DUTERTE OKs FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES IN MED SCHOOLS by Renz Bautista

“President Rodrigo Duterte allowed the resumption of in-person classes in medical schools and medical allied programs in areas under MGCQ, and higher educational institutions in GCQ areas with base hospitals that cater COVID-19 patients,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque affirmed in a press briefing in Malacan͂ang, Jan 26. Face-to-face classes were not allowed in schools during the quarantine period to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 and to follow the mandated health protocols by the DOH and IATF. “This is to ensure that we won’t run out of doctors,” Roque said in a statement. "Pag di natin ipagpatuloy yan, dadating ang panahon
wala tayong graduates. And with a pandemic, we need all the doctors we can have,” he added. Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Prosporo de Vera III recommended to the president that face-to-face classes should resume for a limited and progressive manner in selected universities and institutions. The government allowed the classes in the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to resume the in-person, face-toface medical internship program. It was an exemption of the community quarantine guidelines. However, the briefing did not specify the timelines for the resumption of classes.
NEW STRAIN CASES CONTINUE TO RISE

New strain of COVID-19 threatened the Philippines as cases after cases are confirmed and tested for confirmation from Jan 20-22. According to the Department of Health (DOH), eight passengers from Emirates flight 8 EK332 and five who had close contact with the first person who was confirmed to have the new strain tested positive and are under monitoring. In the press release of DOH last Jan 20, it has already passed the samples of the five with close contact with the first person who has the confirmed case to the UP Philippine Genome Center for sequencing and testing to look if these are cases of the new strain as well. In addition, 12 cases were confirmed in Bontoc town, Mountain Province and two cases were confirmed in La Trinidad, Benguet and Calamba, Laguna respectively. According to health officials, the confirmed case in the Calamba area showed that the new strain of coronavirus was in the country as early as Dec 10 since this confirmed case was record-

ed last Dec 10 and the sample was reviewed only to find out that it was a case of the new strain already. "This was part of our due diligence, and it seemed like there was nothing else to be found,” Dr. Edsel Salvana, consultant of the government task force in charge of handling the new strain, stated. DOH thanked the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and other government units for their quick actions and response in the contact tracing for those with contact with persons confirmed of the new strain. “The DOH extends its gratitude to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Regional and Local Epidemiology and Surveillance Units, the Quezon City Local Government Unit, and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong for their efforts in ensuring immediate and comprehensive contact tracing and response to mitigate further spread of the disease,” DOH stated in their press release, Jan 20 (retrieved from the official DOH website).

DOH: COVID–19 VACCINATION STARTS ON FEBRUARY by Renz Bautista
The Department of Health said that the Philippines will receive the first batch of COVID–19 vaccines in February and plans to administer 148 million doses, from seven pharmaceutical companies, to 50–70 million Filipinos this 2021. In a press briefing, Vaccine Czar Carlito Galvez, Jr. said that the Philippines will surely receive vaccines from three pharmaceutical companies: 25 million doses from Sinovac (China), 30 million doses from Covovax (India), and 2.5 million doses from Astrazeneca (UK). Several Metro Manila LGUs including Quezon City, Navotas, Pasig,
Manila, Caloocan, Makati, and Valenzuela secured a total of around 3.5 million doses of the Astrazeneca vaccine using their own funds. Other cities such as General Santos and Davao City also secured doses of the vaccine. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque pointed out that the vaccines should be sourced with the approval of the national government as the vaccines are under Emergency Use Authorization by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), prohibiting the commercial sale of the said vaccines. "Kapag nagbigay po tayo ng emergency use
authorization, hindi po ito maaring ibenta, hindi ito mabibili sa mga botika, o darating sa clinic at pwede tayo magpa-bakuna privately. Ito po ay maaring bilhin ng pamahalaan at gamitin sa vaccination program," FDA Director General Eric Domingo said in an interview. According to the 2020 Mid-Year report from the Malacañang, the priority areas for COVID–19 vaccination are NCR, CAR, Davao Region, and CALABARZON. Priority groups who will be given vaccines are frontline health workers, senior citizens, indigent population, and uniformed personnel.
2021 Will Be Better, Worse, or the Same? by Jade Magno
High school students expressed their expectations for the year 2021 in an online survey and interview conducted this January. In the survey, 66% of the respondents hope that 2021 will be better than in 2020. "I wish for 2021 to be good to us and rain some good things for us. I just want things to go back the way they were," Grade 10 student Mervinne Militar said. According to Militar, he can't say if 2021 will be better due to the current state of the Philippines. He thinks that there is no progress with the COVID-19 situation; however, he still hopes for the better. that we may always be prepared for the worse but hope for the best this year." Shuan Co, a grade 12 student, said. Co added that this year may be impacted by the events of 2020. "But despite the many obstacles to come, let us always remember that we are all strong and we will make it," Co stated. On the other hand, 21% of the respondents think that 2021 will be the same as in 2020, and 4% voted that this year will be worse than last year. The survey was answered by 56 grade 7 students, 50 from grade 8 and 9, 51 grade 10 students, 34 students from grade 11, and 35 from grade 12.

