Refugio once again a region favorite

2A Outlook

In their 90th season of existence, the Refugio Bobcats once again remain the dominant force in 2A Division 1 in South Texas. In recent years, Region IV has usually boasted as many as three ranked teams in the top five of the Texas 2A football landscape and that should be the case again this year. After a full season of road games last year with their home stadium out of commission, the Bobcats will play their entire district schedule at home, giving the 15-2A DI favorite a less-than bumpy road to another district crown. However, the Bobcats will have some distant non-district games to travel to starting off with Bruni, then Crystal City and Sabinal Refugio returns a few veterans from last year, (eight on offense & seven on defense) and have made some moves in key positions on the offensive lines to give Junior quarterback Caleb Hesseltine a bit more time to find the many Bobcat receiving weapons. Jared Kelley, Antwaan Gross, Isaiah Avery and Ty LaFrance return as prime targets for Hesseltine. In the backfield Desantos Doomes will provide his skill at power running at the full-

back position. On defense the Bobcats have reinforced the line as well and put some speed and power hitters in the Back positions. Hayden LaFrance, J.R. Moore and Jayden Wright will act as the Refugio defense’s iron wall. Head coach Jason Herring has been preparing hard for the upcoming season. “We’re conditioning a lot because we are gonna be hitting it pretty hard this year.” Herring said. At any rate the Bobcats are ready and looking to make

another State Championship run. For Refugio, it seems yet again that they are on a path to face No. 2 Shiner in the postseason, while usually highranked Mason has dropped to No. 6. Shiner ousted Refugio, the then-defending champ last year 24-13 in the quarterfinal round and went on to win the 2020 state title. Elsewhere in the 15-2A DI, Kenedy, Three Rivers and Freer return at least five starters on each side of the ball. Kenedy returns eight on

offense and nine on defense, while Three Rivers brings back nine on offense and eight defensively. Freer brings back six on offense and five on defense to round out that trio of squads hoping to build off area playoff berths last season. In 16-2A, Premont is looking to run it back as district champions, led by running back Andrew Christian and quarterback Dos La Fuente. The Cowboys feel good about their chances to take the crown, but will have to overcome being young in the trenches on

both sides of the ball. Other teams to watch in that district are Ben Bolt and Santa Maria. Ben Bolt, which only played two games last regular season and fell in bi-district, brings back nine starters on offense and eight on defense but lacks a bit beyond that. Meanwhile, Santa Maria returns five on each side of the ball and is looking to rebound after missing the playoffs last year, but only played two games as well. La Vill also will be in the mix for a playoff spot, returning five on offense and seven on defense.

In district 16-3A DI, Corpus Christi London will open up as the favorite to win the district. The Pirates, who have seven back on offense and eight back on defense will lean on running back / linebacker Mason Arispe. The Pirates went 7-3 overall and 2-1 in district in 2020 before falling

in the bi-district playoffs in a narrow 24-21 loss to Edna. Behind London is San Diego, who have plenty of firepower coming back in 2021. Hector Garza returns as an all around weapon while Asher Gonzalez and Jorge Guerra anchor the trenches. Lyford will be led by new head coach Jerry Jauregui. The Bulldogs have five starters back on both sides of the ball, but

look for Mark Marroquin and Osmar Martinez will look to make some noise for the Bulldogs on offense. With Martinez at the helm, he is poised for a breakout season and will be aided by Gavin Martinez and Carlos Martinez in the trenches. In 16-3A DII, the Odem Owls are led by quarterback Hunter Dawson and linebacker Noah Ramirez. The Owls return nine back on offense

and nine back on defense. The Owls have the pieces in play for a big 2021 season. Hebbronville and Taft will be in the playoff mix in 2021. The Longhorns return seven on offense and nine on defense while Taft has six back on each side of the ball. The Greyhounds were also area finalists in 2020. In 15-3A DII, Karnes City will be in the playoff picture with 14 starters back from

2020. The Badgers did not make the playoffs last season and will look to right that wrong in 2021. George West is poised for a big year and will be in the district title hunt with Poth. The Longhorns have five returning on both sides of the ball and are led by two-way player Jake Snider and wide outs Nick Rutherford and Steven Gonzales.

