On Wednesday, May 18th Los Fresnos Highschool held their Page 3 2022 Baccalaureate for the Senior class. The event was opened by the Los Fresnos Navy JROTC Colorguard who did an excellent job presenting the American flag while Genesy Rivera led the B&G Club Closing Pledge of Allegiance Ceremony and Karlee Vasquez, Page 5 led in singing the National Anthem. Christian Alvarado, this year's Vice President of the Interact club, acted as the Emcee for the night, and Chad Bresson, pastor at The Table of Los Fresnos gave a speech to the LFHS Students Accepted graduating seniors that to NASA Internship attended. Los Fresnos Rodeo. There were several students from Los Fresnos High School who helped; some put in 13hr days. Cantu shared a few words to congratulate the Senior Graduates and their accomplishments. The Los Fresnos Class of 1985 alumnus, Jimmy Manrique explains that they, as a class reunion, had a contest to design a t-shirt for the reunion celebration. He says that through it they were able to raise 2,812 dollars. In closing, the Los Fresnos Rotary Club presented the winners of the scholarships. Each Senior who walked in was to write their name for a drawing, at the end Rotary drew out an index card to reveal the winner of these scholarships. All together, Rotary shares that through their fundraising events and generous sponsors they were “able to award $7,600 in scholarships and $1,500 indoor prizes to the LFHS Seniors that attended the Senior Celebration.” For each student, Rotary handed out seniors free gift cards to congratulate them on their accomplishments.

Los Fresnos NJROTC Awards On Friday, May 13th, the Los Fresnos NJROTC program hosted its annual Change of Command/ Award Ceremony. The event was well attended by school officials and over 200 family and friends supporting their cadets. Local veteran groups provided over 46 organizational awards to well deserving cadets, who were recognized for their leadership and citizenship qualities. Additionally, over 100 unit awards were presented to cadets for

their performance, within the unit, during the school year. Some of the top awards included: Distinguished Unit w/ Academic Honors (19th consecutive year) Cadet of the Year: Isabel Bautista Best Unarmed Team Commander in the State: Emily Godoy Catholic War Veteran’s $1000 Scholarship: Mark Maldonado A formal change of command was also held that evening with the following cadets being

promoted to their new leadership positions. suicidal thinking within the past year. According to the Journal of Emergency Services, there is a silent crisis happening worldwide. First responders are quietly suffering because of the stigma surrounding the utilization of mental health services. First responders are approximately ten times more likely to have suicidal ideations and/or attempt suicide compared to the CDC national average. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273TALK (8255), is a free

resource, available 24 hours a day for anyone who is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The crisis text line is a free 24/7 text line where trained crisis counselors support individuals in crisis. Text “Jason” to 741741 to speak with a compassionate, trained Crisis Counselor. Confidential support 24/7, for free. The Jason Foundation is another available resource. The Jason Foundation offers the First Responders Training Module: Addressing Suicide with Youth in the Community and Within

the Profession. The goal of this training is to provide First Responders with the knowledge, skills, and resources to enable them to be better able to recognize the signs of concern and elevated risk factors for suicidal ideation in youth within their community, as well as in co-workers and fellow first responders. The training is free of charge and can be found online at www. jasonfoundation.com under the How To Get Involved tab.

June is PTSD Awareness Month National PTSD Awareness Month is observed in June and it ushers in an array of awareness campaigns run for the benefit of PTSD Survivors. PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which occurs in people after they have experienced a particularly traumatic event like war, violent physical/sexual/verbal assault, accidents and so forth. Symptoms include depression, anxiety, nightmares, paranoia, insomnia, disturbing thoughts and much more. Many people recover from

PTSD after a few days, weeks or months. Yet, for others, the recovery road might mean one year or more. This mental disorder is treatable, but due to the lack of knowledge around it as well as the stigma attached to seeking mental help, many choose to ignore the problem and suffer through it. Some studies suggest that suicide risk is higher among those who experienced trauma due to the symptoms of PTSD. A study from the National Comorbidity Survey, a national

representative sample, showed that PTSD alone was significantly associated with suicidal ideation or attempts. A later study by the Canadian Community Health Survey data also found that respondents with PTSD were at a higher risk for suicide attempts. Among people who have had a diagnosis of PTSD at some point in their lifetime, approximately 27% have also attempted suicide. Another large-scale survey found that 24% of military personnel diagnosed with PTSD had experienced

B&G Club Closing Ceremony

Here is a picture of Mr. Barron in 1985, with the legendary Muhammad Ali Emilio Flores Los Fresnos News Los Fresnos really is a community-oriented city, this week Los Fresnos News wants to shed a little light on some of the amazing things Los Fresnsos’ Boys & Girls Club does, and how they are impacting so many kids. We had the chance to once again hear from Mr. Eddie Barron, who is the Executive Director at the B&G Club and heavily

involved with City events like the Big Easter Fest that went on just last month and has been helping to coordinate this year’s 4th of July celebration, which will be an exciting event! At the Closing ceremony, Barron shares the importance of the community in a speech he gave to both parents and students at the ceremony. He shared the time he met his idol, Muhammad Ali. “My dream came true in 1985 when Ali visited