Jan 9 - Academy of Saint John held the 2nd quarter Card day, with advisers holding conferences to meet with student’s parents to discuss their child’s behavior and grades. In an interview, Math and Science coordinator Mr. Cris Dulutan stated that the grades were encoded on time due to the teachers increased familiarity with the online grading system. This is in contrast to the first card day which was moved back to give ample time for the subject teachers to encode grades and to double-check their class records. "Compared to the last quarter, most of the teachers are now familiar with the steps and procedures needed to follow in encoding the grades in the system," Dulutan said. According to him, after the second quarter exams, teachers immediately started checking, recording, and encoding grades in the system. "Even at Christmas break, there are teachers who continue encoding grades para matapos before card day," he added. Dulutan noted that a series of counter-checking was conducted, just like last quarter, to prevent errors before sending out the report cards. On the other hand, the Math and Science coordinator mentioned that the card day was still executed online to ensure everyone's safety amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

PH falling behind the Vaccine Race? INSIGHTS Seann Carpizo
January 30, 2020. At this date, our country had its first ever confirmed case of the COVID-19 as it started to take the world by storm. And now, it has been a whole year of cases spiraling out of control and exponentially growing by the day. However, throughout the months, despite the repercussions and damages dealt, progress has been steadily made in ensuring a way to fight against the virus— vaccines. Several medical companies and facilities have led their efforts into creating potential vaccines against the virus. A number of them have surfaced: Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen, and Novavax, the first two of which are being already authorized for implementation, including in our country. However, the government has struggled getting its footing in launching vaccination programs. According to President Duterte, it has been difficult due to wealthy nations prioritizing their own citizens first. Last January 17, the number of COVID-19 cases in our country have reached past the milestone of over 500,000. All the more reason for why we need those programs up and running around the country as early as possible. Fortunately, it might be close. “It is expected that we can start our rollout this first quarter in February,” vaccine chief

Carlito Galvez told the Senate Committee. According to him, the first batch will likely be either Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, or Sinovac through COVAX, in a number of around 15-40 million doses or more. COVAX is a global facility that equally distributes vaccines for developing countries and is led by the World Health Organization, the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. With these vaccines entering our country in hopefully a few days from now, our next obstacle is the distribution and costs for the vaccination across the country, but until then, we can only wait. The government has already taken up and wasted a lot of time with unnecessary priorities even during the pandemic. Despite all the cases that have risen as time went on, a lack of proper management is rather very, very disappointing. Since the government has lacked in providing quick mitigation measures against COVID-19 for its citizens, once the vaccines arrive, expectations of swift action and judgement are sure to be anticipated. If they fail us once again, I can only imagine what will happen in the coming months. With those following measures put into place, let us all hope for a speedy recovery for our country. During the COVID-19 pandemic, physical sports such as basketball, volleyball, and other major sports that involve physical contact were not allowed because of the implementation of the minimum public health standards mandated by the InterAgency Task Force (IATF). On the other side of the spectrum, the field of gaming and esports
flourished during the quarantine. With numerous tournaments conducted online, esports has been the new trend of sports during these times. According to an article published by Darren Vitug, the commissioner of ‘The Nationals’, the country’s franchise-based e-sports league, esports started a long time ago since cyber cafes sprouted in the country at the early 2000s. “How well did we perform in terms of response and action in the past 11 months?”- The city government of General Trias has been able to limit the number of cases of COVID-19 affected people by 2,377 with 2,283 recoveries, 41 deaths and 53 active cases tallied as of January 30. and implementation and regulation of quarantine protocols across the city. The question remains, “Was the city government able to respond in the best way possible?” and “Were there lapses in the response of our local government?” It is indeed very plausible that the government was able to give food/grocery packages to the residents of the various barangays in the city. Through this, they were able to lessen the worries of people on what to serve on the table on a daily basis.