District 15-4A DI had a strong showing in the postseason last year as every team that qualified for the postseason secured at least one playoff win. Leading that charge was the Corpus Christi Miller Bucs, who rode a second-round upset of then-No. 2 Lampasas all the way to the regional finals after finishing third in district. Calallen, meanwhile, won the district crown and made its way to the regional semis. Looking at this season Calallen remains the front runner and team to beat. The Wildcats return exactly eight on offense and eight on defense. After a run to the regional semifinals, the Wildcats look to do it again in 2021. They will be led by linebacker Colton Calloway and on offense they will need to replace Jeremiah Earls. Corpus Christi Miller will have to replace Andrew Body and will look to give the keys to Jaedyn Brown. While he will have Lonnie Adkism at his disposal, Adkism is arguably one of the top wideouts in the region. Along with Adkism as the bell cow will be running back Ethan Greenwood. De-

fensively Dae’Jon Bisby will look to anchor the defensive line for the Bucs. Port Lavaca Calhoun, which went two-deep in the postseason last year, has three back on offense and five back on defense. After falling short in the area round, the Sandcrabs will look to retool in one of the toughest districts in the region. In 16-4A DI, La Feria has six back on offense and four back on defense. Aaron Trevino will now take charge of the Lions offense and look to his younger brother Joaquin Trevino and running back E.J. Serna. Hidalgo made strong strides in 2020 and it hopes

to continue that this season as the Pirates have five back on offense and four on defense. Saul Hernandez returns to play on both the offensive and defensive line and was an allstate selection in 2020. In 16-4A DII, the Sinton Pirates are hoping to build off its trip to the regional semifinals and they have all the tools to do it as twin brothers in quarterback Rene Galvan and running back Rylan Galvan lead an offense with 10 returning starters. On defense, linebacker Jonathon Morin and defensive end Jaquae Stewart are two of nine total starters returning on that side of the ball. Rockport-Fulton brings

District 15-5A DI could be as interesting a district to watch as there is in the Coastal Bend. While Corpus Christi Veterans remains the team to beat after advancing all the way to the Class 5A state semifinal, they will have a new head coach in Ben Bitner. The Eagles return four players on each side of the ball, but one big hole that will have to be filled will be the one left by quarterback Carter Centerfit, who graduated after leading the way to the state semis. All-state wideout Cam De La Pena returns for his final season and will be a key cog in the offense after hauling in 76 catches for more than 1,200 yards and 14 scores. That will be a big help for junior quarterback Elijah Durrette. As a sophomore, Durrette did see action late in games, throwing for more than 500 yards and seven touchdowns in those instances. Defensively, linebacker Romero Lara and defensive back Nick Reyes will anchor a defense with some nice parts, such as defensive end Josiah Lewis and defensive back Luke Johnson. Also in line to compete for the 15-5A DI crown is Flour Bluff, who fell to Veterans Memorial in the state quarterfinals. The Hornets’ run was an impressive one on its own as they finished the season 112, with their only two losses

Junior wideout Joseph Graham Jr. will take up the slack on offense, while linebacker Caleb Fuentes will anchor the defense. The Favorite in the district is Mercedes with six returning starters on each side, led by quarterback Michael Cisneros, who is a third-year player who filled up the stat sheet with more than 1,400 yards passing, 500 rushing and 19 total touchdowns. CLASS 6: BATTLE READY Looking 6A Outlook