Brownsville,” Barron says, “I was called in by The director and was asked what [I would] do to receive him? I told them I would go and set up the ring at Sunrise Mall and have some of our boys get in the ring and do some light sparring and take pictures with Muhammad Ali.” And that’s exactly what Barron did. He says at this point in the closing ceremony the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. He continued by sharing with these families that it was then that Ali asked him to make a promise. A promise to never stop training boys

and to not charge them any fees. Barron says “So, I kept my promise on a first-class program to keep it charge free.” He then shared Ali’s famous poem, also known as the shortest poem “Me, We” which is interpreted as the importance of community and togetherness. We are nothing without our connection to one another. It’s for that reason that teamwork and serving the community are what he. He says that the volunteers and

coaches all feel as though they are making a difference. And only the good ones really stay involved too Barron says “because they love what they do.” The Los Fresnos Boys & Girls club closing ceremony was an impactful moment for these kids, one that reaches beyond the sports and activities and awards, but is evident that everything that they do as a club is impacting our community in a positive way. That is what our City and Nation need more of, Bar-

ron says “the hardest word to say is Love.” In closing the Los Fresnos Boys and Girls club thanks all the parents that attended, and not only attended but were present and "in the moment", Barron says you could feel that. “That’s the biggest payment we can ever get as a club,” He says the feedback from parents was great.

Larranaga, who currently holds an ERA of 2.51, has been on fire in his final season as a Diamondback. After sweeping the Brownsville Porter Cowboys in the Bi-District Round, the Diamondbacks faced off against the Moody Trojans and took it to 3 games to capture the series in the Area Round. Heading into the Regional Quarterfinals, Pioneer was slated against the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles. After a tough series, the Diamondbacks prevailed 2-1. Now Sharyland Pioneer is set to face off against Buda Johnson out of District 26-5A. On the 6A Side of things, the La Joya Coyotes have been electric in 2022.

Finishing off as the number three seed in 31-5A, La Joya is led by Texas Tech signee J.C. Guttierez. After a Sweep over Weslaco, La Joya faced off against San Antonio Stevens in a one game winner take all in which La Joya came out victorious 5-2. In the regional quarterfinal, The Coyotes went up against 31-6A rival Edinburg Vela in a thriller of a series, capturing Games one and three in dominant fashion to win the series 2-1. La Joya will now face off against Austin Lake Travis in the regional final, With both teams going strong,The Valley supports its two teams who look to bring home the first State Championship for Baseball to the Rio Grande Valley.

As The Baseball and Softball Seasons have come to an end for the majority of teams from the Rio Grande Valley. However, for three teams, The Roads to Round Rock and Austin still continue. For Baseball in the Valley 31-5A’s Sharyland Pioneer and 31-6A’s La Joya remain alive as they prepare for the Regional Semifinal. LFHS Students Accepted to NASA Internship Highschool Students at Los Fresnos CISD were Accepted to a NASA Internship at UT-Austin

Emilio Flores Los Fresnos News After three months, ten Los Fresnos Highschoolers were surprised to find they were chosen as part of the top ten percent of students accepted into this year’s NASA & STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) internship program. This internship collaborates with The University of Texas Center for Space Research; giving students new opportunities! “Interns will learn how to interpret NASA satellite data while working with scientists and engineers in their chosen area of work.” Says Texas Space Grant Consortium’s website,

whose goal is to help more Texans participate in some of NASA’s missions to improve life on earth, extend life beyond our planet, and explore the universe. The Internship is supported by TSGC and UT/CSR where interns will complete distance learning modules prior to July 1, they will work remotely with project mentors from July 1st to the 15th. The on-site internship will be from July 16th through the 30th. Housing, meals, and local transportation will be provided for Interns as well. According to the letter that was sent to each of the interns, they chose from a

whopping 800 applicants, and out of that only 80 interns were chosen. Fernanda Martinez, who “Gave me ‘the little glowing ember’ that there was an opportunity for students at LFCISD about a NASA internship.” He says, “You see…(If) he hadn’t told me about the opportunity, the call to his daughter may have never happened.” Now here are some of the responses from the students that got accepted: Highschool Sophomore, Isaac Kuntz, says “When the results came in, I was truly astonished to be chosen from the top 10% of applicants for this internship. I am eager to work with my team of rising STEM students, and I’m especially excited to work with renowned NASA engineering and science professionals!” Kuntz shares his plans after High School saying, “I am planning to attend a university with a major in engineering and a minor in piano. I am still exploring different engineering disciplines; I will determine and pursue my favorite discipline in college after plenty of exploration.” In closing he thanks his Los Fresnos United Engineering Teacher Mr. Gomez for “bringing this opportunity to my attention” and also says thanks to the South Texas

Astronomical Society for helping him through the application process. He says “I am truly grateful and appreciative for this incredible opportunity! Thank you, everyone, including NASA, very much, and go Generation Artemis!” Highschool Sophomore, Daniel Trujillo says “I feel so happy that i was accepted as one of the top 10% for this internship and really hope to learn and have fun working with classmates and NASA engineers.” He says “I am really looking forward to working with NASA engineers.”

When asked what Trujillo hopes to learn from this internship, he says, “Well since this is related with space science and physics engineering, I hope to learn how the engineer's design and built the spacecrafts to help endure the tough conditions of space.” Trujillo says he plans to get an engineering degree to become a diesel engineer. He says “Since this is related to engineering, especially with diesel engines, this internship will help me reach my goal of becoming a diesel engineer”

The scholarship program recognizes 30 exceptional high school seniors attending schools within the navigation district with a $1,000 scholarship award.