Continuation from RPTD, Philippine Esports, the Basics These cafes provided new form of entertainment, in which players will not play against AI or switching controllers, as these players compete directly with each other. As the numbers of players increase, so is the innate competitiveness of these games. Players enjoy these tournaments for primarily two reasons: the prizes, and the game experience. Players also look forward for the community and social interaction, to make new friends, just like athletes in sports. Unlike in traditional sports where strength, flexibility and innate traits such as height matters, esports requires less physical skills, but more of knowledge of game mechanics, game performance, and endurance in playing series of games. Trainings are similar in traditional sports. Communication, game knowledge, skill, patience, and team chemistry are just some things developed in esports. Esports was included in the 30th SEA Games held in the Philippines last December 2019. It featured titles Dota 2, MLBB, Hearthstone, Tekken, and AOV with Philippines gaining medals on all five events, I can say that the esports industry is a thriving industry in the Philippines. Philippine teams such as TNC Predator and Bren Esports has its
own share on representing the Philippines in international events and world championships in Dota 2 and MLBB respectively. There are other titles featured in esports tournaments such as CSGO, PUBG, LOL, and many more. Some people say that esports is not technically sports notwithstanding the fact that esports players represent our country in international tournaments. Nowadays, sports not just acknowledges the physicality of an activity, as observed in extremely physical sports such as boxing and basketball. Sports now utilizes the mental strength and endurance of a person, as observed in esports. The esports industry offers a lot of opportunities especially in the pandemic era where online games gain popularity. Many people, especially the older generations view gaming as a negative activity as a result of wrong implications influenced by media. The society should accept that gaming, an exponentially growing activity, can make the living of many people. Esports is now a platform which unites thousands, or even millions of people. As such, the society should recognize esports and not demean the industry like the other competitive and recreational activities.
Mt Pinatubo: Will it Strike Again? by Seann Carpizo
The sheer cataclysmic power of Mt. Pinatubo erupting on June 15, 1991 shook not only the Philippines, but the whole world. Spewing out more than a cubic mile of molten rocks and tephra, a blanket of ash covered the sky—making it the 2nd largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. It was a catastrophic and historical event; we are fortunate to not have been present in its wake. But can it happen again? January 27, 2021, data reports have shown that a number of approximately 826 earthquakes have been observed occurring in the vicinity of Mt. Pinatubo for the past week. This put the experts in PHIVOLCS on alert, as the event wasn’t seen or “normal in recent years”, PHIVOLCS Chief Renato Solidum said. However, it still remains at alert zero, meaning that in the foreseeable future, an eruption should be highly unlikely. The earthquakes only ranged from 1 to 2.5 magnitudes, which were relatively low in

comparison to the thousands of earthquakes that happened during the 1991 eruption; one of which reached a staggering 7.8 magnitude strength. "This development serves to remind us once again that several faults occur around the volcano and that these can generate earthquake activity that can be sometimes imperceptible and harmless but that can also sometimes be damaging," PHIVOLCS said in its advisory. Vigilance remains to be observed by the experts as they continue to monitor the surrounding areas. Despite the extremely low risk of another calamitous eruption, it is something we cannot fathom nor afford to witness again; even more so now in these trying times in a viral pandemic. For now, further analysis and observations should be accounted for before jumping to any definitive conclusions. But all things considered, we can be assured that we won’t be experiencing anything of the sort anytime soon.

