creamy appearance can leave mouths watering. If the appearance itself can make jaws drop, then you won't be disappointed with the taste! It has a rich, toasted sugar caramel on top of the perfectly sweet, very milky and eggy taste; two layers of perfect perfection. With no pun intended, the taste is literally chef’s kiss, the perfect dessert for a sweet tooth. If I were to rate it, it would be a 10/10, would eat again. [R]

When he opened his eyes, he was met with a seemingly endless darkness; one

that consumed his senses, almost like he was incomplete. His arms were there, he knew that as he flailed them around like a child. His torso was intact despite the ache spread all across it and perhaps, that is what signifies its attachment to the lower part of his body. His legs were in another state of discomfort, a tingling sensation enveloping his skin from the inside and scrambling to get out. He put a hand on his thigh just to check if there was anything wrong. There wasn’t, yet it didn’t feel right either. His lack of sight seemed to be the culprit. That sense of not knowing what he looked like, even if his body felt relatively normal after the ritual, he wasn’t sure. He didn’t know if he had sustained any injury or deformation, and that’s what left him unsure. The familiar feeling of doubt and dirty infidelity to her promises made him sick, and as he felt a warm hand on his shoulder, his mouth betrayed his heart. “What have you done?” He whispered, tears streaming down his cheeks. Hot breath grazed over the skin of his neck gently, her breath, as she seemed to hug him from behind. “My dear, do you doubt me?” He choked back a sob. Her arms tightened around him, almost too much, as she held him while his body shook. He subconsciously eased into her embrace and her warmth; a sensation he hadn’t felt in ages and one he missed. He still couldn’t see her, or anything at this point, and he had a feeling deep inside that this blindness will not be leaving as long as he stayed by her side. But as he heaved, gasping for air in tears with reassuring words and her mere self his panic melted into acceptance. Love is blind after all.
