Motorcycle-riding season starts early in Texas. May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and during this period, the Texas Department of Transportation’s statewide “Share The Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles� safety and public awareness campaign urges Texas drivers to look twice for motorcycles every time they get in a vehicle.
Looking twice can help prevent crashes, including those that cause serious injuries or death.
Texas has over 400,000 registered motorcycles (Center for Transportation Safety, 2016).
Motorcyclists are vulnerable to serious injury or death in a crash. • In 2016, motorcyclist fatalities occurred nearly 28 times more frequently than passenger car occupant IDWDOLWLHV LQ PRWRU YHKLFOH WUDI¿F FUDVKHV QDWLRQDOO\ (NHTSA February 2018). • On average, a motorcyclist is killed on Texas roads every day. In 2018, 417 riders lost their lives and 1,920 were seriously injured in motorcycle crashes (TxDOT 2019).
Driver Safety Tips: • Look twice for motorcycles, especially at intersections. • Always assume motorcycles are closer than they appear to be, and avoid turning in front of an oncoming motorcycle. • Give motorcyclists a full lane. • Use turn signals and check blind spots before changing lanes. • Obey posted speed limits. • Avoid following a motorcycle too closely.