Continuation from Eurus, City Government COVID response - Plausible yet Insufficient and Inconsistent
Together with this is the distribution of educational assistance to students, cash incentives for members of the Barangay Health Emergency Response Team or BHERT, and financial assistance for teachers and senior citizens ages 80-99 years old. The response action doesn’t end there. The local government also conducts Aggressive Community Testing, particularly conducted by the City Health Office, giving Gentrisen͂os the opportunity to undergo RT-PCR Swab Test for free. They have also conducted Rapid Diagnostic Testing for Barangay Nutrition Scholars and barangay Population Officers with the help of Metrobank Foundation and Project Ark. Both programs aim to help citizens of General Trias to keep themselves healthy as they combat this COVID-19 disease. The biggest program or project that the government had successfully completed was the COVID-19 facility, particularly the isolation facility, built in Barangay Santiago. Its purpose is to house the COVID-19 positive patients and help them recover until they reach the point that they test negative to the said disease. This facility is complete with all necessary equipment and stocks needed by medical frontliners and COVID-19 positive patients. In line with this, the Main Health Center and TB DOTS Center of the city situated in barangay Pinagtipunan was already inaugurated by Mayor Ony Ferrer and are open for service already. While all of these programs and actions were certainly positive and meaningful, there are still lapses in the response system of the city. The response system would certainly be significant and completely successful if and only if strict implementation of such quarantine protocols by the barangays are in line with this and of course discipline from the people itself. As the province was placed in General Community Quarantine a few months back, people have already started to treat it as a go signal that they can already go back to their normal way of living. As time progresses, it seems like people have already forgotten the essence of the quarantine which is to mitigate the transmission of the said disease. This possibly led to the blowing up of cases in the city. Netizens, who are apparently citizens of General Trias, have been ranting and complaining through the comment section of the COVID-19 Update of the city government in their official facebook account. The complaints do cover a lot of aspects which really needs to be taken seriously. Starting off with the complaints on the consistency of the “ayuda” from the government. even reach the citizens. Considering the fact that it is the people’s right to receive such help in these trying times, it is very infuriating to learn about this. If the people didn’t receive any then who benefited from it? The most alarming thing that people complain about is the implementation and compliance with the quarantine protocols. Citizens from various barangays, particularly from barangay Navarro and San Francisco, have complained in the comment section of the COVID updates of the city government. A netizen from barangay Navarro commented that they are not feeling any actions from authorities and people don’t have discipline and are being careless that is why the number of cases in their barangay ranked 2nd across the whole city. On the other hand, a netizen from San Francisco reported children are already going outside of their houses and are found everywhere. This is one of the main reasons why their barangay ranked 1st in terms of number of cases across the whole city. Clearly, the barangay units have things to explain. Even they themselves are reported that they are not following protocols, particularly the wearing of face masks and face shields. These barangay units are the ones who must be of good example to their respective barangays yet they are part of the violating group. They deserve the respect and salute since they are people who are serving the people but these actions are giving the impression that they aren’t taking things seriously leading to people acting in line with their example. The local barangay units must step up in this combat against COVID-19. Does the city government have a fair share of blame for this? The answer is yes. These barangay units who are violating the protocols and guidelines are growing in number because at some point, they are not being scolded or told off. People are also violating protocols because there are loose ends that enable them to do so. Considering all circumstances, the response of the city government to this pandemic was good to partially great; however, there are still lapses and loose ends to work on and act upon. Consistency must be instilled and observed in the government’s action and response plan and of course to their people. There are certain times when authorities need to be stricter in implementing protocols, rules and regulations. This is the time! If this system continues to have such loose ends, then the number of cases may blow up even more. This is a challenge for the Gentrisen͂ os, particularly to the city government which needs time and attention. Do you want the city to go back to ECQ or Enhanced Community Quarantine? Entertainment or Distraction? SO TELL ME Mitzen Sotelo
Netflix. One of the most commonly used movie and TV streaming services nowadays that almost every household has. Reportedly, Netflix surged up to 200 million subscribers this 2020. Netflix provides a variety of movies, TV shows and series that can fit to the taste of different types of people. So it’s no surprise it became so popular. This platform can be one’s go-to buddy. When lonely, just watch movies on Netflix. When stressed, open Netflix. You may find yourself stressed at the first minute and then laughing the next at some comedy TV shows. Families also gather around to watch movies, others even binge watch different kinds of series, Kdramas, and many more. Yet from all the fun and entertainment that Netflix brings us, there is also a bad side. Did you know that Netflix can also be a drug? I know it sounds ridiculous but believe me this platform can make a person “high.” Why? Because when one is engaged into something that he/she really enjoys, that person’s brain will produce a chemical called “Dopamine” which releases excitement and extreme happiness. Because of this chemical, we start to feel “high” which is similar to the feelings of those with drugs. After feeling this excitement, our brains would want to feel it again. That’s why we continue to watch movies or continue to watch a certain series leading to binge watching. That is why 73% percent of the people surveyed by Netflix admit that they’re happy when they binge watch. According to Dr. Renee Carr, Psy.D, people who bingewatch TV shows do so because, well, they’re addicted. “When binge watching your favorite show, your brain is continually producing dopamine, and your body experiences a drug-like high,” he explained. One of the most known lines we say in our head when it comes to watching on Netflix is “just one more episode,” then we press the next episode button and before we know it, we’ve already finished the whole series and it’s already 4:00 a.m. This shows that Netflix can make us undisciplined