in on the RGV’s 6A districts By Kevin Narro Rio Sports Live

Heading into the new year, with teams across the RGV all being able to go through a normal offseason, it makes for an interesting bounce back year. Out of 32-6A Harlingen High will look to win the district for a second straight year. The Cards return Nathan Huerta along the defensive line and on the offensive side, Izaiah Bell looks to be the bell cow. Brownsville Hanna returns Ethan and Kriz Pena. The Pena brothers look to help lead the Hanna offense. Meanwhile San Benito supplies plenty of firepower with Jermaine Corbin and athlete Rodney Rodriguez. Meanwhile Harlingen South could be the darkhorse in a loaded 32-6A. The defense returns Levi Ince along with Jeremiah Rivera to lead the Hawk defense. In the upper Valley, PSJA North is looking to shake up the district. The Raiders return the RGV leading rusher from 2020 in Isaac Gonzalez and have Jack Lugo back who can line up on all three phases. Edinburg Vela, like PSJA North will look to lean on senior running back PJ Rivera and Justin Vega will lead the air attack.

The Sabercats are looked at as the 31-6A favorite and are always a threat to maake a lengthy postseason run. PSJA North quarterback, below, Ale Aparicio hands off the football during a spring practice earlier this season. PSJA North is slated to be a contender for a postseason spot in a tough District 31-6A that featurs teams like Edinburg Vela, Edinburg High and Mission High.

Mission has a new coach in Danny Longoria. The Eagles will be anchored by linebacker Luis Balderas and running back Damian Cortez. Edinburg High like Mission is under a new head coach. Rene Guzman returns to his alma mater and will look to get Edinburg back in the playoffs. The Bobcats return five on each side of the ball. Edinburg Economedes also has a new head coach. Sean Van De Merghel will head across town to coach the Jags. Van De Merghel

is no stranger to 31-6A or the city of Edinburg, as he served as the Edinburg Vela offensive coordinator over the last few seasons. The coaching carousel continues in Los Fresnos. Former Brownsville Veterans head coach David Cantu returns to his alma mater. This will be Cantu’s second stint in Los Fresnos, this time as a head coach. Cantu will bring back the spread offense after the Falcons missed the playoffs in 2020.

As the curtain rises for TAPPS Football Division II two teams from the area gear up with a real fact that they played against the best last season and that they will be seeing a returning state champion in October. A playoff run for either Brownsville St. Joseph or John Paul II will come down to replacing key starters or adapting to a new coach. Last season had every team making the playoffs due to the effects of COVID-19. Both John Paul II and Brownsville St. Joseph ended their seasons in a second round playoff game. This season, both look to bring in a ton of new talent to the mix in hopes of making a deeper run. For the Bloodhounds of St. Joseph, this will mark a second time since being the head coach that Tino Villareal will be starting a season with a handful of players that took most of the snaps from a previous year. “We have been here before,” said Villareal during his Midnight Madness Practice, “but with a coaching staff that understands how to work through that kind of offseason and with the kids being able to participate in conditioning all along, we feel that we can have players ready to go when we take that first

snap on the road at Port Isabel.” The Bloodhounds have once again stacked their non-district games with opponents that bring a variety of offensive and defensive schemes each game. “That is by design,” Villareal said, “We know that down the line we are going to see play-makers and we try to let our kids experience as many types of game scenarios so

that they can be ready for anything they see once we play the teams up north in our district.” For John Paul II their season begins with a game at home against the London Pirates on Aug. 27 and returns most of their core starters. If they can get that offense in gear, they too may be able to ring up points in big bunches. Last season the Centurions averaged nearly 40 points

per game in their wins. The Centurions will be hoping to build on the returners as they take on the personality of a new coach. They will also navigate through a tough non-district schedule before they play St. Joseph in the final regular season game November 5. Both John Paul II and Brownsville St. Joseph knows full well that sitting in their district is last year’s Tapps

Division II State Champion Austin Regents. For the Centurions, they play Regents Oct. 29, while St Joseph will play Regents a week before that on Oct. 22. Regents returns half of their starters on the offense and defense which means that any goals of a deep run for anyone in TAPPS DII will certainly have to include keeping tabs on how fast Regent replaces those missing pieces.