and makes us lose the value of time management. According to Dr. Danesh Alam’s article “Three Ways TV Affects Your Health,” binge watching causes back problems brought by the poor posture we do whenever we sit or lay down to watch, Another is lack of oxygen because sitting for a long period of time can lead to minimize lung capacity. According to research by healthcare company CogniFit, sitting and binge-watching Netflix for hours at a time actually “shrinks lung capacity by a third,” causing a decreased oxygen supply to your brain and, subsequently, a decrease in your mental clarity. Family medicine physician Sophia Tolliver noted that sitting still for long periods of time could have a lasting, detrimental effect on your cardiovascular system. “Studies show that sitting for long periods of time can increase one’s risk for metabolic syndrome,” which can “increase your risk of heart disease” and stroke. Furthermore, Epidemiologist Andrea Kriska of the Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group said that every hour you spend sitting on your couch and binge-watching Netflix could increase your chance of developing diabetes by 3.4 percent, as reported by Time. As noted by the study, an all-day Netflix binge could mean a 30 percent increase in your chances of being diagnosed with the disease. This article is not meant to scare but to inform and alarm. These results are not acute, meaning they will not happen overnight. Important to note is that all of these findings had the clause “for prolonged periods of time.” So practice moderation. We can correct these mistakes by learning to set our priorities, we must be responsible enough to weigh our responsibilities over recreation. Value the essence of time for it is limited and finish what needs to be done before relaxing because you will never be at peace with what you’re doing if you’re not doing what you’re supposed to do. Netflix can either be an entertainment or a distraction, while life will always have distractions lurking in every corner, but the decision to be swayed by it or not is up to you. “Distractions destroy action. Catholic Teacher ’s Day. The day where we honor and thank our teachers for being there every step of the way in a student ’s journey of learning.
During this special day, students would surprise their teachers with gifts, flowers, cards as a token to show their thanks and love for them.
The concept of celebrating teacher’s day is not new since it can still be traced back to the 19th century. Each country has different dates on when to celebrate teacher’s day but in the Philippines, we celebrate Catholic Teacher’s Day on January 26.
Some students use one of the oldest tricks in the book where they’d act as if they were fighting to get their teacher’s attention and get their teacher to the classroom where they’d surprise him/her once he/she enters the door. In other countries, they would even hold festivals in honor of their teachers.
January 26 is the date chosen as Catholic Teacher’s Day in the Philippines, because it was on January 26, 1725, when Pope Benedict XIII granted the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools a Bull of Approbation, recognizing the new society as a new religious family in the church and it was when he confirmed most of the ideas of Saint John Baptist De La Salle. This day has been celebrated ever since, until the United Nations declared, October. 5 as the World Teacher’s Day, yet we Lasallians still celebrate Catholic Teacher’s Day until today to honor our teachers for helping in the formation of the youth.
Teachers all deserve the recognition for their commitment and passion to teach the youth, as well as for the patience and understanding they give to the students. That’s why on Catholic Teacher’s Day, may we show them the love, care, and appreciation as we celebrate our second parents.
